Airports With Jet Bridges For RJs

Mon Sep 01, 2003 2:22 pm

Given the recent trend of regional jet routes replacing certain mainline jet routes, I am curious as to which airports have installed jet bridges that are compatible with regional jets. This may not seem like a big deal, but to the average traveler, it may not seem as if they are traveling in a small plane if they do not have to walk outside to board it.

As far as my local airport, Tallahassee, FL, it appears that our airport has yet to install RJ-ready jet bridges. Passengers now walk through standard jet bridges lowered to their lowest levels, down a set of stairs to the tarmac and board the regional jets at ground level. I think this is the case with all airlines, except I am not sure about the AirTran Jet-Connect flights.

How about your local airport, is it "RJ-friendly?"

CRJs have stairs built into their doors. I have not read if Bombardier is going to offer the option to have Jetway capability.

ERJs have the option of being service by Jetways.

Avro RJs have to be boarded from the ground.

On a recent trip to SEA, LAX, and PDX, neither of the three airports were capable to use their Jetways on any type of RJ. You had to walk down a bunch of stairs to the tarmac and walk.

It all depends on which airline you are flying out of MKE.

The only airlines that I know that have no jet bridges are Comair (DL Connection) & Skyway (Midwest Connect). AEagle (& AConnection) ALWAYS uses jetbridges. UA Express (Air Wis.) occasionally uses jetbridges. Not sure about US Express & CO Express.

I don't understand it, but no airport in Germany (and I think even not in Europe) has them...

Avro RJs are often parked at jetbridges in Europe. But I haven't seen any smaller aircraft.

CRJ's are jetway capable...they just open up the door and lower the stairs and then maneuver the jetway over the stairs...

MSP new additions on the north side of the Lindbergh Terminal, which consists of some of Concourse B and all of A if I am not mistaken. Those are all for XJ. When on Comair, you have to do the stairs and enter from the tarmac.

Oops! My bad. According to an article I read a few years back, it said that the CRJ was incapable of being docked to a Jetway. Apparently, someone thought outside the box on that one.

Detroit Midfield is completely RJ/jetway capable. They even use jetways on the SAAB SF340s! Talk about advanced.

I have seen ARJ in MUC docked at jetways. However, I am still surprised how much "bussing around" there still is in Europe.

I recently used jetways in Tucson from a Delta Connection CRJ. And I believe Horizon uses them in Portland for their CRJ-700's, as well as loading from the ground. It's more an issue of which gates are available. Also recall seeing jetways used with older F-28's with a small metal ramped dropped down from the end of the jetway into the plane.

At PVD, CO has modified it's 2 gates to accomodate all types (widebody charters to ERJs), DL modified 1 of 3 of it's gates to accomodate all types (763 "Patriots" charters to CRJ's). UA (ACA), USAirways Express, NW (Pinnicle), and AA Eagle (before they left) all ground load from their respective gates.

Continental Express uses a jetway. I believe on EWR CLE to Burlington.
I think Eagle used a jetway when they were in BTV (A very shortlived daily to ORD on the ERJ)
NW has a jetway, I don't know if they use it.
What now?

I flew a Comair CRJ200 ATL-MLB earlier this month, MLB used the jetway. The f/a was taken by surprise, so it's obviously not a regular occurance. The jetways at MLB are set up for mainline aircraft, such as DL MD-88 service, but they lowered into place just fine.

ATL makes pax walk down service stairs, out onto the tarmac, and through a maze of tent-like structures that are supposed to keep you from getting wet (I was soaked by the time I was on board). A group of us got lost trying to navigate the tent passage ways, there were 3 aircraft boarding simultaneously and no one was telling us which one to get on.

At MHT, I have seen CO Express load right from the jetway. ACA, Comair, US Airways Express, and Air Canada Regional all ground load. I don't know about Northwest Airlink...I haven't seen them at MHT yet.

At BTV, I have only seen CO Express use jetways. AA Eagle didn't (see shameless plug below), nor did Delta Connection, nor did ACA.

At BOS, I don't think any regionals pull right up to the jetway. I have seen US Airways Express, American Eagle, Delta Connection (ACA, ASA, Comair), United Express (ACA), and Air Canada Regional ground load.

As a northwesterner, I'll be a spokesperson for QX here (Horizon) In PDX horizon has two jet bridges for RJs, they are expanding, from last I heard though. Also, in SEA I believe they have the same set up. It's important to remember that the CRJs reguire a small bridge that connects the jetway to the aircraft, the jetway can't, unfortunately, get close enough to the aircraft because of the top stair. AE tried to bargin with Bombardier to get a CR7 with plug doors like the ERJ, They completely refused! So thats all I know about that!

