CI MD-11 Crash Video Released.

CI 642 crashed at Hong Kong international airport on August 22nd 1999 during a Typhoon. The MD-11 in the colours of Mandarin Airlines was landing on RWY 25L when its right wing hit the runway causing it to explode and flip over.

Whats the problem?

We are always given links to tiny little papers and news channels in the USA that you need to subsribe to. Now its a HONG KONG paper its a problem!. For the record the SCMP has already been voted the worlds best online newspaper.

Ever thought that another user will be able to READ my post view the video and save it for you guys to see??

OK, lets delete my post and you can all find the bloody video on your own.

Who cares whether the paper's from HK or the USA? The point is, you have to pay. Nobody's going to do that just to see the video.

Thanks for bringing this to our attention! I'm glad you posted this thread, let the children above complain to their mommies. At least now I know there is a video available, and if somebody is able to provide us with it, that's great! I think, give it time and it will be available for us to see.

Surely you of all people should not be advocating sharing passwords! You should know that if N754PR shares, then he will have his subscription cancelled immediately.

Thank you very much N754pr, it's nice that you gave us the heads up for this video. As a result, I now have the video, unfortunatly due to copyright reasons I cannot post it and I'm not going to risk uploading it. I'm sure it will pop up somewhere for free.

The video is horrific, an MD11 on approach in the typhoon, and then you see the right wing dipping and an explosion. It's amazing how there was only 3 fatalities in that crash.

Call me weird here but why do you want to watch a video of a plane crashing?

I've sadly been an eyewitness to 3 during my life and don't particularly want to see any more or think they should be advertised like bits of entertainment.

That's true, it's big news here that the video has been released. Front page of the newspaper. It's the discretion of the viewer to see it or not.

My god, that is really a horrific sight.......... Sad

...but actually, watching the video I get the impression that the explosion is not caused by the right WINGTIP , but the right GEAR or ENGINE hitting the ground causing the right wing to explode...but maybe I am wrong...

It's hard to tell from looking at the video but it does seem like the sink rate increased dramatically in the last few seconds, and it does appear to have a pretty hefty "bounce." If that was the case then I'd say the gear strut severed and broke through the wing. It reminds me a bit of how United 232 hit the ground at SUX.

Hi,

I was just browsing through Airdisaster.com (they say it was the wingtip touching the ground), but after watching the movie, I found the Aviation-safety.net's description of this accident more accurate...

...An attempt was made to flare in a slightly right wing down (less than 4 deg) attitude. The aircraft landed hard on its right main gear and the no.3 engine touched the runway. The right main gear separated and the right wing separated. The MD-11 then rolled inverted as it skidded off the runway in flames...

I#m suprised, that the explosion is very,very massive and almost goes off the split-second the plane touches down.

Hmm, couldn't really see that much, only the actual explosion (which IMO wasn't that big, considering). Still, lucky that so many survived. Makes you realize, just how quickly these things happen, when you read the reports it sounds like the pilots had ages to sort things out, when in reality it may only be a few seconds maximum.

The low number of casualties was solely because of the exceptional response time of the airport fire contingent at CLK. According to various reports, firemen were at the scene of the crash within 2 minutes and had the fire under control within 5 minutes and most of the 300 or so passengers were rescued and led to safety after just 8 minutes.

This was a pretty amazing feat considering the havoc and the adverse weather conditions at the time. In accidents, every second counts and fire services did what they were trained to do in an exemplary manner.

Awful video. I can't understand why they were attempting to land in such horrible conditions. You can see that the plane is almost out of control (even one of the women in the car says "lets see if he can make it, he's really shaky") Go around for christ's sake! Unbelievable.. Pissed

Yep.. that was one of those controlled bounce and rolls. Sorry for being sarcastic but IMHO, the pilot should've pulled up, firewalled the throttles and said "See y'all later" well before reaching the airport. I don't know how many 'cycles' are completed in typhoons in a given year but seeing that video should make it damn near zero. I feel sorry for that airplane and everyone onboard it. What was the probable cause? Anyone know?

Having strong winds and bumpy conditions alone are not enough to bypass an airport without giving it a try. If the weather is within aircraft limitations and other planes are getting in, there is no real reason to divert immediately.

When that crash happened, no-one really knew fully how bad the winds were at Chek Lap Kok. Now, there are sophisticated windshear and microburst detection machines installed all around the airport island and on nearby hills to warm pilots of the unusual winds found at the airport. Given a microburst alert, it is most airlines' policy to go-around immediately.

In the case of the China Airlines/Mandarin, most planes had been coming and and it was no reason to not try. They would not have known they were going to get a microburst/severe windshear at that point.

Pretty freaky.

If the plane rolled over to the right after crashing, perhaps that helped put out the fire (as well as the heavy rain, mentioned in the Matt Frei report.)

The woman in the car obviously saw the engine strike-- she says "oh my god" once just before the explosion.

We can look at it and say "that doesn't look bad" all we want, but for the people on board, it was hell.

i said in a previous post that i would,nt look at the video...well i could,nt resist it...It aint as bad as i thought.dont know if anyone noticed but when the camera zooms in on the doomed jet...as the plane flies over the telegraph pole/cables there are sparks visible as if there was either a malfunction with the engine or that it clipped something..what does anyone think or see.

And then what ... ? Do it all over again?
In a situation like this im sure the pilots had the passengers in there best interests and wanted to get the plane down ASAP, so a go-around was the last thing on there mind with the conditions they were facing.

EGFF...remember that getting the plan down ASAP is not always in the passengers best interests. There are many times when a go-around and diversion is a much safer option and one that should always be considered.

On another note, I remember reading somewhere that the Captain was actually an expat (Italian). Anyone have any information on this?

The Captain was a contract pilot that worked for Dublin based PARC Aviation. Spell PARC backwards and you get CRAP Innocent

As for the Sparks under the wing, I think you will find thats the reflection of the landing lights!!
