Concorde Throttle Count-down

Sun Oct 26, 2003 2:51 pm

Why is it when before Concorde's throttles are advanced, the pilot calls out "3,2,1, now!" I also noticed that during noise abatement, they say "3,2,1, noise" before bringing the throttles back. Why the count-down? I know Concorde used after-burners on take-off, so perhaps it had something to do with that. BA had this count-down procedure and I assume AF was the same way.

I'll assume it is just what the pilots of Concorde do, maybe of other planes as well. Like the space shuttle...special vehicle, let's give her a countdown!

Its a countdown to the noise-abatement procedure they have on board Concorde. Concorde has to throttle back its engines and disengage reheat (afterburners) to reduce the amount of noise it produces to be a 'good neighbour' as Captain Bannister refers to it.

This occurs shortly after takeoff.
