Concorde has got to be 1 of the loudest, although no more.

Probably a military aircraft of some sort--KC-135s and other 707 derivatives that haven't been reengined are pretty loud, but fighter jets can be deafening. We had lots of fighter jets patrolling over Manhattan right after 9/11, and still see them occasionally, and they always sound quite a bit louder than the usual airliners that fly over.

In terms of commercial planes--aside from the Concorde, which was in a class by itself in terms of noise!--any older jet without hushkits: 707s, 727s, 737s, etc. You can really feel a rumble when one takes off overhead--a totally different sound from today's A320s, 757s, etc.

The 777s aren't very loud at all, 747s are louder. And Concorde is A LOT louder.

No, the 777 is fairly quiet, especially considering the awesome power of its engines.

Yes, probably. You don't hear military jets every day. They might be louder than most airline planes.

@PIA777

The 777 is one of the most quiet airplanes in the world, especially given the size of the massive engines it packs. You are, once again, wrong about that one!

Hey folks, take it easy on PIA777. It's easy to get jaded, but one of the purposes of this forum is to ask questions and learn new things. Besides, it's not such a crazy leap to guess that the most powerful engines in the world might also be the loudest. I think we all sometimes forget that, at some time in our lives, no matter how long ago, each of us knew virtually nothing about aviation!

If you count it as an "aircraft," the Saturn V main stage is only slightly less loud than a nuclear explosion. It is so loud that over 1,000,000 gallons of water must be immediately dumped onto the ground floor of the launch gantry to keep the sonic overpressure from destroying the rocket and lauch environment structures.

I think that the Saturn V is a spacecraft not a aircraft, even though it does go through the air at one point.

The SR-71 came through OKC for an airshow several years back.
Absolutely the loudest engines I have ever heard.
The old 707's & DC 8's would most likely be the loudest civilian.
We get a few military training E3's touch and goes at OKC and you do not have to look out the window to tell that it is not commercial. Sure gives you an appreciation to how much quieter civilian aircraft is today.

Back in the early 80's a B-52G took off during the Paine Field Airshow and did a fly-by during the national anthem. That thing was very loud and very smoky.

The Ilyushin Il-86 is one of the loudest, that's for sure!

All RUSSIAN planes are loud!

Armenian Airline's Il-86's got banned from UK because of noise restrictions it did not meet, amongst other reasons!

Ironic, since Concorde flew in and out every day!

The Harrier is an IMMENSELY loud aircraft.

I saw one hovering at an airshow, flying back and forth and side to side, and I thought my skull was going to explode!

The loudest commercial airliners were the Convair 880/990 and Concorde SST in terms of sound footprint; next being the early JT3C and JT4A powered 707 and DC-8s. In terms of aircraft in general; the KC-135A would make your brain melt, the Convair B-36 Peacemaker at altitude would shake a shopping mall, the Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird was deafening, and last but not least the Rockwell B1B with full reheat will kick you to the curb. They all will rock your world to the n'th degree!

Too bad they are few and far between; some fully laid to rest in peace.

I don't know whether it was the all-time loudest, but the Fairey Rotodyne, with its high-pressure jets driving the rotor was considered extremely loud, even by the standards of the 50s, with its Rolls-Royce Speys and Pratt & Whitney JT-3C (J-57) turbojets!

Too bad, the Rotodyne was certainly a revolutionary aircraft.

I believe the loudest aircraft was a model of the XF-84H which was a jet fighter which mounted a propeller that actually went supersonic. The blades spun so fast they created little sonic booms. It was supposedly so loud they made people physically sick from the noise.

Well hmm...

The DC-9 is definetly up there ( aside from the concorde ). I think a DC-9 beats an F-16 in terms of noise ( LOL ).

Being that my major home airport is DTW, and i've been there many times, you know when a DC-9 departs because the ground vibrates. DC-9's make deafening sounds during takeoff. I've seen and heard TONS of those depart.

Quietist - CRJ from what i've seen at DTW ( And i've seen DC-10's, 742's, 744's, A330's, A319/320's, 757's, 763, 733/4/5/7/8/9, DC-9's, MD-82/83/88, ERJ's, Saab's, ARJ's, bunch more ) ERJ's are probably 2nd quietist. Seem's like the RJ's are quite quiet out of any aircraft.

MD-8X's are loud too, but not as loud as the DC-9's based on what i heard.

From many years of sitting and waiting on ATL's taxiways, my personal opinion is that the L-1011 was one of the loudest airplanes ever.

I can remember many times sitting there at night (in a nice size airplane like a B-767-300) parallel to the takeoff runway with about 30 airplanes ahead of us in line. Then all of the sudden you hear the loudest noise in your life, then your plane starts to shake violently and then, a few seconds later, you see an L-1011 shoot by.

I miss those days.

I experienced two B-1's perform a very low fly-by with 8 full afterburners at Oshkosh which was the loudest noise I've ever heard---and felt.

Out of the ones that i've heard i would have to rank them like this in order of loudness:

1) B1B(very very loud)
2) F-111 in FULL afterburner
3) 727 on takeoff roll/climbout at FULL power
4) DC-9 on takeoff roll/climbout FULL power
5) 707 on approach to land

The loudest air breathing aircraft flying today has to be the Tornado. It makes the F-16s flying by with afterburners seem quiet, Louder than the Concorde or B-1 by far. The F-4 was almost as loud though.

The 727 is very loud, as is the 707/DC8. Here in Saskatoon we used to get a number of F28s and they were very loud on takeoff too!!

I'd like to put my vote down for the B2 as the quietest plane, as I barely heard a sound during its fly-by at this summer's airshow.

Funny howe nobody has mentioned the VC-10, that always stuck in my mind when I was a child as the loudest (commercial) aircraft.

But inside was a different story, once flew a VC-10 from LHR-HKG, peaceful and dreamy Big grin

I can say for sure the Panavia Tornado is the loundest aircraft i have heard. Running a very close second was a F-111 C on take off at Avalon Airshow. My dad place is right on the approach to Amberely with Air Force Base, home of the aardvark. You get a nice bit of noise there sometimes during exercises.

Noisy planes for me:

F-104 Starfighter
B-1
C-141
Anything with JT8 engines (especially the early ones)

Strange sounding planes:

C-5
777 (on approach to FUK's RWY 34, they fly over Minami-Fukuoka at about 1,000 feet or less and that low whine is a noise that you can never forget. Sounds like a UFO...)

Quietest:

I would have to agree with the B-2. My grandmother lives about 100 yards to the east of the ILS approach into TCM (McChord AFB) and only about a half mile from the runway threshhold. I was outside getting ready to leave one day and I saw some movement in the corner of my eye, and yes, that was an airplane up there! If I didn't catch the movement then I might have not seen it!

loudest in this order as I have experienced all of them...

B-1B

Concorde

Harrier *HOVERING.. Horizontal flight its pretty quiet.

I guess it all matters on how close you are too? All planes are loud where I work on the Nimitz! Every year they get quieter and quieter though... I havent quite figured that out yet..?!?  Confused  Laugh out loud

I live under a flight path near YVR, and in my opinion, the Boeing 737 - 200 is the loudest. Good thing those Zip/AC 737's are going to be gone soon!

Quietest plane for me is definatly the Cessna 560 Citation Excel. On take off the plane has like a low jet engine "whistle" sound. At my home airport (ISP) planes are not allowed to take off before 6am, but the Cessna 560 is allowed to take off before 6am cause of how quiet it is.
