Who Lets You Smoke

Fri Aug 01, 2003 12:56 pm

I'm not a smoker, but I'm curious which airlines let you light up. I'm only (!) 36, but I sure remember when planes had smoking sections in the back.

The other day in a series of posts, someone mentioned that Vietnam Airlines allows passengers to smoke. Air France also had a smoking lounge/area on the plane that was ventillated, but has since discontinued it.

On;y 36. I think I hate you now, Flybynight. Unless that is, your name is based upon a famouse Canadian band of the 1970s. Is it?

Anyway. When I was but a wee sprite of 14-20, all airlines allowed smoking. Period. You got on the airplane and as soon as the no smoking light went out, you were surrounded by a nice blue smoke, not just from the rear either. And, no one questioned the 16 year old in seat 16F with a cigarette either.

Thank goodness, in a way, times have changed.

I don't know if they still do, but I know as recently as 1995 El Al had a smoking section on their 747s.

Aeroflot only introduced the complete smoking ban in 2002 and most eastern european airlines allowed it up to the late 90s.

It's hard to believe that only ten years ago one could smoke on a domestic flight over two hours in length.

Maybe ten years from now it will be difficult to believe that you could smoke indoors at a restaurant ten years prior. I love to visit California, and non-smoking bars is the number one reason.

Correct me if I am wrong, but Cubana (until not too long ago) allowed smoking on Domestic and Carribbean/South American flights.

As far as I know smoking is still allowed on Belgian charters (Thomas Cook and Sobelair) when the flight is londer than 4 hours.

You may add to your list:

Cyprus Airways, Syrian, LAM (Mocambique), Angola Airlines and JAT.

Until very recently (I don't know status today)

Alitalia, EgyptAir, Air Algerie, Balkan (now they are Balkan Holidays), Tarom, Surinam Airways.

I saw Alitalia and had to look it up. They do not allow smoking, in fact. I'm glad to hear it as they have a non-stop from ORD to MXP that I wouldn't mind being on some day.

I'm just going to go off topic because I feel it important.

Luisca, you are not a light smoker. You have, as I do, an addiction to a drug that will kill you. I do not mean that it "may" cause you harm or "may" cause shortness of breath or, are you ready for this one, "may" cause impotence. Among all the other "mays", they are not maybes, there are absolute certainties in many combinations.

Please, please, please PLEASE! quit while you've a chance. I do not and I wish I had listened all those years ago.

In closing. All you smokers, please quit before your doctor tells you that with luck you will live another 5 years. Take the pain for a week, and it will hurt, but it hurts rather less than being told you'll be dead soon.
