Most Frequently Traveled U.S. City Pairs
Can someone please tell me where I can find information pertaining to this topic. Statistics I'm interested in are the routes with the most passengers flown, average ticket prices for these routes, flights per day/year, seat capacity. Thanks a lot. This will really help me out.

I know the most heavily traveled city pair in the country is NYC (all airports)-FLL, but am not sure where you can get the precise numbers.

it is definitely not just FLL. it is a combination of NYC - PBI, MIA, and FLL, all of which are in one metropolitan area.

Yes... believe it or not, FLL. The number of passengers flying between FLL and NYC is amazing. That's why there are so many competitors in the market... consider B6's (depending on time of year) 10 daily roundtrips, plus CO, Delta/Song, AA, Spirit all with non-stops, not to mention all the connecting possibilities (US, UA, AirTran, etc.). It's the #1 city pair in the country.

TWFirst, i know you live in ft. lauderdale, but this discussion has already been had on this board at least 5 times. if you can produce #'s that show NYC - FLL is tops, i'll change my mind. but you're just wrong. the combination of the entire metropolitan (MIA, FLL, PBI) area does combine to create one of the most frequently travelled routes in the country.

Of course adding MIA and PBI to FLL creates "one of the most requently travelled routes in the country"... that's logical considering NYC-FLL is THE most heavily travelled route. I invite you to provide the links to either a) the 5 threads you mention previously discussing this, or b) statistics from external sources proving YOUR point. And, then, once you do that, perhaps I'll change MY mind.

When you combine all airports in a metro region, it is San Francisco to Los Angeles with about 18,000 passengers a day. Miami to New York City, excluding Islip, is about 15,500 a day, placing it at second.
When you go by what the DOT says (DOT does not count Miami, LA, and San Fran airports together; but does count Chicago, NYC, Houston, and Dallas airports as one) it is Ft. Lauderdale-New York City with over 8,000 passengers a day.
I am not on my home computer right now, but later today I will post the link to O&D traffic numbers proving that Ft. Lauderdale-New York City, not including MIA and PBI, is indeed #1.

As MAH4546 said, NYC-FLL ends up at the top of DOT's list due to their peculiar choice of airport groupings. But the case for it is slightly stronger than it used to be.
Some people used to claim MIA/PBI/FLL-JFK/LGA/EWR was the busiest in the US, which it never was. But people who like to think FLL-NYC is the busiest could reasonably question how many California airports can be grouped now that they've partially slimmed down their own favorite.
Maybe I'll eventually find the link to the DOT stats-- they're never up to date, but better than nothing.

Just a word of caution regarding the DOT data: There is a gaping hole in the enplanement data provide by the carriers to the DOT. Only “Large certificated air carriers”, which is defined as any carrier operating aircraft of 60 seats or more, are required to provide monthly enplanement data on their T-100’s. That means that the DOT city-pair numbers don’t include enplanement data from some fairly significant carriers, such as Skywest.

So in 2001 NYC-Florida and NYC-LAX weren't leaders-- but FLL has presumably grown since.
