"KNow to have 140+ decibles at idle!"

I donno about that. The first atomic bomb was measured to 180DdB at I think 5 miles, I know I'm wrong it has been a while since I saw the data.

Yeah, I think my vote would have to go with the XB-70... anyone who has ever seen one of those (at the USAF museum, for example) knows that the engines on that thing are pretty large, and there are 6 of them, all afterburning... that has to be hazardously loud on t/o, since the B1B, with 4 afterburners, all being smaller and newer, is loud enough to make one wet themself if they are nearby at full throttle/burners on.

When NASA's B720 takes off from Hopkins, I can hear it plainly from my house 12 miles away. It still has the old engines, so it's very loud.

How about Tu-134? They convert fuel to noise. Also the Mig-23 is ear-shattering. I would guess Tu-104 and Tu-124 would be very loud considering their old turbojet engines. Basic model Il-62s with NK-8 engines are very loud. NK-8 has been considered as one of the most loud engines made.

These old Russian aircraft are only loud in camparison to more modern types. In their heyday they would not have been considered an awful lot different to their western counterparts.

Of the ones that I have seen - the Harrier hovering takes a huge cake !!

Commercial aircraft - I'd rank the B707 and DC8s with the early turbojet engines and the Concorde as the loudest I've heard.

How about the 747-400, i was at JFK about to get into the car and i saw this Saudi Arabian 747-400 or 300 takeing off. MAN was that thing loud, it shook the car. I could actually feel the engines power when I heard them. VERY VERY LOUD, and i was about 400 yards away from it. The most critical part of the flight is take-off.

i would think you would have to specify, between noise in db or sone and most annoying sound.

i am sure that both awards go to military planes. considering early civil jetliners(who were of course alot louder then todays jets) all used deriverates of military engines, i'd take a wild guess that there is simply no civil airliner who could hold that record.
one of the most painful sounds is the extreme amount of noise created by afterburners etc on certain military engines. they do not only sound annoying but are also so loud that it actually hurts.
also the an225 is a very quiet plane, however it has a distinctive houl to it, just like the an124. they are both stage4 certified as far as i know. i see alot of military heavy at eddk. by far the noisiest are the il-76. you can always tell if one is around, even if you got the stereo up.
on the other hand i have sometimes seen an an225 at about 2000ft while watching tv without having heard it as it had passed my place a minute before.

my guesses are (of those i have personall experienced):
tornado full ab takeoff
and i would guess without having seen it for most annoying sound:
those late prop bombers, hearing their engines for 12 hours or so must have been crazy. b36 comes to my mind there
10=2

The loudest military plane would be the U-2 or B-1.

For pax, it's gotta be the Concorde, DC-9, 707, or B732.

I would agree with the Harrier in hover being quite "vocal"! Saw it at airshows in FL at various times...

A B-1 doing a climbout with full afterburners is also on the noisy side...gives you a real feeling of USAF power...

However, also recall seeing the Blue Angels many years ago when they used A-4's and was sitting under flight path at end of runway on adjacent property...when the whole group came by, THAT was definitely NOISY!

Any idea how noisy the A-6 was? If memory serves it used two of the same J-52s that the Skyhawk used.

Here is some data according from the FAA's commercial jet aircraft noise ombudsman (http://www.aee.faa.gov/noise/AC_36-1H.htm). I have ignored duplicate entries (i.e. 747-200 with every engine combination) and business jets. Looks like Concorde takes the cake!

The five loudest commercial airplanes are:

Takeoff / Flyover:
1 - Aerospatiale / BAe Concorde (119.5 EPNdB)
2 - Boeing 747-200 (110.0 EPNdB)
3 - Antonov AN-124 (109.9 EPNdB)
4 - Ilyushin IL-86 (109.2 EPNdB)
5 - Boeing 747-100 (108.4 EPNdB)

Sideline:
1 - Aerospatiale / BAe Concorde (112 EPNdB)
2 - Boeing 727-200 (104.7 EPNdB)
3 - Boeing 737-200Adv (104.4 EPNdB)
4 - Ilyushin IL-86 (104.2 EPNdB)
5 - Douglas DC-9-30 (103.7 EPNdB)

Approach:
1 - Aerospatiale / BAe Concorde (117 EPNdB)
2 - Ilyushin IL-76TD (108.9 EPNdB)
3 - Douglas DC-8-63 (108.5 EPNdB)
4 - Boeing 707-300B (108.3 EPNdB)
5 - Antonov AN-124 (108.2 EPNdB)

The five quietest commercial airplanes are:

