BA 747-400 Returning To PHX

Thu Sep 11, 2003 12:53 am

It looks like British Airways will be switching back to the 747-400 next summer for the busy summer season here in Phoenix! I was told that due to the converting of the 777 to the 4-class layout the large reduction of capacity was going to make the 777 too small for the Phoenix flight. Good to hear the loads are still running high. I am sure there are some other factors leading to the aircraft change but whatever the reason it will be nice to see the Queen of the Skies returning to PHX.

Schedule begins March 27th.

That doesn't make sense, because the 777s are being converted into either 4-class or 3-class without F. I believe Phoenix was supposed to get one without F. None the less, whatever the reason, great for Phoenix that the 744 is returning.

But what I find is funny is that the summer is our slow months here... I am surprized the 747-400 is not here from october until may! Oh well... I wont complain!

Great news that the 747-400 is returning to PHX but does this maybe also mean that we may go back to old operation of continuing on to SAN??? Like most i cannot believe that BA is dropping this important station and should maintain connections to SAN. Lets go back to the old trip of LON-PHX-SAN. Whether it operates from LGW or LHR BA should be increasing services to USA and not decreasing. Company presence is paramount!!!

I'm not sure BA management would agree with you there - right now, the airline is cost-cutting like there's no tomorrow, and that includes taking a serious look at the network; BA's US network has evidently not been spared from the surgical knife of the FSS project - out went CLT and now SAN too. I'm no BA employee, I don't know the reasons why SAN has been pulled - certainly the flight to SAN I was on last November was full both ways in Y - and I mean FULL, in caps....(what an excellent flight with great crew, BTW...)

I fear the days of "presence" being a priority are over....BA is anyway a well established brand in North America....

Costs are creeping down, loads are apparently excellent but the yields are just not there.....that goes for the US and European majors too....

Still, I hope SAN sees the 777 again...you have no idea of the thrill of finals into SAN on that 777....best approach I've experienced in America  Big thumbs up

You're right about that ... but summer is the big-time travel season to Europe. 'Tis why LH had the A343 here over the summer (and what a dog that aircraft was on the 105+ days)...

As for SAN, BA did some serious fare dumping in the last few months of operation. I can confirm that LGW-SAN was virtually empty in the cargo hold almost every flight.

ETA, don't you mean LHR? It was switched from LGW last October.

DoorsToManual,
Being full doesn't always mean it was a moneymaker. Look at RDU-LGW, good lord. My dad was on that flight awhile ago, (even though we live in STL, he got routed thru RDU, don't know whY) anyways it was for a St Andrews golf trip and he said he had the row to himself on the RDU-LGW leg Wow!. He said up front it was real full though. And as rumored on here, RDU-LGW is one of the most profitable routes in the AA system. He seemed to really like RDU, I didn't know it had the reputation of being a nice airport. Big thumbs up

How much more profitable would the RDU route be at LHR when Glaxo is so close to LHR?Can't be more than 20minutes.

Lambertman, that's true, hence my reference to "full in Y", and yields not improving, in previous posts.

I'm jealous of the PHX crowd! DFW is still sitting without any 747 service. I think because AA operates 3 daily flights to London, BA would have difficulty filling a 747. Same with other foreign airlines -- with so many AA flights out there (FRA, CDG, AA), Japan">NRT, etc.), the excess capacity makes it difficult for anyone to justify a 747. Too bad for us, but congrats to the PHX folks.

Two daily. For nine days between 11 December and 20 December American will operate a third flight. While I have no idea if Dallas could support a 747 on BA's DFW-LGW (from what I hear, loads are very weak on the flight), there are no British Airways 747-400s based out of Gatwick, so even if demand is there, BA can't put a 744 on it.

It's strange though, when it gets upgraded to a 744, the PHX flight will no longer be daily, just 6x weekly.

So while it's an upgrade in aircraft, it's a downgrade in frequency.

A bit strange if you ask me.

due to the converting of the 777 to the 4-class layout the large reduction of capacity was going to make the 777 too small for the Phoenix flight.

"That doesn't make sense, because the 777s are being converted into either 4-class or 3-class without F. I believe Phoenix was supposed to get one without F. None the less, whatever the reason, great for Phoenix that the 744 is returning "

I have never heard that BA has or was going to use a B777 without First Class to PHX. As far as I know the 3 or 4 class airplanes all included First. How would BA have a 4-class plane without First, that doesn't make sense to me! I'm delighted to hear that PHX will welcome back the B747-400's that's great news!!! I look forward to seeing that beauty in PHX again!! How long is the Lufthansa B767-300 going to be here?

It wouldn't be a 4-class plane without First. It would be a 3-class plane without first. They will be used at first to Montreal and Denver starting 26 October. They will also be used to Dhaka, Calcutta, and Beijing.

How long is the Lufthansa B767-300 going to be here?

The last flight is 25 October (the plane is owned and operated by Condor, Lufthansa's leisure carrier). The new schedule with be an A340-300 operating Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday.

As MAH4546 said, the last flight of the Condor/Thomas Cook 767-300 is on October 25...thank God...missed those A343s. As for the BA 747-400 service, I am very happy. I flew the PHX-LGW route back when it was in place with the 744 and loved every minute, even though I got a bulkhead row with no window or recline. And yes, the PHX route is now out of LHR.