CLE has terminal D which is stricly used by CO ERJs. Also, PITs Terminal E was for RJs and props. But they now use the main terminal.

ROC has them for Continental Express and Eagle ,but not for ACA . I don't mind - I like being able to walk on the ramp and it makes getting the reg of the plane easier. I also know ACA in GSO and ORD do not have jetbridges.

At Port Columbus, regional jet boarding with jet bridges is available with American Eagle, Continental Express, and Northwest Airlink. America West Express used to board through 6 regional jet jetways that are currently sitting idle, however USAirways has expressed interest in them. Delta Connection seems content with their space in Concourse C, and has no interest in acquiring jetways for the RJ operations at CMH.

I know they have some designed and some modified for ERJ's and CRJ's the Avro's use regular jetways. All of the Avros that I have seen UA's and Nortwest (Mesaba's) old PSA 146's use/used regular Jetways, at DFW the Avro's park right next to the DC-9's and A319's at NW and at Den I saw the same thing.

ExpressJet and Jazz use jetways @ ATL. ERJs are jetway compatible, while CRJs require a gangplank to bridge the gap (ASA did use them for a time for flights out of E). I have seen AirTran JetConnect use them on occassion (usually in inclimate weather) as well. US Airways Express does not use them nor do ASA and Comair, and United Express doesn't either. Mesaba uses them for the Avros. When Midway was still around (pre 9/11/01 and the later restart and eventual US Airways Express service), their RJs used jetways as well.

CWA has jet bridges for their RJs. We get CRJs, Saab340s, DO328 Jets, and Beech 1900Ds for NW, UA, and YX. YX doesn't use a jetbridge for their 1900s but they do use them for their 328s.

AZO and GRR use jetways for some RJ's.

At AZO, NW uses the jetways on CRJ's and ARJ's, and AA uses them on their ERJ's.

At GRR the jetways are used on DL, UA, and NW CRJ's. AA, US, and CO use them on ERJ's and I believe YX uses them on their Do328's. The GRR ones I am not 100% on, so maybe someone at GRR could clear that up (WMUPilot, etc)

For the CRJ, they open the door as usual, and the handrail for the stairs can be dropped down out of the way, so the jetbridge can move close.

PIT has bridges for US Express and American Eagle. I'm not sure if CO uses them though.

I flew CO Express ERJ from PIT to IAH in July. There was no jetbrige. We had to board outside.

YOW's 8 new loading bridges in the new terminal, which opens in 6 weeks, will be RJ capable. In fact, I believe most will be anywhere from RJ to widebody capable.

I can't speak to other airlines, however, all of Northwest's 3 US Hubs (MSP, DTW, and MEM) have jetbridges for their regional aircraft.

In MSP, all of concourse A and B and C22-27 (although within 6 months the rumor is they will extend down to C17) are all devoted strictly to regional.

A-CRJs, Saabs (A14 also can get an ARJ)
B-Saabs (Skywest gets in a Dornier)
C-ARJs

In DTW Concourse B and C are regional. (B I think also has CO, not totally sure, been to DTW twice and never looked in B). C is used for CRJs and Saabs.

MEM, not totally sure the concourses but know that some of our agents went there to train when we received ours.

CRJs are capable of having a jetbridge, door opens up before we can move the jetbridge, the ramp agent folds down the hand rails, then the jetbridge is allowed to move. Vice a versa when closing, jetway has to be moved first, the ramp agents hook up the hand rails, then the door is able to be closed.

(For once im pretty sure I know what i'm talking about since thats all I do is a ramp/counter agent for Mesaba and since we also do the ground work for Pinnacle I can speak of them)

All MSY jetways on Concourses' C and D are equipped to handle RJ's of any type. Not sure about A and B, but currently no airlines' using those two terminals bring RJ's in here...all mainline or turboprops. Here's a brief rundown...

* ACA/United Express parks its CRJ's at gate C-6 (AC, UA use this one too)

* Continental Express ERJ's board from a jetway for the morning CLE flight and from the ramp for the afternoon flight (at that time, all 3 CO jetways are in use)

* All Delta Connection carriers here (Chautaquah, ASA, Comair, Skywest) use jetways...usually D2 and D4.

When American brings in the ERJ-145 for a STL flight in November, it will also use a jetway...probably C-10 or C-12.

Midway used to park its CRJ's at an American gate on Concourse C as well.

Sorry, I am a bit behind in reading, have been away for a while...

In TLH, I have seen the Jet Connect aircraft use the jetways...

In MIA, Jet Connect uses the jetways, but Comair, does not (my 10 experience on that flight). Not sure about the Chautauquah flights, I have a preference for the CRJ flights  Smile ...

In FLL, Comair doesn't use the jetway, from experience, been on that flight a handful of times, not sure about Chautauquah here either...

Just my two cents...
