What Happened To All The DC-10s

Wed Aug 06, 2003 9:25 am

Where are all the DC-10s going? Such a beautiful plane! Is Northwest the only US carrier still using them? Who else still uses them?

To the scrapyard, they're getting to be old gas guzzlers these days. Most were made in the 70s and early 80s. Being replaced by 777s and A330s mostly. Yes I agree, they are beautiful. Yes, NW is the last major US carrier using them. CO had them too until 2001. Only second-tier operators still use them now. MD11s are rare passenger planes now, too. Such a shame.

The only other U.S. carriers flying DC10s are Omni Air Express and
World Airways and of course FEDEX and Gemini in a cargo role.
If you want to see a large amount of 10's awaiting their fate, just
drive down I-10 outside of Phoenix to Goodyear. Truly a sad sight
to see so many former beauties awaiting their date at the Coca-Cola
factory.
Cargo doesn't whine, moan, or complain

United had -30's til February 2001. Fed Ex operates many DC-10's and MD-10's . Not too many second-tier operators in the US,mainly Omni.
Here's one I took while waiting out the ground stop into ORD July 8th . Sad thing is these people probably got to HNL before we got to ORD (4hrs late, but that's another story)

Japan Airlines is another major carrier still using the -10. Apparently, they'll stick around long enough to be worth the while for JAL to slap on their new (and hideous) livery onto the old girls.

I've herad JAL will be disposing of their MD-11 fleet soon, but i think they'll keep the DC-10 for the time being. Pity they're getting rid of the MD-11, such a nice looking plane.

UAL_Bagsmasher:

That pic was taken at LAS, was it not? I mean aside from having been there dozens of times, and knowing the scenery, there aren't too many mountains in the vicinity of ORD as I recall.  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

NWA still has a bunch of them and from what I hear quite a few will remain in service.

-40s to be retired and replaced on trans-con routes by -30s with the -30s being replaced on oceanic routes with A330s as and when those come online.

I am all for nostalgia, but I don't understand the massive amount of love for the 727, DC-10 and MD-11. In my opinion, what you see is equal to what you get: old, dirty, outdated, inefficient, ugly planes that lack any real design. I understand that these planes represent a different age in aviation, but they are just old-looking and lacking in performance. The DC-10 and 727 are planes that should have been scrapped in the late 70s, and if deregulation had occurred earlier, they would have. Long live the era of the 777, 757 and 737NG.

If it wasn't for aircraft like the DC-10, MD-11, and 727, there wouldn't be a 777, 757, 737NG. Hell the 757 design started in the 70s, and 737s have been around LONGER than the DC-10 and MD-11, Mr. Ssides.

I loved the DC-10. I wish AA had kept them longer. I was in one of the last classes of AA F/A's to be trained on it. My favorite thing about it was taking the elevators down to the lower lobe galley. It was so cool down there!

I really think it was an awesome looking airplane. I like how the nose and cockpit windows made it look like a shark. It looked mean!!!

The remaining -40s were retired a year ago... the -30s are slated for retirement in 2007, but will likely be gone within 2+ years.

I think the DC-10s had such a bad reputation. My mom doesn't know jack about flying, but when I showed her a pic of a CO DC-10 a few years back, she asked me if that was the one that always crashes. I didn't even know that before she told me. Yikes. (This was like in 1997 or 1998)

Mr Ssides i think you are forgetting your history. The DC-10 came out in 1970, and production continued through the 80's. Are you suggesting the DC-10 should have been scrapped after only not even 10 years in service? That is talking rubbish. That's like saying well the 737 entered service in 1968 so it should have been gone by the end of the 70's. The DC-10/L1011 were the main long-haul workhorses of the 70's, without them the only other choice was the 747. And the MD-11 is old?? Gimme a break. There are 747-400's out there that are in some cases MUCH older than the MD-11's out there. I guess it's time we scrapped the 747-400 since it is a very "old" plane which entered service in 1988. Might as well scrap the 767-200/300 too since they are both "old" planes which entered service in the 1980's, and give it a few more years and we can scrap the 777 too since that entered service in 1995.  Insane

Matt D-
I took that picture, not Bagsmasher... I took it on the UA 757 in LAS while we were sitting down at 25R waiting with only the APU running for ORD's ground stop to lift. Not fun sitting in a plane in LAS heat for 4 hours while the FAA makes up their mind what we're gonna do. Anyways,I was listening to ch 9 and took some pics as others passed us by to pass the time. Like I said these people on the DC-10 probably made it to HNL before we made it to ORD.
Also , speaking of DC-10's - United's old N1855U is being parted out in LAS  Sad

Does Swiss Air Lines use MD-11s and DC-10s now? I flew on their MD-11 bout 6 years ago(of course they were Swissair back then). I know JAT still uses DC-10.

Mr. Ssides- In my opinion old dirty smoky loud planes are better. Maybe not for economical or comfort purposes or whatever. But they certainly represent what a real jet should be like. A B-737 is a pussy compared to a Tu-134 or a 727 or a Trident or any of those nice old smoky loud jets. Nowadays everytime I see a Tu-134 coming(more like hear it first) I get excited. 727s are awesome and the 732s too. Never got the chance to hear and see stuff like DC-8-10s, tridents, BAC-111, Tu-104, 707, VC-10, CV990....but i wish those planes were still around because when I'm at the airport a plane like 727 or Tu-134 taking off or landing is equal to 10 B-737s or A-320s...

The DC-10's are being phased out for these reasons:

1. They are less fuel-efficient than today's airliners.

2. Most DC-10's have reached the end of their airframe lives.

3. The DC-10 requires a flight engineer, and modern airliners don't need them anymore.

This is why if NW likes the A330-200/300 series I expect NW to place a follow-on order for more A330 planes before 2006 and that will finally consign their DC-10-30 fleet to the scrapyard by 2010 at latest.

FedEx has converted (or will be converting) many of their DC-10s into the MD-10 standard (a DC-10 with an MD-11 flight deck).

Fortunately, here at OAK, thanks to the presence of FedEx, I'm treated to the commonplace sound of those CF6-50s in the skies nearly all day and night. Long live the Big 10.