Takeoff / Flyover:
1 - Fairchild-Dornier 328JET-300 (76.1 EPNdB)
2 - McDonnell Douglas MD-90-30 (77.2 EPNdB)
3 - Embraer EMB-135ER/145ER (77.9 EPNdB)
4 - Boeing 717-200 (78.1 EPNdB)
5 - Airbus A319 (78.5 EPNdB)

Sideline:
1 - Bombardier CRJ-200 (82.2 EPNdB)
2 - Embraer EMB-135ER/145ER (84.4 EPNdB)
3 - Yakolev YAK-40 (85.5 EPNdB)
4 - British Aerospace BAe 146-200A (86.6 EPNdB)
5 - Boeing 737-500 (88.2 EPNdB)

Approach:
1 - Fokker F70 (88.3 EPNdB)
2 - Fairchild-Dornier 328JET-300 (91.1 EPNdB)
3 - Boeing 717-200 (91.3 EPNdB)
4 - McDonnell Douglas MD-90-30 (91.7 EPNdB)
5 - Bombardier CRJ-200 (92.1 EPNdB)

I have to agree with the one(s) saying the Tornado.

Played golf in Scotland a few years back and a Tornado passed right over me at about a 1000 feet going pretty fast. (Didn't know much about aviation then, but it was probably going somewhere around 250 or 300 kts) It was incredibly loud!!

Starrion had it right about the XF-84H supersonic turboprop project.

Each of the three propeller blades generated a continuous sonic boom at higher power settings. During the first full power ground tests, everyone within a couple hundred yards of the aircraft grew physically ill from the noise (And these were people wearing full hearing protection).

For production military aircraft, I think that the B-58 Hustler at full afterburner was the loudest.

Commercial Aircraft:
I have never heard any of the first generation jetliners(Comet, B707, DC8, Tu104) unmuffled, but they must have been incredibly noisy.
In the next generation, anything with the RR Spey engine quickly converted Jet-A into noise (and smoke). See (and hear) Trident, BAC111, G-II, G-III.
The Concorde was in a class by itself.

Well I classify my "loud" planes like this. If the engine is thin and long and looks like a tube or "sausage" it's fairly loud. If it's short and fat and has a big diameter it's quiet. I would love to hear any first generation jet. Anyone have any sound clips?

I loved KEESJE's picture of the B-58 above!

The Convair 880 was notoriously loud, and the afterburning military version on the Hustler would be ear shattering!

i would say

1 VULCAN
2 B1 B
3 Tornado
4 Euro fighter
5 F16 and Saab Gripen
6 Concorde
7 F15
8 French Mirage

Back in the fifties thier was an experiment to create a faster propeller plane. I recall WINGS had a show about it. in the end they couldn't get it much faster than conventional propeller planes and jets had already broken the sound barrier.

I upshot of the experimentation was that the propeller was the loudest plane ever built. Ground crews had to be competly insultated from the noise but even at ide the propeller tips were going faster than sound the multiple shock waves made many people sick just standing near this plane as it taxied.

I'm searching the web for its name and a picture, maybe someone would know it.

i agree on the Russian planes being loud, a few come into Edinburgh each month, and i work in an office Just inside the outermarket, and the Russians ones always gets me running to the window, quite loud for Edi's standard, but concorde, thats in a league of its own for noise.

I don't know exactly which aircraft is the loudest, but it HAS to be something propelled by those Rolls-Royce Darts.

The Dart is a little engine, produces a ridiuculous amount of power by today' standard, but makes a ear-splitting, teeth cracking, grinding sound that I just can't stand, especially if you look at one from the front.

Those early turbines really dedicated a fair percentage of their thermodynamic power to making noise...

A few honorable mentions:

Gulfstream 3.
We had one based with us at DCA (before they banned all non-commercial aircraft: Thanks Al Quida!) that regularly flew to Germany. With a MGW takeoff on a somewhat short runway (6869 Ft), the roar of those Spey engines would shake the ground and rattle the windows in the main terminal.

Mitsubishi MU-2.
The noise of the Garrett turboprops on the MU2 can cut right through your hearing protection. You can't escape it. The props are loud, the fan/compressor is loud, and the exhaust is loud. You always know when one is running anywhere on the ramp.

Lear Jet 24/25.
GE CJ610 TURBOJETS. What do you expect. The noise reverberates around the airport for several minutes after the aircraft is gone. Real simple range profile, 3 hours and you are coming down, whether you want to or not.

