Thanks for your explanation. And yes, I do seem to recall that the noise stopped after reaching cruise altitude, so that could have been it. Not that it worries me, just that I find the whining sound pretty loud and very ear-piercing, if you know what I mean!
As for IFE, yes, I've had the bad luck happen on me again this year, again flying

SIN, but this time on B777-212ER
9V-SVE!.. Something must have short-circuited then, as I was actually watching a movie, and my screen just turned blank all of a sudden, altho the audio was still there! Could listen to the radio, and even the movie channels etc, but just nothing from the screen. The crew tried to reset it, but was unsuccessful.
And yes, I too don't seem to recall SIA painting model numbers on their planes, except some bits during early 80s when the had "3TEN" painted on their A310-200s - but that could have been more of a nickname for the plane rather than model numbers. And BTW, SGA, SGB, etc... reminds me of their B727-212 "Hightails", as they also had the SGx regn..!
