I know there has been a lot of talk of UA bringing back the 747's these days. I just wanted to say I went through LAX on Sunday and saw four UA 744's-- three parked next to each other at the end of T7, and economics aside, all I have to say is: gorgeous.

Actually after looking at that list, I am trying to figure out where they were going. One was definitely 891 to NRT. Another one, and I thought this was strange when I saw it, was going to Sydney, but it was at noon or so, so it didn't make sense, since their SYD flight goes late in the evening. I can't remember the flight no, but I am SURE it was going to Sydney. I sat in front of the gate agent as he closed the flight. That would be one DELAYED flight. Not sure about the other one, but I think was going to Denver.

Those UA 747-400s sure do look funny flying for Thai Airways still in UA colors. Anyone want to take bets on when the 744s returned to service go back to the desert?

Right on KI777jfk....but don't get me wrong..I'm by no means a UAL fan ...but hey since they have the largest US fleet of 744s...hell yea...bring 'em on, the more the better. Just why didn't Crandall go with the 744s...I could get behind that 100%. But reality is .....UAL, so reluctantly, I too shout, 'Go United!'

I remember Crandall commenting about how it was a mistake not to get in on a 744 order earlier in the game. I think if they did and given the way they manage their operation vs UAL....wow..the thought is staggering.

I was looking into taking a 744 LAX-ORD or IAD this December,but they weren't flying them according to the downloadable timetable. So I took a SNA-ORD flight instead on a 757.

Sure would be nice to see more UA 747-400s flying. I agree that AA should have bought the 747-400 earlier on; it would do well on their European and Pacific routes and they could be more competitive with UA and NWA. The 777, though a nice aircraft, doesn't have the presence or the personality of the 747.

United_Fan, that SUX...you're right, they pulled it. I checked all the way into next July and it's still a no show! Bummer. But somehow I get the weird feeling...it'll be back if the continue to keep the IAD hub thriving.

You're right,BN747,you would think that they would wait til after Jan 1st to pull transcon 74's ,but hopefully they are needed for Asian ops.
I'de like to fly on a 74,as it and the 762 are the only mainline UA I haven't been on.

Triscl - Yeah, I agree seeing three 744's parked together is a nice sight.
SFO is also a good spot to see many UA744's together especially in the late morning/noon you can see Flights 837, 853, 857, 805, 152.

BN747 - I would also like to see UA's SFO-TPE and SFO-PEK routes back in action.

Most of the routes mentioned by Kl777JFK are not operated by a 744. UA does not fly SFO-TPE SFO-PEK at all currently.

Guys, you forgot SFO-ORD and ORD-SFO are also operated by a 747-400. I can't wait to see them back in Denver - gotta list myself on a flight and go!

UA 837/838 have been 744s since 1 October. I flew them about 2 weeks ago, they were definitely 744s !

Unfortunately, 800/801 between NRT and SIN will be reverting to 777s instead of 744s.

BN747: LAX-LHR will go to a 744 in Apr04 so it's not currently flown with a 744.

RoyalOrchid773: BKK-NRT changed to a 744 on 1Oc03.

Aussie747: IAD-LHR will go to 3 daily flights starting begininng of Nov03 and one of them will be a 744.

AN-225: SFO-ORD will also start begininng of Nov03 but it's not currently flown with a 744.

No 744 to DEN; my mistake. Confused it with SFO-ORD.

I flew on N122UA (B747-400) SFO-ORD on 5th September 2003 flight number UA 150. That aircraft just came back from NRT (I saw..and took!!...freshly menus left in seat pockets C class).

Don't know if they change the aircraft to a smaller one already?

AN-225: I'm sure you flew on a 744 but I looked at the schedules this week and I did not see any 744s between SFO and ORD. It's always nice to fly on a big plane like that even for a short flight.

The777Man - I checked in my computer right now and I see 744 on SFO-ORD routes: UA 152, Departure SFO is 1:40pm Arrival in ORD is 7:41pm.
ORD-SFO UA 857, Departure ORD is 10:00am Arrival in SFO is 12:17pm. UA is operating this flight as a 744 until October 25, 2003.

Glad to see more 747's into LHR, would be nice to get the 777 back to AKL.

Why doesn't United fly nonstop from the US to Melbourne? Didn't they at one point? Now it is direct from the US to Sydney then a short hop over to Melbourne. Flew it last year. It is quite and exhilerating takeoff with so few passengers and so little fuel for such a short flight.

