Air Canada A340-500s
Does anyone know what's going on with Air Canada's new A340s. I've heard stories that they aren't taking delivery of them anymore. Whats the deal there?

I think Air Canada can not afford them under their new business plan, prehaps on day in the future they will concider taking them. Right now Air Canada is dumping large planes such as the Boeing747-400 (ASSHOLES) 
. They can not suport them on their networks.

Rumors seem to indicate that they are going to Emirates instead. Air Canada certainly won't be taking them.

Other rumours say they will get them. There is still no credible information. If Emirates were to get them, why aren't they there already? Why have the aircraft sit there doing nothing? It indicates there's still a chance they will come.

What I have heard from AC itself, is that they do not want the A340-500.. rather they want the A340-600.

The 2 345's remain in AC colours in temp storage at Chateauroux, France. Airbus has talked with Emirates, Qatar, Iran Air, SAA & Air Tahiti Nui about them.....but so far no takers.
The 345 has limited appeal...its payload is not much greater than the 343 although its range is MUCH greater. Hence the only worthwhile routes are high yield long/thin routes (beyond the range of the 343) of which AC has none.
The status of the 3 ordered 346's is also up in the air as AC has not publicly indicated that they are taking them yet.

I dumped at the gybe mark in strong winds when I looked up at a Porter Q400 on finals. Can't stop spotting.

I could touch their new A345 at CHR a few months ago, what a splendid looking aircraft!
Their engines are huge if you stand just in front of them...
It is an extremely nice looking plane in the AC colours, hope that AC will take them!

The 345's were ordered back in 1998 for a proposed YYZ-HKG nonstop route.
Just prior to delivery last year, they were initially earmarked for YYZ-NRT replacing the 343.

Aerolineas Argentinas should take delivery of those ... they really need new aircraft and they do have long routes... EZE-SYD..

AC ordered the A345 before they went into bankrupcy and changed their business plan. There was mention of nonstop routes like Toronto - Hong Kong, Toronto - Tokyo and Vancouver - Sydney. None of those (maybe with the exception of Vancouver-Sydney) seem to be making much sense in the current evironment
