Cape Verde Refueling Stop

Sat Sep 13, 2003 1:07 am

On a return flight from Dakar to JFK on now defunct Air Afrique in 2000, our flight made an unscheduled stop in Cape Verde.
My question is now that South African has taken over that route, why are they making the same stop using a 747.
Air Afrique was using 767/A300 for that route.
Can someone explain the rationale?

SAA is stopping in either DKR or SID.

My wife flew JNB to JFK on SAA 747-400 last December. They made a scheduled fuel stop in Cape Verde. It is because of the hot-high altitude airport at JNB.
The JFK to JNB flight was non-stop.

SAA from this winter will operate

SA209 WeFrSu JNB-CPT-SID-ATL 744
SA211 MoTuThSa CPT-JNB-SID-ATL 744

SA210 TuThSa ATL-CPT-JNB 744
SA212 MoWeSu ATL-JNB-CPT 744
SA212 Fr ATL-JNB 744

SA203 Daily JNB-DKR-JFK 744

SA202 TuThFrSa JFK-JNB 744
SA204 MoWe JFK-DKR-JNB 744

So no SID JNB service at all - any stopover crew will have to carry on to ATL.

From Oct 2003 SAA will route all daily New York bound flight via Dakar instead of Sal.

The outbound Atlanta flights will continue to be served via Sal. At the moment flights with the B747-400 do return via Sal when conditions dictate. Once the A340-600's are introduced onto the route, all SA - Georgia">ATL - SA flights will be non-stop

Sal, Cape Verde has a lot of aviation history background.
It became a fuel stop for SAA in the 1960-70s as South Africa airplanes were no longer permitted to fly over many African nations. Same case for TAP - Air Portugal who were having same restrictions on flights to Angola/Mozambique.

I often landed in Sal as fuel stop for Cargolux, routes from South America to Luxembourg. Now, with our Argentina to Madrid flights, Sal and Recife, Brasil, are our "ETP" alternates for the Atlantic crossing, in case of emergency. Not many flights still stop in Sal, but it is still an excellent point for refueling for cargo airplanes with heavy payloads on South American to Europe routes.