Rockwell B-1B.
I was fueling a Continental B733 at DAB during the annual airshow in 1989. A B-1B made a high speed pass in afterburner and the sudden LOUD noise knocked me off my ladder and sent my paperwork flying. Sneaky aircraft.

Just asked my dad...he's seen a live Tu-144 take off from Sofia airport in the early 1970s when it was on a tour in eastern Europe. He said it was like taking 2-3 Tu-134s and combining the noise...like a very loud roar. NK-144s at full power...impressive.

Heres the deal the loadest airplanes in the world are the fastest props in the world. The TU-95 Bear, and the XF-84H, The Bear of course was the only one in production, but both are the loadest for the same reasons. the turboprop is spinning at such a high rpm that the tips are breaking the speed of sound. This causes multiple if not almost constant sonic booms in addition to engine noise. As I said in my previous post the XF-84 was so noisy that ground crews got phyically ill working near the plane after engine start.

Scroll down this link for a picture of a XF-84H:
http://www.eaa1000.av.org/ppolice/clconf/clconf.htm
http://www.wpafb.af.mil/museum/annex/an48.htm
I'm sure you've all see a Bear. But another article suggested that fighters had to rely on afterburner to catch up to an excellerating Bear. It was a fast sucker.

What about the Tupolev TU-134? Has anyone ever heard the screaming racket they make on departure? You're lucky if everything around you doesn't shake and rattle as the 68 seat Russian Jetliner thunders away like an overloaded skoda throwing out huge amounts of smoke in its wake.

Washfan- I have to agree with you on your comments about each one of those aircraft.

loudest Commercial- (for me)
732
727
742
DC-10
DC-9
DC-8

Loudest Military-
B-1B
AV-8B Harrier.
ect......

quietist-
F100
A319
777

osssn a personal note about the MD-11....i hear the Swiss/Eva/LH/FedEx MD-11's take off almost everyday and i really dont think there that loud. Being as new as they are they are pretty loud but nothing really to much more then a 767.

Widely used commercial passenger aircraft, maybe the 737-200 ranks up there as amongst the loudest?

Evening take off from PNQ for DEL, civil operations from the Air Force base at Lohegaon/Pune, the 20-year and plus old Alliance Air B-737-200 with aircraft serial numbers going way back, 22281 for example is VT-EGE, had to usually climb rapidly, turn hard at the same time and clear the mountains to try to get ATC-BOM for the "short route" straight to Jaipur for a faster gethome. Nobody pretty much cares about noise regulations and with a full passenger cum cargo load, that is loud.

Improved load factors amongst other things brought in A-320, which sort of whisper through the evening, gently.

i would say

my first vote the F-18 especially when they come 50 feet over your head at 1000 miles per hour!
my second vote the concorde no need to explain
and my third vote the MD-11 i was in Puerto Rico about a year ago and i was standing in the spotting building and an Martianir MD-11 come by and takes off it nearly blew my ear drums out!!!!

Stormy321 - That's why the Tu-134 is my favorite plane. The Tu-134A's and B's we see now have quieter engines than the original Tu-134. Never got the chance to hear an original "no-letter" Tu-134 but they must've been even louder. Also the Tu-134's reverse thrust is heard miles away..

I had an F14 fly over me one time and I thought it was an earthquake. It was LOUD.
On the flip side of the coin, back in the 70's the DC10 was introduced as the Whisper Jumbo or Giant. The DC10 was very quiet, esp. compared with smaller DC9's, 732's and 727's (before hush kits)

I've heard both the Concorde and the Harrier on the same day at Oshkosh, and the Harrier (in hover) is louder than the Concorde with reheat.

That being said, the B-1B may be the loudest today as far as lower frequencies go (such as the kind that will shake you off a ladder), but the Harrier is probably still the loudest in the higher frequency range that humans hear better. I'm 30% deaf and the Harrier was still painfully loud (half a mile away to boot).

Read a recent account in Air and Space Magazine that at altitude American interceptors couldn't get too close to Tu-95s because the noise was so loud....even at 30,000 feet. Obviously because the prop tips were supersonic. That's not that rare of an occurance, actually, and many of the louder prop planes you'll hear have their props tips getting closer to the speed of sound. Very few regularly actually exceed it, because it's not efficient. A good example would be the very quiet Saab 2000, which efficiently and leisurely turns its props at 2000 rpm.

Notice how quiet the 717 and MD-90 are. And remember that even once the venerable 727 prototype impressed congressmen and local officials during a demonstration to allow it to be operated out of LaGuardia. We've become much more discriminating about noise since then.
