Your Favorite Airline That Is No Longer...

Wed Sep 10, 2003 3:54 pm

What was your favorite airline and why?

I loved New York Air. The red DC-9's from BOS to LGA were great. I loved "The Flying Nosh" bags they gave out.

Great airline. Service- and customer-oriented, and some great people to work with.

Would have to agree with Ped - I was a Golden Wing member with Ansett from the age of 23 - loved that airline and it safely carried my around Australia many many times and once to Hong Kong. The staff, livery, cabins - everythign about them was fantastic.

I'm also very fond of Ansett but more recently I miss Impulse the most I think, It's been around for many years of course but only really became well known when they brought in the 717 and took on the big boys on the trunk routes, offering lower fares and a low level of cabin service. I found them an ideal choice for the hour trips to Melbourne and Brisbane from Sydney.
I know rechnically they still exist within the Qantaslink conglomerate of controlled, restrained and identityless carriers but who cares.

Wonder noone has mentioned Pan Am and TWA! They come up in every other post which have nothing to do with them, and people just come up with Pan Am and TWA and how nostalgic they are about them etc...

In any case, I miss Pan Am, it was a truly global airline, great route structure.

Mainly PanAm and Ansett. Pan Am was something that probably will never happen again. Ansett was also there at the end of an era of a particular type of service. I also loved UTA, TWA and British Caledonian. I would love to have been able to have flown long international routes on the flying boats - but hey, things change constantly. In less than 100 years we have come so far, and it is sad that some icons have been lost along the way - but new icons come along. I just hope we never lose the romance in a sea of LCCs.....although even some of them are bringing new things to enjoy and making air travel accessible to more people, more often.
Cheers

were excellent, I loved their inflight magazine which always had an article
on various aspects of airplanes/flying.

SunValley:

Are you referring to Braniff International? The "original" Braniff started service between Kansas City and Oklahoma City in 1934; it folded in 1936 (I may have those years off by a bit). What became Braniff International was started by the same family a few years later.

I miss:

Everybody doats on Pan Am. For me Pan Am was my worst flight-experience. I flew with them FRA-TXL several times. They had 727-100, totally old, drinks we had to pay. Meal was boullion. If they have been good, that must have been on routes without monopoly.

AirJam, maybe PA got bancrupt cause they had the most jumbos and hat that much routes?
PA had lots of accidents too. Flights within Germany from PA were horrible.

When i was in FLL i saw some A 300 from PA and feared they would rise again.

Wow! Air California, for sure (before they crashed at SNA and became Air Cal). This was a nice, small, friendly airline. Their early motif was, in psychedelic days of the 1960's, rustic and "Early California" with a Spanish flavor. A very different airline than the others of the time.

WesternDC1010 beat me to it - its Western. As a child shuttling between my mom in Alaska and my dad in Arizona I flew as a UM between Seattle and Phoenix or Las Vegas for years. They never failed to take me up to the cockpit, the captains let me sit in their seats, even got to do (read) the pre-flight check list and do the walk around with one of them. I still have the various stuff that they always gave me, including full minis! They truly were 'The Only Way to Fly'!

I THIRD the motion: Wardair Canada Ltd and their "fleet family" consisting of
"Romeo Vachon", "Punch Dickens", "Herbert Hollick Kenyon", "Stan MacMillan",
"Phill Garratt" and the rest.

And, of course, the grand Empress of the skies, Canadi>n Airlines International.

Sorry guys and gals but it has to be AN Ansett Australia. This is an airline that knew what customer service was all about. Never in all my years flying with this company did i have an awful experience. From the moment you checked in you just knew that everything was going to be fine whether travelling in economy or business class or ansett international when they had first class. This airline cared for its passengers. GREATLY MISSED!!!!!!

Funny how you only appreciate something when its gone?!
Out of these, probably British Airtours and Caledonian are the one's I miss the most. British Airtours as I remember that when I flew them ( I was only 5 ish at the time), I felt really posh as I thought it was just like flying British Airways! I guess you don't need much legroom when you are that young! I also remember walking up the airstairs seeing those beautiful RB211's - they seemed HUGE!!!!!
I also miss Caledonian. They were a great airline with some fantastic staff, despite the funny tartan hats. It is a shame that their reputation during their last years became tarnished as the maintenance heavy L1011's began to let them down on punctuality, although I believe that there was legal action taken over this. And we all loved jmc, right??? Big grin

Took long enuff for Tee-Dub to get mentioned. I did like that inverted color MD-80, and the St. Louis Rams 757 (not pictured), even if I'm a WASHINGTON REDSKINS fan.
Those who fail to learn history are doomed to repeat it in summer school.
