What Is Your Longest Flight?

Fri Sep 12, 2003 11:53 pm

Inspired by the 'shortest flight' thread, what is the longest non-stop, charter or scheduled flight that you have flown aboard? How long did it take? Which airline? Which aircraft?

JFK-CAI - 11.5 hrs on an Egyptair 747-300. On the return flight, the 743 had a mechanical and MS subsituted 2 767-200s instead. Both return flights required a fuel stop. Mine stoped at ORY, where there just happened to be an air traffic controller's strike in progress. This meant 5 hours on the tarmac, and by the time we left only one lav was working for the remaining 9 hours to JFK. We spent a miserable 18 hours on that flight.

  • Paris (CDG) to Los Angeles (LAX) on AF (744)

  • Singapore (SIN) to Frankfurt (FRA) on SQ (744)

  • The flight time on both flights was approximately 12 hours.

my longest flight was on VH-OJN Qantas 747-400 from Singapore to London in May. The flight lasted 14 Hours and 10 minutes non stop. I'd previously been flying around australia/far east on airlines from the one world alliance. it was nice to fly the finnair md11 from bangkok to singapore as a change, i never go to scandinavia so good oportunity to fly with them. The shortest flight on a widebody was Perth to Sydney on a Qantas A330-200 lasting little short of 4 hours.

we experienced a bad head wind on the ORY-JFK leg, then had to circle JFK for about 45 minutes before landing due to congestion, hence 9 hours flight time.

My longest flight was FRA-HKG-FRA on a CX 744. It took about 12 hours, eventhough the CX flightcrew was really nice I could hardly imagine being on board an a/c much longer than that. I was flying in economy class.

    regards

I did a 9.5hr flight, (BOM-LHR) then and 8.5 hr (LHR-ORD) flight back to back, with less than a hour layover. Then we did ORD-DFW after that... Talk about marathon.

JNB/SYD/JNB this summer. Actual time from point of break release to touchdown for the SYD/JNB flight was 13 hours 50 minutes (roughly 12 hours of the flight were over water). Equipment used was a Boeing 747-400 (VH-OJO).

Finnair's HEL-NRT, november 1984 when my dad was working in Japan.
The flight went over north pole and the aircraft was DC10-30-ER.
It took some 13-14 hours and was then the 2nd longest non-stop route (the longest was some Pan Am route) - if I recall correctly.

Last year I flew UA 862 from SYD-SFO (reg. N117UA). We boarded the plane on time and once we backed out from the gate we stayed on the tarmac for about 40 minutes (ATC delays). Once airborne the flight time was 13 hours 50 minutes. All toll we were on the a/c for 14 hours 30 minutes!!!

Here is the kicker--I suffer from migraines and I got a headache in SYD right before boarding. We were sitting in coach and the plane was packed!!!!

    I was *#$%$#[email protected]* MISERABLE!!!

I must have pissed God off or something Smile.

    Hi!

    My one was:

    Date: 2002/12/15
    Flight: ZRH/LAX
    Airline: LX
    Aircraft: MD11
    Registration: HB-IWM
    Total time: 12:50

Normal flight should last about 12:10 minutes, but in that day we lost about 20 minutes due to strong headwinds and finally 20 minutes after beeing instructed to change runway, we supposed to land passing over LAX but we had to aproach from the pacific ocean, we landed in the middle of a big storm!

Actually LHR-HKG takes under 11.30 hours and HKG-SYD is round 10 hours or so.

I will fly HKG-SIN-LHR early next week on SQ B747-400 and LHR-HKG on CX the week after. Can't wait for that, especially the Business Class on the return trip!

I think there should be a seperate forum for these kinds of threads because in no way they enhance our knowledge of airlines and airliners.
Asking about the longest route operated by an airline or an airliner is something but for each individual member's longest or shortest flight is something else.
I wouldn't have minded about it but too many threads like this keeps the more important subjects which are being discussed here out of the first page, thus they become more likely to be missed.

    All the best.

SIN-ZRH with SQ, sometimes 12h40 sometimes only 12h00. ZRH-SIN takes less time (11h00 to 11h30) because of the tail wind, sometimes flying 1060 km/h ground speed.

London to Osaka via Alaska in '93.
BA didn't have enough Trans-Siberian slots at the time.

    I have seen a HKG-LHR service taking 15 hours 42 minutes airbourne.

17 hrs on the plane (unscheduled stop in Bangor Maine for refueling...shady Tower Air used to do this regularly without pre-notice because fuel was cheaper than at JFK)

Mine was GRU-SXM-PMV-GRU o/b AeroCancun A300-600R F-ODSX, without leaving the plane. I was flight dispatcher for AeroCancun here at São Paulo and had to go together to provide flight ops and load planning support at SXM and PMV. Nice experience...made it twice...

Total time from block-to-block at GRU was around 14:30 hours, counting the ground time at each plane (SXM/PMV)... nice adventure... good time I had  Smile

    Cheers
