For military aircraft, the B1 is the loudest I have heard (although the F15 in full re-heat is pretty loud).

For commercial: Pound-for-pound would have to be the Fokker F28. Even on approach this thing made a hell of a noise.

Loudest ive seen is the B1B "Bone" - took off from Fairford this year full reheat and i was about 100 feet from the wingtip as it screamed past. Tornado is very loud, and so is the F16, (oddly enough the F15 - same GE F100 engines is far quieter) and i have to say i was amazed how loud the Gulfstreams and Lears are on takeoff - its a shirill piercing sort of noise, but its very loud. B52 is stupidly loud and runs the Bone a close second, but i heard somewhere that one of the reasons they cancelled the XB70 project was the noise - it was meant to be officially the loudest aircraft ever on takeoff.

Other loud ones. Erm...

Turkish Airforce J79 powered Phantom. Ouch.
Mirage 2000.
KC135
Eurofighter Typhoon - blimey!
F18 - two small F101's should be half a B1, but isnt!  Big grin
F117 is nasty loud but only from certain angles oddly enough.

Mig29 isnt that loud.
A10 is spooky quiet.
RR powered 777 - very quiet.
What do you mean you dont have any bourbon? Do you know how far it is to Houston? What kind of airline is this???

Out of the new generation of jets the 747-400 and the MD-11 would have to be the loudest. I saw a Swissair MD-11 takeoff once and i was actually quite surprised at how loud it was on the takeoff roll. The 747-400 has this rumble that makes the whole airport shake.

I've seen DC-9's, 727's, 737-200''s, VC-10'S, 747-100/200/300's take off from close range, but i have to say, CONCORDE was the loudest of all them all. It was absolutely mind blowingly loud!

I think that besides the 744 and m11, md82 and md90 also takes off at a very loud noise. Not sure whether it's because of the design (engines at the back) or otherthing else. Just thought it was very loudy compare with those boeings/airbus when I saw it back in the Kai Tak times....

I'd say the quietest ive ever seen was the ERJ-145 as passenger jet, and quietest military jet would be the B2 Spirit. Spooky.

Almost any aircraft that flys over us. But then again we're right next door to AF Plant 42 (PMD / KPMD), USA - California">PMD and EDW. B-1s, KC-135s, B-52s, C-141s, C-5s, F-16s, F-22s, etc.......not to mention all those sonic booms.  Nuts

Yes, probably. You don't hear military jets every day. They might be louder than most airline planes.

Try living here.  Big thumbs up

Back in the 1970s and 80s before hushkitting, I remember AC DC-9s roaring on takeoff. The CP 737s were very loud as well.

At a recent airshow, I had to cover my ears during a B1 Lancer flyby. Why weren't the B1s hushkitted?

Easy peasy.

'Arrier 'Overing.

Nine years in the RAF (6 working on the "leaping heap"), 20 in BCAL/BA. Heard 'em all.
*Nothing* beats the 'Arrier at 50ft in the hover.
And my hearing loss is testimony.

The Concorde is obviously one of the loudest. But wait, what about the military aircraft (i.e. Harrier, F-18). I once saw at the St. Louis Air Show a Harrier hovering over the Mississippi River, and it was ear-splittingly loud! That thing let out the greatest roar I had ever heard come from an airplane! Of course, the Concorde may be louder. I always figured the Concorde was one of the loudest, since it uses turbojets, but I unfortunately never heard one before, even though I saw one at London-Heathrow parked and another parked at JFK, both for British Airways. Here is my one question...Why the hell did they ship it instead of fly it across the Atlantic...Absolutely ridiculous. I would also think that the DC-9 is up there on the loud map, along with the water-wagon Boeing 707. And the Boeing 747 is pretty loud, too. But the Boeing 777 is one of the quietest of the giant jetliners. It's true.

I've heard Harriers hovering and F4 Phantoms at the same airshow and I can tell you that the F4 is much louder. Other ear piercing experiences have been...while rowing in the lake next to MIA in the early 80's, we had an old 707 take off very low from rwy 12. All 8 of us let go of our oars simultaneously just to cover our ears from the noise. In the early 90's, we were playing a softball game early Sunday morning. Our softball team comprised of guys in their early 20's so we were all playing with a hangover when a BA Concorde took off over us. WHAT AN EAR AND BRAIN SPLITTING PAIN!!! That was the last time I saw a Concorde in flight though!!

Anyone ever been to the little viewing stand on the side of SXM opposite the terminal. I think it might be exclusive to residents of the small condo complex that borders the airport. Anyway, standing there you get a big surprise when any large jet aircraft, like AF 743 comes in quietly to land, then throttles up reverse. I nearly fell over, being about 500 ft. away from those engines.

