Denver's airport code is DEN. People commonly refer to the current facility as DIA, which distingushes it from Stapleton, the previous airport. In Tampa Bay, people often refer to Tampa International Airport as TIA, even though its airport code is TPA.

DEN = IATA code for Denver International Airport

DIA = Denver International Airport

For those who remember when DIA was still on the drawing boards (with 5 terminals, twelve runways and two close-in hotels with the terminal being enclosed in glass rather than teflon) wasn't there a plan to issue Denver International Airport the a new IATA code, DNX?

What ever happened to this?

Cospn, Stapleton has long since been shut down. Although some portions of it remain (chunks of runway here and here, a few hangars, ...), it is not an active airport. It always seems to be up in the air with what they'll do with the land. Corporate development, housing, retail, golf course, ... you name it.

The weather plane you're thinking of is most likely the C-130 based at Denver / Jeffco airport (BJC).

Cospn,

Stapleton is gone. They demolished the whole thing except for a Continental hanger which was converted to a Bowling alley, the parking garage which was bought by the Regional Transportation District (company that runs public transit buses and light-rail in Denver), and the control tower which will remain as a reminder.

They are transforming the land into homes, offices, etc.

That government weather plane, a WC-130 flies out of Buckley AFB which is close to Stapleton and the new Denver Airport.

Its like Denver here in Kansas City too. Most people call our airport KCI when its really MCI. KCI makes more sense, but its always MCI to me.
