Delta 732s

Sun Aug 31, 2003 12:56 pm

I have noticed a trend of Delta adding quite a few 732s to their schedule recently to replace some flights currently being operated with MD88s. Obviously, a good number are coming from Delta Express and it has been discussed here before that some are being brought back from hibernation. I was surprised to see how many were coming back, especially in and out of ATL (they had generally been used on certain routes to/from CVG in the past). Is Delta refurbishing them similar to what NW has done to their DC9s? The ones that are getting new colors look great. I am just curious how they look on the inside, considering their age.

I flew on a few DLX 732s in their day. The cabins were similar to the MD-88s in age and comfort.

I see them at MSP two or three times a day. I do not know where they are from or going though.

Delta Express is being dismantled with the launch of Song. The 732's are going on mainline routes formerly served by MD-80's and 738's, so the MD-80's and 738's can replace the 757's that are now with Song.

BDL is the only city with DLX service still (outside of Florida), with flights to TPA, FLL, MCO, and PBI. All these flights will end by 24 September (TPA - 10 Sep, MCO and FLL - 17 Sep, PBI - 24 Sep) when Song comes into DL / KBDL), USA - Connecticut">BDL. DL did operate up to 50 737-200s at a time, so they might all (or a good portion) be coming back into the mainline.

Does Delta plan on getting more 757s to replace the mainline routes where they currently operate? It seems a lot of routes to/from ATL that operate with 757s really need them as those routes are usually quite full.

hello.

Yes, STL has been replaced with 732's now. They used to have MD-88's to ATL and now its been replaced with 732. We have 1 MD-88 flight to/from ATL.

As of today, IAD still had 2 dailies to MCO with DLX 732's

Delta's in-service 732 fleet currently numbers 32 aircraft according to airfleets.net. All are late model 732s, comprised of 737-232s that were delivered new to Delta in 1983-84 and 737-247s delivered new to Western 1984-87 that were passed on to DL in their 1987 merger.

Another reason for the noticeable reappearance of 732s, beside the one given by Cba in Reply:3, is the earlier than originally anticipated retirement of DL's sizeable 727-200 fleet. The 732s may also be replacements in part for 733s that have recently been shifted to DL's LGA-DCA/LGA-BOS shuttle services.

For the benefit of timetable "freaks" like me, here is where DL's 732 fleet currently flies -- moving ahead to November, their utilization remains essentially the same. DL's 732s are scheduled from ATL and CVG only. From ATL, I count DL having 58 weekday departures operated by 732 equipment, and 32 from CVG.

ATL- YYZ, DCA, RIC, CLT, GSO, CAE, GSP, BHM, HSV, MOB, BNA, SDF, LEX, CLE, CVG, IND, DTW, ORD, MKE, MSP, STL, LIT, BTR, TUL, SAT, AUS

CVG- EWR, PHL, DCA, JAX, TPA, PBI, BHM, SDF, LEX, CLE, IND, ORD, GRR, MKE, MSP, MCI, MSY, SAT, AUS

Actually, your BDL info is wrong

Song starts service on September 17 BDL-FLL. My aunt and uncle need to go from BDL-FLL in early september (like, next wednesday) due to a death in the family, and Delta has all flights w/ Express/song flight numbers w/ B757 aircraft...

Ben - my info came from flysong.com on the BDL info.

Hartford
Tampa (TPA) September 10
Fort Lauderdale (FLL) September 17
Orlando (MCO) September 17
West Palm Beach (PBI) September 24

Sorry about IAD...if flysong.com made it a little easier (by putting Washington DC under Where and When), I would have grabbed it.

Does Delta plan on getting more 757s to replace the mainline routes where they currently operate?

I don't think so....they've got 100+ total, and I think 36 are going to Song. They'll still have plenty to use on their current routes. The 757 flights that are lost due to Song are going to MD-88s and 737-800s, and, as Cba said above, 732s are taking those routes.

I flew a DL 732 earlier today ATL-CVG. I could tell it was old just by the interior looks, but it was not too bad at all. It obviously did not look like a new jet, but it did not look ancient and I had to tell my girlfriend that it was an older plane, so that shows she could not tell on her own its age. Really the biggest giveaway was how loud it was I think. The flight was great and was not any worse than any other aircraft of DL's that I have been on.

On a side note, the DTW flight from ATL that is currently a 732 will soon be changed to an MD88 according to DL's flight table.

