I flew this exact plane earlier this summer...loved it, do not know why, but I loved it.
The flight was Coca (Orellana) to Quito

Maybe it's not that rare, but it's the strangest plane I've ever flown on...

Flew it ORD - BMI back in 1999 or 2000.

I flew on a SU IL-86 (CCCP-86000) from LGW to SVO and then back to LGW from Leningrad (which St Petersburg was called at the time). Was cool how you boarded using stairs from the belly of the aircraft.

For me, also, it was a Guayaquil-Quito flight, on an ex-Alitalia Caravelle, belonging to SAETA, though our ticket had been purchased from SAN.

Aircraft was threadbare but spotless, service was "part of the family" pleasant, and the Caravelle was remarkably smooth and quiet. Even then (it was 12/24/1977) I appreciated the opportunity to fly on a rare bird. I have a picture I took at Quito after the flight, somewhere, which I may try to find to see whether it is worth uploading. I know the image quality will not be that great (timed exposure at night w/o tripod- braced against the side of the terminal), but it certainly will qualify as rare!

I also believe I have a better pic of a Faucett BAC 1-11, taken at ... ummm, Ambato?... Peru. I'll have to check, that sounds not at all right.

I flew a DC-3 from Fairbanks to Whitehorse, to Sitka back in 1989. It was chartered by my family in a last ditch attempt to make it home in time for Christmas. Couldn't get back to Sitka from Anchorage because Mt. Redoubt erupted.

The least common aircaft I've ever flown is most certainly a Beechraft Duchess.

The rarest I've ever ridden on would be a Ford 5-AT.

Captain Bill Becker was among my father's friends. Some years ago, when Becker wasn't flying Eastern DC-9's, he was the Chief Pilot for Fifi, the C.A.F.'s B-29. (Early in the movie "The Right Stuff," there is a scene where you can see Becker--in gold framed Ray Bans--taxiing Fifi with Sam Shepard/Chuck Yeager sitting behind him.)

One day Fifi made a stop in my home town and Captain Becker offered a ride to my father, my brother, and me. Man! A chance to fly in the only living Superfortress!

My mother told dad that if he took us flying in a forty-year-old airplane, she'd divorce him. My father looked at the amount of oil Fifi burned up on each flight and decided maybe she had a point.

[Sigh.] Ah well.

Your father, DFWCapt, made a bad choice. Sorry.

I was presented rather the same ultimatum in 1984 with the Ford, which was quite a bit older. I took my 4 year old daughter with me anyway though. How many 22 year olds do you know that can say they've ridden a Ford Tri-motor?

I caught hell when we got home but who cares. We got home. The divorce was 1 1/2 years later and unrelated to the airplane ride.

And, I'd do it again even if I knew she'd walk out the door instantly. Some things are worth that much and women are dime a dozen.

It's not that rare, but for a North American, it's quite an event to fly in one of these.

You're telling ME! I was about fourteen at the time, and I was so excited about that ride I was ready to burst! Really disappointed...

(By the way, I don't think divorce was really an issue...but mom WAS pretty nervous about it. They're still happily married...)

Naw, DFWCapt, I did not mean to say that your mother would have divorced you father. She'd have raised quite a storm though I suspect.

As you are now an adult, look to the next B-29 made flyable. This time you may be able to take your dad.

Cheers.

A Southern Airlines DC-15? shorter than heck..from Atlanta-Valdosta (GA) and on to Okaloosa County Airport where we actually crossed railroad tracks while taxiing to the terminal...I know someone else has done this too! And did a double take at the railroad tracks!

I've been (worked) on lots of weird planes and loved every minute of it! I've had a really unusual career...For many years I worked as an independent-contractor Flight Attendant and FA Instructor. I worked for charter airlines and aircraft leasing companies, and this gave me a chance to be crewmember qualified and work on a lot of strange and/or unusual aircraft.

