A320 Main Landing Gear

Thu Dec 30, 1999 9:28 pm

on my first trip to India i was astonished to discover that Indian Airlines A320 have a double main gear (4 wheels per gear) i have never seen any other airline that has this arrangement on a A320. I even talked to many technichans but none knew about this!

Any other airlines e.g. explanation for this?

Indian airlines requested this option for the A320 because they were going to be operated from some rough landing strips, thus to spread the weight of the aircraft over a bigger area, and thus have less pressure on the gear, Airbus certificated the four wheel main gear for them. As far as I know no other airline has excercised this option, but the cost to Airbus was minimal compared to a lost order.
Hope this answers your question!

Thanks for reply.
It makes sense! do you know which indian airports have such rough strips?
I have only seen some rather big ones and they were all good (DEL,BOM, MAD and BLR) ?

Brgds and happy new year!

I dont think it's so much "rough" strips, but the strength of the runway/taxiway pavement. At some Indian regional airports the higher weight of the A320 over the 737 would place too much wear and tear on the runway surfaces, so 4-wheel main bogies distribute the weight more evenly and reduce the possibility of having to resurface the runways at a huge cost!