Kl777jfk,how often did UA put 744's into LAS ? There is only 1 pic of one . Was it a sub for a DC-10 ? That would be sweet if they brought that back,as UA doesn't fly wide-bodies to LAS anymore.

Oh what a great bird!

I remeber sitting on a UA 744 from IAD to DEN...we had to wait in IAD, due to technical probs...3 hrs in the evening heat, moisture, t-storm...no APU, con AirCon, no nothing...at least serving ice-water, headphones and movies...

I was 16 and pretty puzzled, because I was on a LH744 between FRA and IAD, then another 744 for the hop between IAD and DEN...which is not a hop actually, but to me it was a domestic connection...measured with European feelings...would be weird to see a LH744 between STR and HAM, I just made it on a 733...

Yeah, UA was a nice experience. Best wishes to the guys...last year I was on an AtlanticCoast CRJ between IAD and BNA, a branch of UA, this was the damned cutest FA I ever saw, the youngest porbably too...had a good time...actually without her and in severe turbs...but I enjoyed the flight (was the last one boarding...IAD is huge, changed Terminal...all that stuff...)...

Yeah, unfortunately, at least for the time being, Denver has no UA 744 service. . .even where it seems to be needed. For example, I'm booked on a couple UA 777 flights going DEN-SFO-DEN in about two weeks. I've checked the flights' seatmaps via travel agent ways and guess what. . .there isn't a seat on either 777 either way. . .go figure. Over the last few weeks, the seats quickly melted away and the flights became "packed" in no time.

Actually there is an airline called Thai Orient (I think that's the name Smile

) (not TG) that is flying a 747-200 in UA colors minus the tail and titles. As far as I know the deal to buy 7 of UA's 747-400 is dead in the water ...er sky.

That poor little SYD-MEL-SYD run is my favourite flight on a 744. Was on UA815 SYD-MEL yesterday morning. Pax load was probably no more than 120. Low fuel. The thing took off like a rocket straight to FL380. Impressive to say the least.

Just checked at work and yes, UA does currently fly 744s SFO-ORD. My mistake, UA does fly it until 25Oct03. Looks like I also forgpt the SYD-MEL portion that's also flown on a 744.......

UA used to fly a lot of 744s on domestic routes like SFO-Den. LAX-DEN, ORD-DEN etc.

ORD-LAS was a 744 for at last 3 months from what I remember.

Hate to bring this post back all the way to the beginning, but I'd rather do this than post a whole new one. . .

Earlier this week, I think it was Tuesday, maybe, I was witness to a UA744 that took off to the west and headed on the SFO pathway from Denver. I watched it for a good 10 to 15 minutes until it faded out of site.

So we still get them, I just don't the current schedules, or a/c replacement schedule of eventualities.

Just thought I'd update those folks who care about our UA "whales" situation.

...I´m very sorry to disappoint you guys!

Someone said it is a good sign, that UA is bringing back its 747-400 into service!
That is not quite true! The only reason they´re bringing them back is simply because Boeing offered them better leasing rates for the 744 than for the 777! It´s that simple!

However, I also love to see them coming back!
I love United and I wish them nothing but the best, and success for the future!
Hope they´ll soon be able to emerge from Chapter 11 better and stronger than ever before!!!

But on the other hand, as much as I love the 747 (well there is still something special about flying on a 747 Jumbo-Jet), the UA 777 is really a wonderful plane and much more comfortable than the UA 747-400!
For example Uniteds 747´s does not offer personal IFE system for economy class passengers, while the 777´s and even 767´s flown by United internationally do!
Also I was told by several UA Flight Attendants that it is in fact a lot easier and much more relaxed to work the 777!
However due to the 4 engines most longhaul trips are much faster on a 747!

By the way I also heard rumors that they wanna switch the early ORD-FRA-ORD flight back to 747-400 operation, but leave the later flight as well as both IAD flights and the SFO flight to the 777.
Anyhow, I would love to see them expanding their FRA services!
We will see!

Well, let´s just all hope for the best for United, and enjoy their 747´s rising back to the skies!

Yes...at one point there was a nonstop between LAX and MEL. Flight 842 or 847...one of those two...someone else would have to confirm that for me. Not sure on dates, but it may have been cancelled due to low load factors and/or 9/11.

I think they also did LAX-AKL-MEL and back again. Now it's just SFO/LAX-SYD-MEL.

Hope they fit those 744s with PTVs...they do longer segments than the 763s and still don't get PTVs???? What kind of logic is that?

Based on the summer schedule (2003) in FS2k2, the UA 744 utilization only required 15 planes...hope the number goes up....
