A very nice LeaderShip aircraft there!

Without LeaderShip titles though it seems.

Nice engines. They look so disproportionate to the rest of the aircraft though!

No it doesn't... The fuselage is very much longer and engines are bigger, very much bigger.

The thing just looks ugly. B777-300ERs would look much, much nicer, IMO.

It just happens that the top of the Airbus fuselage does not have enough space for the "Singapore Airlines" title. Other than that, I think the plane looks pretty sleek.

B777-300ERs would look too long and boring, IMHO. Haha, not like we don't have enough 777s here in SIN.

I don't get tired of seeing them, at least! Because of the titling, that's why I think the A345 looks especially hideous in SQ colours. The EK one looks magnificent, though.

I think it says 'LeaderShip A340-500' just aft of door 1L. Any idea what the purpose is of the huge and hideous winglets on the 343 prototype?

Wow, a really sleek and beautiful aircraft. The engines really look huge though. But it's a great plane... good to see the A340 back in SQ's fleet!
9V-SVA, I'm sure you'll grow to like it; maybe it's just the angle that makes it seem ugly to you.

Im sorry I had to comment but DaV... that's a scary thought hearing someone say they dont like the SQ livery.. to me that's one of the few liveries left unchanged that should never be changed. Big grin

Of course now those gorgeous Trent 500s are on the case, not only does it make the aircraft look more balanced i.e. doesn't have four beer kegs hanging off the wing Wink/being sarcastic

but also gives it the ability to do such things as "Zoom" climbs! Big thumbs up

Good day,

Well, it really is a beautiful plane. Yeah, I think the title on the first few windows says "Airbus Industrie". Just wondering whether they will paint the dubbed name "Leadership" onto the plane like the other planes; "Jubilee", "Megatop", "Mega Ark", & the ex-"Celestar"?

Probably a photo of this plane landing or taking off would change the view of the anti-A340s. I bet it would be a breath-taking photo.

as strange as those little engines on the -300 might look, the new bigger engines now look TOO big! for a plane with such narrow wings. I'll stay with the -300 as far as looks are concerned im not anti a340.. im anti-stretch.. over stretch in this case! just like any recent over stretch be it airbus or boeing: 757, 777, .. they just dont look right

As far as airplane aesthetics go, the A345 is a vast improvement over the original 340 airplanes. It kind of reminds of me of the re-engined DC-8. Thanks for posting that photo and link.

Before any of you A340 bashers go on any further, can I ask if any of you have flown a 340 before, I mean if you have had a chance on the controls? If not, keep your traps shut because you sound kinda dumb. All this whining about engines looking too big, "apparent" power, oversized winglets... Give it a rest man! Most of you have not even seen the real airplane, so give it a chance!

If you have a passion for airliners, I think that love should be given out equally to all airplane types, big, small, airbus, boeing.... Be considerate of us pilots over here who have to fly on some of the things you're knocking on.

So what if the 343's performance is kinda marginal? It's designed that way. I've never flown an airplane that's so economical yet graceful. It's got wonderful systems and you're always assured of making it to your destination even if stuck at a lower FL or having tons of weather enroute.

It's nice to see a former A343 pilot at SIA saying nice things about the A343. I was begining to think that all Singaporeans are A340 haters like our resident "expert" 9V-SVA, who obviously doesn't know what he's talking about.

The A340-300 is by far the nicest aircraft I've flown on. It's quiet, steady, smooth, it's got the spacious 2-4-2 config in cattle class and its feminine touch makes it very graceful looking. The A343 is my prefered aircraft for long-haul flying.

Haven't flown on the A345/346 but from what I hear, they're even better.

It seems whining is the popular thing to do these days. I was searching for Air Canada A330/340 reviews and the first result that I got on google was this shameless A330/340 bitching session. http://www.dooyoo.co.uk/cityguide_travel/travel/air_canada/_review/391745/

Notice too that a normal A340 cabin layout in economy is 2-4-2. SQ only has 2-3-2 for this aircraft.

I never liked the A340 visually all that much until I saw these new ugly over stretched cigar looking things. Now it doesnt look so bad. I bet this new A340-500 is a great beast of a plane. Now, I was at JFK last week and saw it in virgin colors. Didnt like it. that nosewheel is too far up front near the nose for such a long plane, nose by the way looks too old school simple for such modern looking aircraft. Engines look TOO BIG, fuselage TOO LONG.. I guess its subjective, but i cant see how you would think something like that is aesthetically pleaseing after seeing an L1011, 747, 727, 707... DC-8 stretch, thats another story, the DC-8 short or long is a classic looking airplane

What you saw was an A340-600.
Virgin has no 500's. The 600 looks much more stretched than the -500.

