Which Major Carriers Don't Fly To ORD?

Fri Oct 03, 2003 4:54 am

Driving past ORD on my way North to Six Flags Great America, I thought about which airlines don't fly to ORD? With Chicago and Ohare being such a major economic center for not only the Midwest but The United States I wonder why, carriers like Qantas or Virgin Atlantic don't fly to ORD. Any one care to help me? thanks  Smile

I was thinking about posting a topic on this also; but more along of the lines of what airlines would you like to see at O'Hare? So, along these lines, here's my list:

Airlines that don't fly to ORD that I would like to see there:

Austrian Airlines (return service)
Lauda Air (begin service)
Virgin Atlantic (return service)
JAL (not sure if they still service)
JAT (return service)
CSA (begin service)
All Nippon (return service)
SN Brussles (return service [Sabena])
Edelweiss (begin service)
Qantas (begin service)
Cathay Pacific (begin service)
South African (begin service--put those A345s to use  Smile )

Additionally, I'm continually surprised that no major South American carrier operates to and from ORD; would like to see some of those and a while.

Whoops, sorry, I meant A346s...my mind's in gutter--was just looking at photos of A345s while I wrote that...but SAA might order some A345s in the near future.

JAL still serves ORD.

And why would both Austrian and Lauda serve ORD? That would be kinda silly...  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

What's so silly about two airlines flying from the same country? BMI and BA both fly to ORD from the UK; Aeromexico and Mexicana both fly to ORD from Mexico; Privat Air and Lufthansa both fly from Germany; what's so silly about it? Privat Air operates on behalf of Lufthansa, what's wrong with Lauda and Austrian have similar agreement to provide service to Austria?

Major US carriers that don't fly into ORD:

Southwest
ATA

The LCCs prefer to go into MDW because it is a cheaper airport to operate out of.

"Mexicana if im not mistaken doesnt fly to ORD anymore they fly just to MDW."

Galvan, you are mistaken--Mexicana does still fly to ORD, they added MDW, they didn't discontinue ORD; Mexican flies direct from Acapulco and Mexico City to ORD.

Mexicana dropped MDW and are ORD exclusively as of May 31.

The three airlines this Chicagoland resident and frequent flier would like to see at ORD are JetBlue, JetBlue, and JetBlue.

Austrian and Lauda are different a different situation than British Midland and British Airways. Namely their native countries are of substantially different demand.

Further, as I can deduct it, Austrian and Lauda are converging to one airline - the Lauda, Tyrolean, and Austrian are converging to form the Austrian airlines group.

"Privat Air and Lufthansa..." Good try; but the Privat Air flight you refer to is Lufthansa, LH happen to damp-lease some planes from Privat Air, who aren't an airline at all.

And Edelweiss?! A major airline. Oh sure. I think TAAG Angola and Air Nuigini should fly to O'Hare as well.

Some people here dont know jack about what is going on at ORD and are posting wild rumors....

Where the hell does one get that neither JAL or MX dont fly to ORD? It would take 1 second to find that if you are not sure.

"What's so silly about two airlines flying from the same country? BMI and BA both fly to ORD from the UK; Aeromexico and Mexicana both fly to ORD from Mexico"

Last time I checked BMI and BA were competition and Lauda and Austrian belong to the same parent company (Austrian Group)

"lease some planes from Privat Air, who aren't an airline at all."

How is PrivatAir not an airline? Just because they do leases and charter ops on behalf of other carriers.

"Major US carriers that don't fly into ORD:

Southwest
ATA
"

Wrong again, ATA does have charters out of ORD (Summertime even 2x daily) with both 737s and 757s.

"Mexican flies direct from Acapulco and Mexico City to ORD. "

Uhh no.

MX Flies ORD-Guadalajara, Monterrey, Mexico City, and Puerto Vallarta with in-season scheduled charters to Acapulco.

It is very possible that JAT Airways will resume flights to Chicago (ORD) in a few years. They have already filed a request to operate the BEG-JFK-ORD route one year ago to DOT.

Totally uneducated, but I don't think it would be beneficial for SA to start non-stop (or tech-stop) to SA - Illinois">ORD. They have a great partnership with DL through SA - Georgia">ATL.

I thought the questions was implied scheduled service not charters, so really ATA/TZ does not offer service to ORD on a scheduled bases.

Other major players not at ORD are:

Air China
Emirates
Egypt Air
Gulf Air
Aeroflot
Asiana
Saudia
Air Portugal

Can someone please explain to me what ETHIOPIAN AIRLINES sees in IAD that theyve been flying there for so many years now? Why not ORD? Why IAD...whats the reason-incentive-logic for it?
