Tower Air was the only airline that never flew on schedule. It's a miracle they've stayed in business for 15 years.

Actually how bad was Tower Air???

From what I heard, for the price you pay, you have nothing to complain.

Yea if you didn't care about when the plane gets there!  Smile
Most Tower Air flights were NEVER ontime. They flew on former PAA 747's with worn interiors. I would often hear of duct taped accessories on these old birds. They went out in May 2000.

I heard this one horror story about I man going to SFO on Tower. The plane was late, his headphone jack was broken, and the reading lamp was burnt out. When he pointed this out to a flight attendant she offered to put the emergency exit light on!

I know that of FF was actually never on-time either and it was always delayed at JFK base. Which one is almost more than of 3 years already and is no longer flying on Tower Air either.

Why would Tower Air care for been on time when their schedule service(regular pax's) was only 10% of their bussiness.90% of their bussiness was charter and military,I bet those were on time all the time ($$$$$$$$).It was a big mistake to get into regular pax service, they were not ready for it.If they had kept their operations only for charter and military they would be in bussiness today. As for them flying old airplane thats not strange,ATA still uses the L-1011 for charter and World Airways and Omni Air International fly airplanes other airlines are retiring. Just my opinion!

Tower Air??? Thank god they are gone...their aircraft always looked like they were about to fall apart...from the interior to the exterior to the underside of the aircraft. I had the chance to look at one upclose and was horrifed...I mean...that thing had ductape everywhere....even under the freakiin wing!!!!!

I flew Tower Air charter JFK-TLV-JFK

The outbound flight was 6 hours late

The inbound flight took off only 30 minutes late but we had an unscheduled stop for fuel in Bangor, ME not because we were out of fuel but because Tower Air used to do this because of the horrendous gas prices at JFK...so shady! Also, upon landing, all of the oxygen masks in the plane came down...needless to say it was quite an experience. This is one airline that is definitely not missed.

I question whether this is correct: I didn't think a fully-loaded 747 could land full of fuel.

After flying from TLV to Bangor, I don't think they were exactly full of fuel.

I had an opportunity if you can call it that to fly Tower from JFK to LAX a few years back.
They actually called passengers to move UP the departure time much too close to a Tel Aviv departure for my use.
The terminal was rammed at 5AM as you can imagine since we're talking 747's here!
The aircraft interior was worn, but the service was thankfully unmemorable after we finally left.
I do remember arriving at some distant gate at LAX though, we walked a country mile to get to baggage claim.
I don't think they are terribly missed, especially not here on this board!

767Lover - maybe they only filled a portion of the tank...regardless, they fueled it while we sat on the plane and it took almost 30 minutes so it must have been a good amount.

Yes World Airways is picking up planes another airline is retiring; they are picking up some of the MD-11s Delta are retiring, and these a/c are still relatively young, as they were delivered in the 1990s. I mean, it not like they're picking up the some of the DC-10s that UA and CO have retired.

Well, that should convince FAA that they overlooked something. Imagine a report by NTSB, a 747's wing fell off at FL330 after the duct tape separated.

By the way, has anyone ever thought that TowerAir should be revived like PanAm or TWA? Not me definitely.

I remember they used two Tower Air 747's in the film Turbulance. Obviously the cabin in the film was a studio mock-up. By the sound of it I think you yanks didn't care much for this airline. Sounds a bit like our beloved Caledonian, which although was once an airline to be proud of. It decayed into an ageing fleet of bandaged L1011's and DC10's

RT JFK to AMS in 1997 (I think.) "Business Class" for an extra 50 bucks, totaling $348. On the return, craft stuck in Bombay for 2 days. No other airline would honor the ticket (ha ha ha.) Hey!!!! 2 extra days in Amsterdam (even at my expense) isn't necessarily a bad thing....