Just to answer one previous question, all of DL's 732's (there are 52 of them) are scheduled to return to service by Spring...if not sooner.

Does this mean that DL will be bringing back some of their mainline capacity that has been cut (by about 20%) since 9/11/01? Or does it mean that 757s will be migrating to Song in large numbers? Or is there some other reason for the return of 732s to DL's active fleet in significant numbers?

The 732s are a nice compliment IMHO to borderline routes like mine (CVG-GRR) - nice for the upgrades. If the 732s were not available, in this economy, we'd probably be on a CRJ-70.

The 732s are louder and the interiors are blah, but I will take it. I really wish they equipped them with 3 rows of first class instead of two, but that would make the total capacity under the current 100 in the 2-row/8seat fc rest coach config.

Most of the 732s have the newest livery (which helps the experience), as all (I think) have been stripped of the DLX livery in mainline service - which is odd because there are many Shuttle liveries operating in mainline role.

At least you guys have mainline DL service! ROC lost it all the end of May .
I like the CRJ200/700 of Comair but it's not the same as a 727 /MD88 (which we had April-June) . I'de love to see 732's in ROC , but they're VERY rare.

United_Fan, I can't believe that Delta cut mainline service to ROC. I could see the flights to CVG being downgraded, but I would imagine the ATL flights are crowded. Do you know if a lot of flights are getting overbooked because of the reduced capacity? They did the same thing in BUF.

I don't know , but when I flew the on March 9th to get on a 727 for the last time , the flight was full both ways. They even substituted the MD88 flight in April with a 757 !
The flights to CVG use CRJ200's . I remember taking a 732 there on DL in 1995.
We only get Comair CR200/700's now .

Most of the reasoning behind bringing the 732's back is just to backfill capacity lost when the 752's leave mainline for Song. 752's are substantially larger than 732's (182 seats vs 100 seats), so virtually all 732's will be needed just to maintain capacity.

Depending on a variety of factors, DL may restore some mainline capacity in the Spring, however it's too early to make that prediction. For this Fall, mainline capacity will still be trimmed slightly vs last fall. Of course, the DL Connection carriers will continue to grow...though even their growth will slow down next year.

We have the 732 service here at SDF. I was hoping that we would get some 738 service. We had plenty of 727 service, even post 9/11, but we have mostly M88, 732 and some RJ services. I thought the 738 was a 727 replacement of sorts.

I'm hoping one day to see a 738 or 752 here like DL has/had in BHM. In looking at the schedule it looks like the 752 fleet that was flying ATL - BHM is now 738. So a downgrade there too even though it looks like there is more frequency.

I'm sure we're a 2nd tier city so getting the better aircraft here is not probably going to happen -- but I can dream.

Are all of DL's 737-200's "newer" relative to the -200's age?

THey also have to account for the 722's they took out of service. At some point Delta is going to have to start adding aircraft again. Between retiring the 722's and the Md-11's they have lost a sizable amount of capacity. Cactuswings still show a couple of 762's parked in the desert. Will they be making their return soon?

How much longer could they operate the 737-200's before they get to expensive to operate? Also, if everything stays on course, what are they going to replace those 732's with?

Thanks

#1 - In my earlier message I mispoke. Just today, I saw 732 with the newest DLX livery.

#2 - MCIB757 wonders what to replace a 732 with, that depends actually.

IMHO, if/when DL gets around to a point where they can accept delivery of new aircraft, the 738 would be the aircraft they would use for the smallest mainline operation - but, that is a 150-seat aircraft in mainline configuration. Comparing that to the 100 seat configuration that the 732 offers, leaving a 50 seat - 50% gap - and I would bet we would forsee a 70 seat Canadair filling such a void.

Further IMHO, I wish DL would have considered to put the 717 into their fleet strategy, I know they a want 3-family/ 4-model fleet, however. AirTran is doing it in ATL - nuff said on that. I just would really like to see a two-class aircraft in the DL fleet for 110-120 pax or fewer. It would be even better if DL Connection aircraft were two-class. That will never happen given the hard-line economics @ DL (But I can't blame them).

Here in Phoenix we have lost all our B757 service except the daily JFK service to the MD-88's to Atlanta & CVG. It used to be 757's and 767-200's. 3 1/2 to four hours to ATL & CVG without IFE is a little long. I hope we will see the 75's and 76's come back hopefully in the winter/spring!
