Sun Sep 14, 2003 8:17 am

Hi Everyone,

Did you even flew on the L1011s once before already and those are great airplanes and but, I will still missed it with these bird for 2 years ago and sad to see let it go for the Lockheed L1011 aircraft. I was flew on the L1011s for 5 times already. Those are wonderful plane for me and it been flew from ATL-DFW-HNL and back home from HNL-ATL nonstop. This is really very long flight for us and we were on the vacations with my uncle and 2 cousins, too. Well, talk ya later!  Smile

I too flew on 5 Delta L1011's, but all on flights under three hours (ie, BOS-ATL, ATL-MCO). Three L1011-1's and two L1011-500's to be exact. They are still my favorite aircraft of all time. My uncle used to fly on them from MSY to LAX weekly back in the 70's and 80's...always raved about those planes.

I have flown a few times on TriStars in the past, both on Delta and the former TWA.

TWA:

STL-ABQ 1988 (Coach Class)
JFK-BRU 1992 (First Class)
BRU-JFK 1992 (First Class)

Delta:

DFW-ATL 1993 (Coach Class)
SJU-MCO-DFW 1993 (Coach Class)

I actually would prefer the DC-10's cabin, but the uniqueness of the TriStar will be missed.

I have flown L1011 on many occasion, my first flight was back in 1977 on CX. It was a really nice plane except towards the end, no one really care to keep the plane/interior more up today, specially on Delta...

I flew:

HKG - MNL-HKG CX Coach
HKG - SIN CX First
HKG - BKK - SIN CX First
SFO - LAX - SFO TW Coach
LAX - HNL - LAX ( about 6 times within two months ) DL coach/first

Oh, I've done numerous flights on L-1011s....
With Delta ATL-MCO and return.
With TWA.... (all round trips) STL-LAX, STL-MCO, STL-CUN, STL-JFK, STL-BOS, JFK-AMS, PHL-LAX, STL-PHX... some of them like the Cancun, Phoenix, and Amsterdam several times.

Once - back in the early 80s or so. It was a DL Tristar 500.

I sat right in front of the wing, right side, window and the only thing I remember about the plane was that it was noisy!

The Tristar has served me well. Some notable routes on DL:

DFW-HNL
SLC-ANC
JFK-FRA
DFW-MCO
FLL-ATL
ATL-TPA
HNL-OGG
DFW-ATL
ATL-SEA

Even on Eastern, once upon a time, we took one of their L-1011's MCO-ATL

This aircraft is sorely missed.

I also have flown Tristars numerous times on DL-LGA/JFK-ATL and back. I sure do miss them. I can recall when my grandfather took his 1st flt on an airplane when he flew with me & my sister to NYC and it was on an L-1011 to LGA. It was over 25 years ago and whenever I visit him, he still talks about how he was amazed as to how something so big could get off the ground and stay in the air w/o falling!!!

I had the privilege to fly on the L-1011 while in service with Eastern back in the 70s. Most of my flights were on the ATL-SJU-ATL sector with a couple MIA-SJU and one RDU-ATL. All of the flights were enjoyable and the service reasonably well. I did have one situation when the 1011 was due in from JFK to MIA before going on to SJU and it went technical in JFK causing it to be 4 hours late. Instead of a 440P departure it was 840P and since this was at Christmas time the arrival in SJU was at midnight with the time zone change causing me to miss any last possible PRINAIR flights out of SJU. I waited in the airport until 520A and departed. SJU was quite dead during the night although at that time (70s) AVIANCA and VIASA both operated fllights to Spain refueling in SJU.

1973 to 1991 regularly. Probably a total of 100 or so flights. If the brakes on my tuck ever sounded like that, I'd scrap the beast. But I love the Tristar. Of course it's a Lockheed but even a Boeing fanatic, such as myself, will bow to superior design and engineering.

Does that make me a Lockheed fanatic?

