The next-to-last pic -- is that first or business class? Or does NWA use a two-class service on its A330s?

It's the new World Business Class seat. Two class set up on the wide-bodies.

Looks nice. I like the Y Class with PTV's (finally), but World Business looks kind of cramped in these pictures. At least NWA updated to flat-bed J seating.

It looks nice at first, however, do you notice those center dividers in the coach seats? Those dividers are among the most inhuman elements ever included in a commercial aircraft, as they are positioned apparently with the intent of deliberately preventing coach-class passengers to stretch across empty rows of seats. This is a common feature to every Airbus A330/A340 I have seen, and in my opinion, one of the most sadistic design elements in the history of aviation, one which I think should be banned.

However, if there is some gravely important technical reason for the inclusion of the divider, then I would understand, somewhat (although in any event there must be an alternate solution as many other widebodied aircraft do not have that feature).

I don't really understand what you mean by the center dividers. Many airlines feature two armrests between the center seats on the widebody Airbuses. In fact, the only time I've seen center dividers is on some very early L1011s.
From this perspective, it could just be an armrest.

A few comments;

Looks like most airline design that is done on the cheap.

First of all, the colors (all white and grey) give the cabin a sterile appearance. Only color and pattern seems to be in the seat fabric, some color in the carpet too, but no pattern.

There could have been some color and pattern on the bulkheads, side panels, and on the privacy hoods of the WBC seat (inside and out). Imagine how comforting it would be to sleep in an egg. That is what one faces when reclining in the WBC seat.

For all the trouble, the WBC seat still doesn't recline to 180%. Consequently, it is still an inferior product to BA's business class seat. BA has set the standard. Northwest hardly matched it. Once the other US airlines, namely AA and United, get around to matching BA's standard, Northwest's product will again be second rate.

Ladevale:

NWA did extensive research on the bed and found that a perfectly flat bed on an aircraft was not the most preferred.

As for the appearance of the interior walls, you can hardly judge the appearance based on photos, especially those photos. Typically, NW has light grey stipes on the walls of it aircraft.

But then again, now that NWA offers IFE and a better WBC product, all the regular NWA bashers have to complain about something!

It looks like a great product to me, and I prefer the 'sterile' look.

It looks great (I love the use of a more teal-ish blue), but one quibble:

Why such a small and pathetic looking movable headreast?

US really should remove those seats, and the dividers, and see if they can get in a few more rows of Envoy.

I'm a little disappointed by the new biz class seats, however Coach looks very nice.

Biz class seats looks rather narrow, and as someone else has said, the pitch looks a little cramped as well.

I'm also not too keen (at first glance) at the "dome" which could be quite intrusive for the passengers behind - esp for maneuvering out of the window seat.

Braniff727:

I think you're falling for the marketing hype a little here! "a perfectly flat bed on an aircraft was not the most preferred"? If this was the case then my bed at home would also be on a slant!

I suspect this is marketing spin to justify the pitch/number of seats in the plane.

The facts also suggest otherwise. Virgin Atlantic for example are ditching their current biz class seat (called upper class and introduced only recently in year 2000) because customers preferred the fully flat offering from British Airways.

The new Virgin suite is very classy to say the least ( see it at http://www.upperclasssuite.com ), and it seems that NWA's offering is already outdated - a big shame.

I am a big Boeing fan a until recently I did not like the A330, but I have to say that is a beautiful cabin even if it is a A330 instead of a 777.

VS have also apparently done the research, and indications are that pax do prefer a slight angle to fully-flat. This might have something to do with the fact that aircraft typically fly at a slight pitch-up angle to the horizontal during the cruise phase.

Thank God!

They got rid of the wavy blue/black/grey seats in Coach!

Anything is an improvement over that!

WBC seats look similar to Continental's BusinessFirst except for the egg-shell privacy shield.

I like the look of Continental's a little better. WBC looks a little like that egg thing that Mork from Mork-in-Mindy flew around in.

FYI - All seats for Continental (including CO's BusinessFirst) are/were manufactured by Japan's Koito Industries (supplier of Japan Airlines and ANA as well as Singapore's first class product)

Seats for NW A330-300, I believe, are B/E Aerospace (a US company).

Is it me, or do those new Business Class seats look pretty uncomfortable?

I see about 2" of padding in that thing:

Sorry, but I'll take AA's business through ZRH and connect on Swiss next time I'm going to AMS, thank you.

