AC 333s YYC-FRA, YYC-LHR, YVR-LHR

As you probably know, AC plans on using its A330-300 on the YYC-LHR, YYC-FRA and YVR-LHR routes as of the end of October. Although the A330-300 does have the range to fly those routes, is anyone surprised at this decision? Why not the longer-range A340-300? Does anyone know more about this?

It looks like the other A330s will be used on YUL-CDG, YUL-LHR and YYZ-LHR (one flight).

What aircraft have been used in the past?

It is not surprising that the A330 was chosen instead of the A340. Why put an aircraft with similar capacity but more range, when the cheaper to run A330 can do the same job? Even the 767 can do this job, so to have the A330 is definitely a good accomplishment. This way as well, the A340 can be used on routes where the range is really needed.

By the way, rumours suggest the two A340-500's are coming in September, to be used on the flights to India. Anybody hear this as well?

In the past, it's been a combination of 744s, 343s and 763s (occasionally 762s). That's why I found it a little surprising. But you're right... why not? If they have the range and they want to use the 343s for longer-range flights, then use the 333s. I'm sure AC studied all the options before they bought the 333s and knew that they could be used for Western Canada - Europe operations.

345 coming soon? Yipee!

Right now it seems to be mainly the 343's serving those routes. Occasionally getting a 763.

Be a shame to see the 340's go however, I love watching them eat up rwy 16/34 in the summer months. But the 330's look pretty good as well.

If I recall correctly it is because the range of the A340's are needed on the new routes originating out of YYZ.

In the past it's been A340-300, 767-300, and 747-400 operation the routes.

To C172. At the moment, actually, it's not mainly the 343 on those routes...

At the moment...
YVR-LHR : 3 daily flights on 763
YYC-LHR : 2 daily flights (1 763, 1 343)
YYC-FRA : 1 daily flight (343)

As of October 28...
YVR-LHR : 1 daily flight (333)
YYC-LHR : 1 daily flights (333)
YYC-FRA : 1 daily flight (333)

I believe YVR-LHR (@ 4,104nm) will be the longest nonstop flight operated by A330-300X aircraft. Good for Air Canada. Although Northwest will take the crown when it begins SEA-AMS service, although they may end up using a -200 series.

How long in miles and flight time is the YVR-LHR route as Im surprised to see the A 333 being used for it...a 332 could do it but a 333?

Does it fly over the pole and therefore taking 9 hours?

Sorry bout that Matt, I was just refering to the YYC routes. Mainly 343's. And if I recall correctly every now and then we get 3 343's in from those destinations.

This is probably because Air Canada needs the 340s on the Toronto-Delhi route, and also the Vancouver-Hong Kong 2x daily and Hong Kong-Vancouver 1x daily, Hong Kong-Toronto 1x daily routes.

I always wondered why AC never flew its 333's on TA flights from Western Canada.....I guess it was just scheduling. Nice to see any increased role for the 333. Obviously the 333 is more fuel efficient than the 343 on the same route.

Captaingomes, those 345's will not be coming in 2003. Nothing more than rumours. I have heard two separate rumours on a.net - 1. the orders have been cancelled, and 2. the orders may be coming in mid 2004. I wish someone would give a REAL answer and stop all the speculation!!

What I read, was that the 333's were intended for Western Canada to Europe routes, but because of crew rest and pilot issues, the aircraft couldn't be used on flights of this length. This was why they were only really used on east coast to Europe routes. With the new labour contracts created because of Air Canada's bankruptcy, these restictions were probably abolished and now we have these long 333 flights. During the winter, Air Canada has usually gone with the 763, but I imagine Air Canada wanted more capacity on these routes this winter. The 343's are going to be heavily utilised with YYZ-DEL, YVR/YYZ-HKG, and YVR-HNL-SYD all being 343 routes and extra aircraft aren't available. This is also why YVR-NRT is not the usual 343, but 2 daily 763's.

I hope the AC A333 that just had a tailstrike at FRA will be ready to go. Sounded pretty serious. AC only has 6 or 7 330s, is that right?

Incredible! AC could not use the 333 on some of its intended routes due to the ridiculous union demands & intransigence!