My first flight to the US was with a Tristar from TWA. We got bumped from economy to business, very nice on a flight from AMS to JFK... Afterwards, I flew a couple of times over the pond on Tristars from both TWA and Delta. Very classy, almost old-fashioned, way to cross the Atlantic...  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

I've flown on the L1011, some series -150/250, but mostly the -500 series. Nearly all my flights on the L1011 have been with Air Canada, with one exception, which was on a British Airways L1011-500 from LHR-YEG in January, 1982. They were great planes to fly on, and I miss them.

I flew Delta TriStars on the following routes:

DFW-ATL-DFW (1995)
LAX-HNL (1990, 1992, 1994, 1996)
SFO-HNL (2000)
OGG-LAX (1992, 1994, 1996)
HNL-SAN-SLC (1994)
HNL-DFW (1990, 2000)

I recall that many of the TriStars assigned to Hawaii routes were still furnished in their original 1970s decor - the seats were in shades of yellow, orange and lime green.

Like many others have said, I remember the plane being very loud - the tail-mounted engine made a strange rumbling in the rear cabin, and the slipstream noise seemed much louder on the L1011 than on other aircraft.

Of course, who could forget those whining flaps coming down before landing!

I flew with Lt1011's just a few times and with only 2 airlines.
Delta Airlines (januarary 1997)
LAX-MCO

ATA (January 2000)
LAX-OGG
OGG-HNL-LAX
I really liked both flights. Both airlines were really good.

I flew on Cathay Pacific TriStars out of Kaitak many times, once with Royal Jordanian, but the most memorable was on a BWIA L1011 from London to Port of Spain. At the time I still smoked and the smoking cabin was at the front of the plane! Nice and quiet. Furthermore, we island hopped before getting to Trinidad. I remember the runway (I think it was at St Kitts) which crossed the only road in town which had booms that came down just like a railway crossing whenever a plane came in to land or takeoff.
Rather nice memories of the TriStar, sad to see it disappear slowly.

Caledionian Manchester - Heraklion - Manchester 1991

Very nice spacious and quiet aircraft.

All good flights. Don't think I'll have an opportunity to fly on an L1011 again.... Unless a TS 330 to POS goes technical and they sub one of their back-up L10s.  Laugh out loud

Used to work on the L1011, or "Trixie Tristar" as she was known to us. Flew on it for about 5 years on short, medium and long haul destinations. All from LGW. Mostly around Europe, but also to Sri Lanka, South Africa, Kenya, Carribbean, Florida, Far East, Middle East. Not always non stop of course, but a gem to work on, really ahead of its time cabin interior wise. None of our Aircraft had centre overhead bins, only down the sides, so it looked huge inside. The UFG (Under Floor Galley) was also Fantastic, with the two lifts, your own private window, no passengers ( sorry ).

Fab Aircraft.......

Forgot to mention the numerous times I've "worked" on the TS L1011s. Those lower galleys on the 100s were kinda cool. I liked riding up and down in the elevators (ha ha!)
I recently heard someone make a pun about Transat's tri stars going mx 10 out of 11 times (ha!)
I really like those tri star 500s. Won't see many of those babies in the not too distant future as airlines look towards more economical alternatives. ~sigh~

I flew on the L1011 with Delta from ATL-SFO back in December 2000. It had the inflight map system up in the front of the cabin. I have been wondering, was this one of the last ones left with Delta as I know they were phased out not too long afterwards?

Flew on several Pan Am and Eastern 1011's in 1985 between JFK and MIA while my family was relocating from NY to FL. I remember Eastern had the best apple pancakes I have ever tasted for breakfast in First Class.

Those are wonderful plane for me and it been flew from ATL-DFW-HNL and back home from HNL-ATL nonstop.

You flew HNL-ATL nonstop on a L1011? That was always my dream route like EWR-HNL with CO in the DC-10, I don't know why, but I always wanted to fly these routes.

Is ATL-HNL still nonstop and if, which aircraft is used, the 764? I know that the EWR-HNL route still exist but on a 764 (great airplane but I always wanted the DC-10 for such a flight).