The ALM MD-80 departing at about 7 AM was also a treat for those of us trying to sleep in.  Yeah sure

I am sure there are louder like military jets and all, but one of my experiences that I still remember from many years back was sitting at the end of runway 14R at Chicago O'Hare while watching planes takeof 32L. It was a VERY hot and humid day and I start to see this thick black smoke trail and the nose of a 727 pop up over the bushes. The aircraft was very low and must have been at full throttle considering the conditions. Well it was LOUD, and I have it on video. I laugh everytime I watch the video because I hear myself say HOLY F*@K after it passes over.

I have heard a Harrier hover at Oshkosh before and it is probably the loudest aircraft I have heard to date. I was probably about half a mile away and it still hurt my ears.

I remember reading in the little leaflet that came with my Walkman that a jet engine at ten feet (doesn't specify which type, I assume it's at full throttle) is about 140 dB, and the Space Shuttle blasting off at ten feet (who'd get that close?) is around 180!

The 727 is very loud. I flew it from ALC to MAD and the flight was quite uncomfortable because of the noise. Maybe the Concorde was the loudest, but it was a really fast plane.

How about the DC-9. Of course the concorde is much louder, but my goodness, for such a small plane, those engines make a TON of noise! I've been standing on the ground at DCA many times, and the DC-9s are always the loudest b/c they use up the most runway, and are the oldest planes serving DCA.... even the 757's that land there are much quieter.

Gotta take my sound measuring equipment to the airport, I normally use it when sound-engineering...could prove something maybe...

I go with Bekol, MD82 is not bad for this topic.

Actually I think, the looks and the noise in combination make the feeled loudness, like a "small" MD82 taking off in a roar, compared to that, in size, the 747 would have to make more noise...

I know that fighters are pretty loud, they make quite some flights around here...we even had two, I think F15, crash near town...

In "Normal" aircrafts, like commercial and transport (including military) I would actually suggest the C-5, she didn't come up so far, at least didn't see her in this thread so far...

I really do not like the Airbus-sound...it's just strange, I don't know...

Concorde is certainly one of the loudest Civil jetliners ever built, but NOT THE loudest...
Here's some results of the noise measure, made in the 70's :

The noise is measured at 1,85km in the axis of the runway threshold :

On Approach :

Concorde : 115db
DC8-50 : 117db
B707-320b : 120db

On Take-Off :

Concorde : 114db
B707-320b : 114db
DC8-50 : 115db
Convair 990 : 120db

Lateral :

measured at 650m on the side, from the axis of the runway

DC8-50 : 106db
B707-320b : 108db
Concorde : 111db
VC10 : 118db

Id say most older jetliners (DC-8s, 707s, 727s, BAc111s, etc etc) would be fairly loud, I know an old 727 on a heavy takeoff is quite noisy...
But i agree some military aircrafts are fairly loud too eh...

The Space Shuttle, like the Saturn V, doesn't belong in this comparison. The Space Shuttle is NOT an aircraft; its' wings are there only to facilitate its' final descent through the lower atmosphere and to guide it onto a runway. The Harrier is indeed exceedingly loud, heard one in a demo at the Dayton Air Show this year but I must say, the F/A-18E Super Hornet had it beat, easily the loudest airplane I've heard. Probably though, the Concorde, SR-71A and B1-B on full afterburner would handily beat that.

Sometimes, In a 717, it is so overpowered, the pilot can use "Approach" Thrust for takeoff. A Captain/Safety Investigator/Instructor told me this. He personally has never done this because AirTran does not permit it, but he said it is possible to take off on approach thrust.

Well, speaking from someone who is a base rat and has grown up around military aircraft, I can say that the AB-8B Harrier is damn loud. Also, the F-16 with the burner kicked up has a pretty good sound pattern. You'd be surprised at the noise un-hushed JT8D-9A's can make. Here at NXX, I'm around those good 'ole C-9's all the time and can honestly say that she sounds like an F-18 roaring down the runway with full burners---it's so loud that the sound crackles.

FLYSSC,

Thank you for providing some REAL numbers to this conversation. What is your source? This should be a cut and dry issue.

My guess for the loudest airbeathing aircraft would be the TU-160. That's just a guess though....It's significantly bigger than the B-1, but it's only conjecture on my part....

airliners: I'm going to peg one of those old Convair jets , 990?

military: officially either X-15 (with its rocket engine) or XB-70 with its 6-afterburners

military unofficial: Aurora, hands down, that thing has got a 4 pulse detonation engines for God's sake!