Hats off to you mate - you've really made a point. I must say I've only flown on the A343 twice - both on SQ's - 9V-SJE and pV-SJG, on CHC-SIN and SIN-CHC way back on 09/01 (yes, just a couple of days after 9/11). I actually do like the A343, very nice aircraft, but it didn't seem as quiet as it seemed then, especially at takeoff from CHC. Minutes after takeoff, we heard thing loud "whinging sound" from the engines (we were seated in row 11 then), lasted for about 10 mins. My partner remarked that she's heard that same sound before, flying the same aircraft, on the same route. It was quite ear-piercing really. But still, I've had good experience on it. I wonder what the sound it - any ideas? In fact, all my SQ flights have been rather pleasant.

As for the little words under the wondows aft of D1L, could it be Airbus A340-500, with the airbus logo preceeding the word Airbus?..

WLG-Spotter, did the sound start when the power on the engines was reduced after takeoff? Because there is a phase during ascent, when power is reduced where, I think, the engines sometimes tend to sound a bit strange... but - regardless of that phase with strange-sounding engines: I, as passenger - 'cause I'm no pilot - love the A340-300... and I can't wait to get to fly in a -500 or -600...

To be honest, I can't really remember now. But you could be right too - the sound could have occured during/after the engines were powered down after takeoff.

But nevertheless, I had an excellent flight really, execpt for the fact that our IFE was down for the whole section of the cabin thru-out the flight. But it didn't really bother us, cos the service was excellent, and we've got good seats. You see, we were booked on economy, but they converted part of the Raffles Class section seats into economy, and we've got ther J class seats. And oh, BTW, made a mistake in my original post - we were actually seated in row 14, instead of row 11.

WLG-Spotter,

The whining sound could have come from a leaky seal in your area of the cabin. It's quite a common occurence in most airplanes and I must admit does scare some passengers. It should have disappeared once you reached cruise altitude yah? This was a possible explanation offered to me by an engineer when I asked.

The IFE has always been a huge headache on our airplanes. Quite a lot of times they are down. Don't know if the problem is unique to the Matsushita system that we use. I remember we used to have a checklist on what to do should the system overheat in flight! It was serious enough and considered a possibility! The problem is not unique to the 343 but across the entire fleet as the same system is used. Hope the 345 has a more reliable IFE.

I don't recall SIA painting model numbers on their aircraft ever. But is sure looks like it on SGB. Wonder why there aren't any pictures of SGA yet. I sent the link of the pic to the 345 fleet management. Apparently i think it's the first picture of the aircraft they have seen, apart from their visit to TLS during the manufacturing process.

Its part of the airbus advanced wing program.

It isn't just the winglets. There are all new wings on the plane, along with lots of sensors and whatnot.

Thanks for your explanation. And yes, I do seem to recall that the noise stopped after reaching cruise altitude, so that could have been it. Not that it worries me, just that I find the whining sound pretty loud and very ear-piercing, if you know what I mean!

As for IFE, yes, I've had the bad luck happen on me again this year, again flying CHC-SIN, but this time on B777-212ER 9V-SVE!.. Something must have short-circuited then, as I was actually watching a movie, and my screen just turned blank all of a sudden, altho the audio was still there! Could listen to the radio, and even the movie channels etc, but just nothing from the screen. The crew tried to reset it, but was unsuccessful.

And yes, I too don't seem to recall SIA painting model numbers on their planes, except some bits during early 80s when the had "3TEN" painted on their A310-200s - but that could have been more of a nickname for the plane rather than model numbers. And BTW, SGA, SGB, etc... reminds me of their B727-212 "Hightails", as they also had the SGx regn..!

For those of you interested, the 345 will start flying in Dec to places like CGK, PEN and KUL for crew training. Might be a good chance to just get a ride on this airplane. I think this might go on till at least early nxt year.

Expect huge celebrations of some kind... including definitely a lion dance at Changi Airport on Feb 3rd. That is the inuagural flight of the SIN-LAX route.

And guess what? I'm booked on it. In Raffles Class. So it should be cool.

Will tell you guys how I fared the 16+ hour flight. Should be interesting to see what kind of flying times SQ will do when it starts the SIN-JFK run next August.

i must say that i am absolutely delighted with the concept of the "leadership". betting on convenience, not on compromise, betting on luxury, not on minimal standards, betting on comfortable connections, not on economical spoke and hub it hopefully a way to go in the future of air travel. i think it is an venturesome experiment which hopefully will pay off. the reduction of service of main carrieriers, as well as the no frills crap really calls for some counterbalancing.
