What's The Shortest Flight You've Been On?

Fri Sep 12, 2003 1:16 pm

(I guess to qualify, your flight would have to be less than 30 mins - need to be a commercial scheduled flight - excludes joyrides.)
What was the aircraft type, flight distance, & the fare (excl. taxes) that you paid?

Mine was from LDU (Lahad Datu, Malaysia) to TMG (Tommanggong, also Malaysia) - the published distance was 54km, and the fare was MYR42 (USD11). The plane was a DH Twin Otter, with 19 seats. Flight time: 20 mins. To go there by road would have taken 3 hours!

Bandar Seri Begawan - Kota Kinabalu in a RBA 757. Also did it on a MH 734, but the 757 was more fun. Scheduled flight time is 45 minutes- in reality, it takes 20.
Fare was peanuts- which coincidentally, was the snack that was served!

Years ago, I flew couple of times on Air Wisconsin Bac 1-11 and Bae 146 between Appleton and Green Bay flight time average 6 to 8 minutes. One time , it was flight time longest was 14 minutes due heavy cloudy. It was fun short hop flight.

One time, it was unscheduled flight stop in the same city was in Detroit. I was in Detroit City downtown airport on Southwest B737-300 and have to pick up some passengers stranded due snowing for heading MIdway. We hop flight in about 9 minutes to Detroit Metro airport. It was fun flying thru light snowing!

Let me try my hand at this.

I've done Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island to Halifax, Nova Scotia, which is 99 air miles, on both Air Nova and Air Canada Jazz. The 21 day round trip fare is US$203.

Motoring by way of the 8-miles-long Confederation Bridge that connects Borden, PEI to Cape Tormentine, New Brunswick then on to Amherst, Nova Scotia, then eventually to Halifax can take 3 to 4 hours. And gasoline over the summer has been as high as CAD$ .82 a liter (US$3.81 a gallon). So it all balances out.  Nuts

LIH-HNL (approx 70 miles) AQ 737-200 25 minutes, FLL-PBI (approx 45 miles) PI DH8 20 minutes,BOS-PVD (49 air miles) NA 727-100 15 minutes, fare was $21.00 back in 1979. First 2 flights listed, I was nonreving.

Within Greece, I flew between the islands a lot back in the summer of 1994 on a family trip...I remember we took small Olympic Aviation planes, and the flights lasted perhaps half an hour or less? I can't really remember...

A couple of years ago I did BWI/PHL on US Airways and if I recall correctly the flight time was just 19 minutes. Not sure what the fare was as I was connecting onto a transatlantic flight. I know that the world's shortest scheduled flight is BA8872 from Westray to Papa Westray with a scheduled flight time of just 2 minutes and a fare of £28 return! But I've not flown on that one.

My Air Canada flight from Toronto to Saskatoon stopped in Regina on the way, and the Regina-Saskatoon portion was 25 min. A319-100 equipment, it seemed like we had barely taken off and we were descending once again.

I got a ride from the mechanics taxiing a Saab 340 from the gates to the hangar across the airport, we never took off but they must have been doing 35-40 mph across the field, does that count?  Big grin

DTM-PAD as part of a DTM-PAD-FRA flight with Augsburg Airways in 2000 or so. 70 miles in 10 minutes.

They used to have such crazy routings, which totally defied the purpose of flying. It would have been faster to drive to FRA from DTM than to take this onestop service.

But then, I wasn't in a hurry... and you know how weird we aviation nuts can be. Big grin

DAY-CVG 63 miles by air, currently scheduled flights. However - not economical to buy if you calculate cost per mile that you fly! Okay to use as a connection.

Mine would have to be in the Seychelles, between Mahe and Praslin (SEZ-PRI (I think!))
It was the first time I had been in such a small plane, and was a very bumpy, but very enjoyable 15 minutes from the international airport to the little hut on Praslin.

Paradise!

My shortest flight was from Kinshasa (FIH) to Brazzaville (BZV) in a Sabena Belgian World Airlines Boeing 747-300. Flight time was 7 minutes. Of course the aircraft had come from Brussels before I got on to do the small 'African' stretch.

BOS - PVC (Provincetown, MA), on a 9 seater Cape Air Cesna. 12 minutes.

Another one: OKC-TUL on a Northeastern (defunct) 72S back in 1984. 15 minutes. OKC was the intermediate stop on a direct flight from MSY to TUL.

For me, probably YVR-YQQ, in a CRAL Dash 8. The wheels seemed to have barely stopped turning from takeoff before it was time to land....  Big grin

One of the shortest flights I've seen on a commercial aircraft, but not sched service, was YYC-YQF, in a WS 737. They apparently used it as an Air Cadets charter.

Honolulu to Maui
Aloha Airlines
737-200
Took about 30 minutes, really quick

Fare was included in my $600 dollar coach ticket that I was dead lucky to find only two weeks before Christmas of this last year. Routing was Vancouver BC to Honolulu, Air Canada 744 (forget the flight number), then a week later, Aloha Airlines from HNL-OGG, and then back to Vancouver in a 767-300 by Air Canada, checked in by United, as they serve Air Canada due to the whole Star Alliance thing.

Don't let United take your I-94 card OUT of your passport if you are driving back to the US after arriving to Vancouver or you will be in a LOT of trouble. United ticket agents really messed it up for my girlfriend, flying with me. She's not a US citizen.

The flighttime of Westray to Papa Westray varies depending on the winds - since the two airports/strips are located at a roughly 90 degree angle to each other.

As for my shortest flight, I think it wasfrom CPH to the island of Bornholm. Not sure how long it is, but the SID/DP out of CPH ends over the airport on Bornholm!

RE: What's The Shortest Flight You've Been On?

Fri Sep 12, 2003 11:56 pm

One Sunday evening several summers ago I was on a 10 hour AA flight from LIT to DFW (yes, 10 hours, it's a long story). We were in a F-100 (ID: 2 CL) and were on the outskirts of Ft. Worth when the Captain said we'd have to land at Alliance airport to refuel, since there was a thunderstorm over DFW and we didn't have enough fuel to circle. After refueling we had to sit on an apron for 15 minutes to burn fuel, as the mechanics had put in too much (they didn't know how to ground the fueling unit either, which made me somewhat apprehensive, since there were thunderstorms only a few miles away).

We eventually took off around 10:15, got to DFW around 10:25, a distance of about 10 air miles, I believe. I don't remember if he ever brought the gear up, but I don't think he did. I remember seeing the landing lights on all the way to DFW. I caught a special to IAD, got there at 5:25, got home (DCA area) around 7:00, and very quickly called in to my work saying I wouldn't be in. I finally got to bed around 7:30.

I sometimes think back to that night, and how quickly it passed, all the problems we had encountered (mostly weather) notwithstanding. The flight had an especially good crew, with a very good sense of humor, and I think of them often. It's something I'll never forget, and something I hope I never have to go through again.

Gulf Air Airbus A320 flight from the old Dhahran Airport in Saudi Arabia to Bahrain (connected by bridge to Saudi Arabia)...it's a 15 minute flight.

No longer operated as the new airport at Dammam is opened (flight is longer now, perhaps 25 minutes).