Convair 580 (I had many wonderful years on this legendary aircraft)
Nord 262 (A very strange bird indeed)
DC-9-10/15 (90-seaters, very short and very loud!)
B727-100 (When I worked on these in the early 90s they were "semi-rare"!)
B-737-100/200 (With the aft push-out staircase! Fantastic!)
Fokker 28 (I did an F28 airline; In the USA anyway, these are "rare")

Working on these planes was always so much fun! (Especially the Convair--passengers loved it and so did we!) Flying charters we would be at the FBOs or at the airport terminals and crews from different planes would come check out our aircraft and ask a million questions. It was great!

Ahh....the memories....

Cessna Caravan 1 Amphibian - from Townsville (QLD, AU) to Orpheus Island - we landed on the lagoon, and taxied to and grounded on the beach.

Safair L-100 Hercules - several times between Waterkloof and Northern SWA (in those days, now Namibia), with a spiral anti-SAM7 approach at GFY and OND. Similiar on a SAAF C160 Transall, but the flight from GFY to OND was low level, at about 100 ft. Good view of the thorn trees.

The "rarest" commercial plane on the market was certainly the Dassault Mercure, as only 10 aircrats were built (14 Concorde) and were all operated by Air Inter, the French domestic Airlline, merged in 1997 with AF.
IT (Air Inter) added in the 80's an eleventh aircraft to the flleet : F-BTMD (MD = Marcel Dassault) which was one of the protoptypes, transformed later for regular commercial use. The Mercure made her last flight in 1992, if I remember...Is that correct, EDINA ?
This 156 seats plane was incredibly fast, and beat a lot of records on the French domestic network, like PARIS-ORY---> LYON-LYS in 35mn !!! she was compared by her pilots to "fighter" plane.

Another "rare" aircraft, I enjoyed the most is M.E.A B707.
I flew my very first 707 on ORY-BEY with M.E.A in Jan. 1992.
I think M.E.A was this only airline in the world, at that time, to use such a big fleet of B707/720 on all his regular network until late in the 90's when they began to replaced them by A310.

The rarest airliner I have ever flown in was probably the Lockheed L-188 Electra.

As a flight attendant with the old Frontier, I got to work the Convair 580's which was fun.

The most recent rare occurence for me was December 1988. Morris Air, before they became "mainline" (and subsequently acquired by Southwest) chartered 707's for LAX-SLC flights. I was broke and this was the cheapest way for me to get home for Christmas. This old plane was something. We landed in SLC in a snowstorm, hit the runway hard, and oxygen masks fell out of the overhead compartments.

Oh how I long for the day when the skies were truly Friendly!

I flew in several Russian types, but the rarest one has to be An-2 from Suhumi to Kutaisi in the summer of 1990.

Rare Birds

Fri Sep 05, 2003 12:20 am

An obvious answer I know but;
BA Concordes;
G-BOAF, November 1993 IAD-LHR, September 2001 LHR-LHR, September 2002 JFK-LHR.
G-BOAC September 2002 LHR-JFK.
G-BOAD November 2002 LHR-JFK.
G-BOAE August 2003 LHR-LHR.

I would include an Air Alantique DC-3, LTN-LTN June 1984, but a lot of those were made, still quite a few flying now, including in the UK.

I once flew LAX-BFL-SFO and back the same segments on the same day on
a Pacific Express BAC 1-11. it was a pleasant surprise and a remarkable well fling aircraft. After seeing these aircraft so common in Europe, I though they would be noisy inside - but they were noticeably quiet. I also flew on a Cessna Citation after overhearing the pilot and his student (who I remember was a portly man with a handlebar mustache) talking about his check ride, while I was spotting aircraft from the Martin Aviation FBO. I was 15 years old and just asked point blank if I could go and he said " sure, cmon". We flew SNA-LGB-SNA....did all the maneuvers between LGB and Catalina Island over the water including stalls, etc. It was a blast. I remember the reg'n was N81BA (Chino Jet). Does anyone have a shot of this aircraft?