To answer the question of this topic:

I never flew on the L1011, unfortunately  Sad. I live near DUS (hombase of LTU, major L1011 operator in Europe in the 70's and 80's) and I flew very often with LTU when I was a kid but I always had a flight on the 752 or 763, never on the TriStar  Pissed.

Delta's last revenue L1011 flight was on July 31, 2001 from MCO. TW pulled it from service earlier. ATA had some left after DL; think they are flying military charters - saw some pictures of them this spring hauling troops to the middle east.

I flew the L10 many times over the Atlantic and once from PDX to Taipei via Seoul as well as 3 times to Hawaii. Not the most up to date aircraft from an entertainment perspective but big and comfortable - like riding in a big Cadillac. Handled turbulence very well. Nothing will ever replace her.

Being a Delta Brat, I have flown on many TriStar flights on DL. There was even a time when the L-1011 flew to JAX. I always enjoyed the aircraft. Even when they got old and maintenance hogs. Everything seemed to rattle inside them!

I miss hearing the No. 2 startup in ATL. That low rumble that would vibrate even the concourse! It still gives me goosebumps!

The only other L-1011 I flew on beside DL was a Dragonair L-1011 on HKG-PEK segment. First time I realized they make seats a little smaller on Asia flights.

I miss the TriStar!

I rode on several L1011s with TWA..usually PHX-STL-BOS and back. Last
time on one for me was in March 2001..ATL-MCO..I figured it would be
the last time and it was a wonderful flight on a great airplane.

I flew the L1011 twice, both times with TWA. The first flight was in 1985, on a flight from Kansas City to JFK, via Chicago O'Hare. The flight was TWA 814, operating MCI-ORD-JFK-AMS. I still remember a coat of arms painted on the forward cabin bulkhead storage bin that had the shield of the City of Milan, Italy.

The second L1011 experience was in 1989, travelling from Zurich, Switzerland to JFK.

The L1011 was a signature aircraft for TWA. It was featured in many of its commercials, with the tag lines, "you're gonna like us" and "leading the way, TWA"

I had the fortune to ride Tri-Stars twice in 2 years.

1992: Delta "500s" from HNL to LAS via LAX and back. Could tell they were 500s because of the fin addition, and the shorter fuselage. Actually a fairly good ride. Better than a DC-10!

1994: Rich International "1s" from HNL to LAS non-stop charter. I remember they were ex-Eastern from the registration #s one was N104EA. However, the seating was very cramped.

I remembered that a relative took me on a tour of a TWA L-1011 back in the 80s. I won't say which airport. But I got to walk in and around the Tri-Star. I even got to ride the galley elevator down, and check out the below deck. I have to admit TWA kept their jets in good condition. The airline and aircraft are missed.

Only a couple of times

BA CDG-LHR Jan 1983

BW LHR-BGI Feb 1998
BW POS-SLU-(pos)-LHR Feb 1998 - Aircraft lost autopilot on approach to Saint Lucia, the man with the spanner hit it a few times but it didn't help, so we had to go back to Port of Spain - the pilot didn't want to cross the Atlantic without it. Hours of running around trying to get luggage and find the BeeWee person responsible for getting us a hotel etc. But it was a fun trip.

I flew following flights by Lockeed Tristar:

1984 Dusseldorf - Athens Dusseldorf
L-1011-1 LTU International Airways

1994 Frankfurt - Los Angeles - Frankfurt (nonstop !!!!)
L-1011-500 Delta Air Lines

1995 New York/JFK - St. Louis
L-1011-150 Trans World Airlines

I really liked those planes, especially the TWA one, as it was the first (and only) TWA Tristar which was repainted in the new TWA colors and still had the upgraded Comfort Class Cabin with foot rests. I really miss those planes!
I still miss Trans World Airlines and the L-1011

January 1978 I flew a Delta L1011 from DTW-FLL, I was really young then, but actually Delta flew direct from DTW to FLL without a stop in ATL. My parents told me how service was great and they had great meals on the flights. We had steak and eggs for breakfast and this was in coach.