This reminds me of the old TV commercial "Where's the beef?" Any airplane can look good and be comfortable. How about service? You could have the most beautiful, decorator cabin in the world, but if your inflight staff and product suck, what does it matter? There is a general thread throughout these forums regarding U.S. airline staff attitudes. I'd say "American" but that is a particular airline - what we have in this country is a failure to respect the consumer, customer, passenger, guest; however you want to phrase it. I guess it's just an attitude pervasive throughout the hospitality industry. Sad when you think of our historical "can do" attitude. Now, it's "can do only what I have to." Maybe I'm out of date, but courtesy and goodwill have always gone a long, long way.

Both the current and upcoming WBC seats are wider with greater pitch than AA’s; AA’s Business Class is absolutely nothing to brag about.

But I’ll have to agree with BAGSMASHER that it’s not surprising the same persons consistently bashing NW are posting negative comments about the new product.

I think it’s wise to actually fly in Business Class before making comparisons; pictures can be very deceiving.

Once the other US airlines, namely AA and United, get around to matching BA's standard, Northwest's product will again be second rate.
What the heck are you talking about? The new seat reclines 179 degrees – AA’s doesn’t even come close to that!

You could have the most beautiful, decorator cabin in the world, but if your inflight staff and product suck, what does it matter?
NW’s in-flight product will be greatly enhanced by the A333 (and eventually reconfiguration of the B744). NW’s cabin staff and other aspects of their product are up to par with their USA-based competition.

I think I'd still prefer the 6 first class/business seat at the front of US Airways A330s.
According to various USAirways employees on usaviaiton, the seats are being removed & replaced with Envoy…

Milemaster;

Keep in mind that in that photo you cannot see the entire seat back. The privacy shell partially blocks the view of the seat. I highly doubt that the WBC are uncomfortable.

The only feelings of discomfort this aircraft is giving is to it's domestic competitors and those that constantly complain about the lack of IFE and other inflight ammenities. Now that NW has installed it, perhaps you can move on to another airline to pick on...

I'm assuming you're not referring to myself since I have not one time in my 2.5 years on airliners.net ever posted anything NW related either positive or negative until this thread. That I am sure of.

I also wasn't suggesting AA's business was anything to brag about.. however, a seat isn't going to persuade me to fly any airline. I'm driven by fares like most the flying public. It just so happens AA miles are worth more to me & some new seat on a competing airline just isn't going to cut it unless they introduce new fares as well.

NW cabin staff and product up to par with U.S. based competition? That's really saying alot! Sad to think about.....

Should we compare USA-based carriers to their European counterparts whom serve liquor early in the morning? It isn’t fair to compare different cultures.

And NW’s in-flight product is up to par with its competitors… US Airways no longer serves complimentary meals in Economy, NW offers them on flights to the West Coast. NW offers a full continental breakfast in Economy on flights to the West Coast and a granola bar (or equivalent) on all others – Continental serves a doughnut, bagel or equivalent. NW serves hot meals in First, DL serves only cold. Many short flights (e.g. DTW, LGA, BOS) and flights to vacation destinations (e.g. CO / KMCO), USA - Florida">MCO) in First receive meals whereas the competition doesn’t/wouldn’t offer them on similar flights… The list goes on…

The only negative is IFE … however, consider the competion: only about 160 of CO’s narrowbodies have IFE systems, and at least 50-60 of them (probably more) are deployed on long, international routes (e.g. EWR/IAH to Mexico/Caribbean/Central America/Micronesia) -- not to mention that at least 60% of their domestic flights are operated by RJ … it’s possible to fly on an aircraft w/o IFE on AA, DL, etc. The list goes on.

Nice!!! Now I hope they upgrade the seating on their 747's... I just flew them on a couple of long-hauls in Y-class. Not as bad as people make them out to be...in fact, some aspects of their product impressed me. Their Priority Pet program is quite good and staff for the most part were very professional. I have noticed an improvement with their product...if they can upgrade just a little bit more, then they could well be my airline of choice. Congratulations, NWA for striving to improve your product in this tough environment.

I've flown NW a number of times and found them to be decent; my Dad flew NW years ago and raved about it. As Hugo said, if they can kick their service up a notch, they'd run close to foreign carriers. If they, in fact, DO kick the service up, it may be a stimulus to the rest of the U.S. flag carriers.

And, IndustrialPate, I was not writing specifically about NW - it's the whole U.S. airline industry that needs a good cleaning out and upgrading. This is a forum and, I for one, appreciate all the "inside" info from A/L employees. There is nothing I would like to see better than happy passengers flying lots of places on clean airplanes staffed by happy crews. AND still make a profit!