SLCPilot,

Sources : Archives documents about a comparaison study made for the "Concorde Trial" in early 70's, when the authorities of New York Airport were refusing access to JFK for Concorde, pretending it was too noisy.

The good old RAF aircraft are incredible loud. The 9 years i spent in Brunei we had alot of visits of RAF VC-10s and Nimrods and the noise was just explosive, best sounds in the world i reckon. My house was just near the runway and on take off the windows and house would shake from the noise of the aircraft

Iv'e heard all kinds of loud aircraft, Concorde, B1, Nimrod, Harrier, F-15, U2, F4 Phantom, etc. But the one that stands out in my mind as the loudest, were the old KC-135's with water injection. On a takeoff roll with a full load of fuel, they wouldn't rotate until well down 12,000ft runway and they were moving at a much higher rate speed than any commercial airliner would be. The heavy black exhaust trails were almost as impressive.

Excluding military aircraft, I would say weight-for-age the BAC1-11 has got to be up there. Air Malawi had some un-hushkitted examples and when they took off it sounded like a Saturn V rocket falling down stairs - unbelievable. An a very shady outfit called Affretair used to operate a particularly villainous DC-8 freighter into JNB that looked AND sounded like a Saturn V - noisy enough to rattle windows in Lesotho and smoke that would gladden Red Adairs heart ! It used to sit on the tarmac out by cargo and ooze oil and other unsavoury fluids onto the tarmac. Ah, sanction busting - can you beat it ?

I would hazzard a guess, its some form of a millitary aircraft.
Shortly after 9/11, i was in the DC/MD area when i heard the most frightening noise I had EVER heard.
I never did get a view of the aircraft, but I certainly felt in a post 9/11 world, this might be the "BIG ONE"!
Then i remembered where I was.

You guys haven't been around long enough. Loudest was a Canadair North Star -- a re-designed DC-4 with four Merlins instead of the Pratts. Was often described on take-off as louder than "a squadron of Mustangs scrambling." Upside was that it cruised 50 mph faster than the Pratt-powered versions everyone else used.

Noise levels inside were so bad that Trans Canada Airlines got Canadair to re-design the exhaust system so that the stacks on the inboard side of the nacelle were redirected through a cross-over pipe and vented on the outboard side. Bizarre, but it helped a little.

Took my first flight on one of these. Still don't hear very well.

Never let the facts get in the way of a good story.

Wasn't one of the complaints about the TU-144 the fact that it was the loudest commercial aircraft ever built?

I do agree with the idea that many military aircraft are extremely loud and annoying. Im Switzerland, I lived next to a Swiss air force base at Matten and worked the night shift at a large hotel. I had big rings under my eyes and looked like a raccoon for a while - they flew Starfighters in and out of that airport every day as I was trying to sleep, and those were bar none, the loudest thing I have ever had to hear and feel on a regular basis. Thank heavens for Oropax!

Non after burner aircraft would have to be the T-37 Air Force TRainer. KNow to have 140+ decibles at idle!

The B1-B would get my vote for loudest overall.

The older military jets are surely louder than the newer ones, such as the F-14 and F-16. I have seen a Hawker Hunter scream by and an A-4 Skyhawk do a touch-and-go. They are the loudest planes I have experienced.

Regarding the Fairey Rotodyne I mentioned earlier, the type was banned in the 1950s because of the noise; remember, this is the time of the Hunter and the Skyhawk!

Without a doubt most miliary jets in afterburner format are louder than any civil aircraft, eg B1 Bomber, F-111. Even F18, F16 and the old SR71 are louder than the 747/777/A340 for example. One only has to have gone to an airshow to see both civil and military aircraft in a flypast.

PIA-- I think he is right about the T-37...Some call it the "Converter"....turns fuel into noise. It is one of those airplanes that can make you physically ill just because of its noise level.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned the Hawker Siddeley Trident, especially rhe 3B variant. It was significantly louder than the BAC 1-11, being powered by three (rather than two Speys) plus the RB162 booster jet.

Military wise, the loudest I've heard are the SR-71, the TU-160, the B-1B and J57 engined KC-135s. I would imagine that the North American XB-70 Valkyie must have been truly loud but not many of us ever got to see or hear one in the flesh.

Prop wise, the RR Dart made a terrific racket so aircraft with four of them (Viscount and Argosy) must rank as the noisiest civilian turboprops. Having said that, I've never seen or heard a TU-114 which was the biggest civilian turboprop.
