Did you hear, the city of Chicago approved a 6.6 billion dollar expansion plan for ORD. Projects include renovation of some of the terminals, adding an 8th runway, and many other projects. Now the FAA needs to approve the plan before construction can begin. WHAT, NOO!! I knew about the expansion and all but I didnt realize they would be eliminating 14L and 14R!!!!! I live under the approach path for these runways out in the northwest suburbs. 14R is probably one of the most, if not THE most used runway at O'Hare. If they arent landing on 14R they are taking off using 32L T10 intersection and full length. So is this true was I reading the pictures correctly that those two runways will be elminated?

Yes, TrnsWrld, 32L/14R will no longer exist under the new configuration.
And as I understand it, Governor Rod Blagojevich approved state legislation yesterday at a ceremony at ORD. The FAA still has to approve of the project, but yesterday it took a big step toward being a done deal.
I also have mixed feelings on this. I think the region needs more and better air service, but I'm not keen on the idea of moving two cemeteries, 500 houses, and 50 businesses. I spot from the St Johannes cemetery and will miss it when it's gone.
Personally I would prefer to see the Rockford and Milwaukee airports better utilized, and expansion of Gary would be far simpler than expansion of ORD.
But Daley is indeed unchecked and has seemingly limitless power, and I believe the ORD modernization plan will actually occur. And all in all, the region will be better for it.

At least Rockford will finally be returning to having scheduled service again at the end of this month with TransMeridian's flights to MCO and LAS.

Anyone in their right mind knows that Gary would be the best option for a 3rd airport for the Chicago area. The area is close to the city, has a small aorport in place, and ample room to grow. Also the area in and around Gary has severe problems and the economic development could only improve the area. I think Gary is 3rd place on that list of worst cities to live in, with only Flint and East St. Louis beating it out. If nothing else they could begin by utilizing it mainly for cargo and gradually phasing in passenger service as the demand grows. I think remodelling O'Hare is a good idea, but I am not too sure about moving the cemetaries and such. Also the entire Peotone idea is ridicules, and lets just hope they dont build out there, but like I said Gary is the ideal place, but because its in Indiana, the politician cant work out a deal.

It can now be said without argument that Chicago is the state capitol of Illinois. Rod Beluga-vich or whatever you call him is Demolition Dick's puppet. Rod has plenty of connections to the Mayor. No surprise that MeigsKrieg went unchecked and many people will loose their homes for ORD. I agree ORD needs expansion, but Daley's tactics are intolerable! We need regime change in Chicago!

While I hate Daley and the things he's done... I'm fine with the fact that his unabridged power is being used in favor of ORD.
If you look over the Modernization website (which I have, exhaustively) I think you'll find its an amazing refit. It'll make Chicago capable of triple simultaneous ILS arrivals even in inclement weather, drastically reduce the noise footprint of the airport, and really help improve longhaul operations.
Living by DCA with family in COS, I find myself trapped at O'Hare more than any human being ever should be.
ORD isn't so much in need of an expansion as a redesign - and unfortunately, they're gonna need to take over some extra space. Don't know how I feel about the bodies, however.

I dissagree with Jaws707. I think the Peotone Airport is a good idea. It will draw a lot of passengers away from ORD and MDW (especially from the south suburbs) It would be a lot more convienent and faster to drive out to Peotone instead of all the way up to ORD. My two cents.

With or without Peotone, ORD needs its retrofit. Gigneil is right on that count. And as for the bodies, better to move them than pave over them. Afterall, it's the soul you should worry about. A proper reburial is achievable.

The Peotone airport site is currently surrounded by acres of beautiful and peaceful rolling farmland, and it should stay that way. The site is 50 miles from downtown Chicago, while Gary is more like 25.
Gary already has the airport in place, and adding a runway and extending the current one would be relatively simple exercise. The main things in the way are abandoned warehouses and empty factories. Some rail lines will need to be detoured, but that's the case with O'Hare as well.
Gary could be a great cargo destination, and the populations of the south city, south suburbs, and northwest Indiana are rather substantial. These people could be on the Tri-State a whole bunch less if GYY had scheduled passenger service.
To fight against Peotone when it was initially proposed, the City of Chicago teamed up with the Gary airport. It was officially renamed Gary/Chicago and PFCs from MDW and ORD were shared with the facility, as I recall. The airport has information at http://www.garychicagoairport.com.
There are charter casino runs to Elko NV out of GYY, and it is used for the Chicago Air and Water Show, which is next weekend. Fixing up this airport and making it the Third Airport seems like a slam-dunk good idea to this aviation observer.

Is there still commercial service out of Gary? I knew that PanAm v3.0 was going to Orlando-Sanford for awhile, but thought that they discontinued that service. This makes sense to me, after hearing some of the experiences of friends of mine who had the misfortune of being booked on these flights.
Other than that, isn't it just mainly charters and private aircraft?
Besides, while Gary is located closer to the Loop, I think that Peotone is a better site, not for city pax, but think of the outlying areas. Growing up 80 miles from the city, I took plenty of trips up to ORD and MDW to go on vacation; now think of how many other folks from North Central IL (all the towns along I80 and over by I39) do this.
