That title is constantly changing between United Airlines, American Airlines, and Delta Airlines.

I think in number of passengers you may find that the biggest airline is Aeroflot.

The biggest airline by revenue and in the western world is United Airlines followed by British Airways.
717, 721/2, 732/3/4/5/7/8/9, 742/3/4, 752/3, 762/3, 772/E/W, 788/9, 300,310, 319,320/1, 332/3, 359, 388, DC9, DC10, F28, F100, 142,143, E75/90, CR2, D82/3/4, SF3, ATR

There are a lot of variables to consider, but the widely accepted winner is United Airlines, due to the fact that they fly the most revenue passenger miles (RPMs). If you look at fleet size and employee count, American is number one. United, though, has the most revenue and the most RPMs. Delta carries the most passengers. Below these three airlines, there really is nobody else who is even considerable for the title. If you look at a previous post from April, there is a table of several factors that you can consider. The information is from the 1999 Aerospace Source Book from Aviation Week & Space Technology.

As for Aeroflot, they were the largest at one time. During the cold war, Aeroflot was state supported with the primary objective of glorifying the Soviet Union at any cost. While they lost a fortune, they were the largest airline in terms of aircraft and employees. Since the fall of the USSR, however, Aeroflot has been broken into many smaller airlines and the remains, Aeroflot International, is relatively small... not even in AW&STs top 50 for 1998.

The answer is really quite simple, but comes in several parts.

1. No airline has more airplanes than American.
2. No airline flies more people than Delta.
3. No airline flies people further than United.
4. No airline flies more international passengers than British Airways.
5. No airline generates more revenue than United.

I have an answer. According to number of passengers, Delta Air Lines, od Atlanta is. According to the amount of airplanes-American Airlines of Dallas, and according to the most non-stop routes-that is also American
life wasn't worth the balance, or the crumpled paper it was written on

well, i guess we have to agree on certain messauring criteria otherwise you can have so many correct answers.
many compare passenger numbers, or departures/arrival or generated revenue. the best criteria in my opinion is to take the unit of production in commercial aviation whichis SKO (Seat kilometer offered .e.g. RPK )
The big three U.s. airlines (UA, DL ,AA) rank top:
1. UA
2. AA
3. DL.
4. BA
5. NW
6. CO
7. LH
8. KL
9. US
10. SQ

Wheras DL has the highest Pax-Numer. Previously Aeroflot (up to 1992 i quess) was the Airline number one
in terms of Pax transported (125 Mio./Year).
European airlines like to take the number of PAX on International routes (as to compete with fellow U.S airlines) here, BA ranks top in the world followed by LH and KL.

happy new year

I don't think so, at least not anymore. When the USSR broke up all the aircraft that were in the republics became the property of the republics more or less ( some ethnic Russian pilots in both the air force an Aeroflot did not like this and flew their aircraft to Russia proper, without permission). So, Aeroflot is now a shadow of itself as it has been broken up. Also, very many of the aircraft that 'flot had during the Soviet era simply have become unusable. Whenver I fly to Pulkovo I see the rows of dead aircraft on the outer edges of the airport.

Once Air Canada and Canadian merge, will they be in any of the top 10 lists (aircraft, PAX, revenue, etc.)?
