Finnair Adds 6th MD-11!
Finnair is adding a 6th MD-11 aircraft to its fleet as of spring 2004. The new aircraft will be OH-LGE's sistership (which is the newest addition to Finnair's long haul fleet). As of the summer timetable flights to Beijing from Helsinki will become daily, also more flights to Japan and Shanghai are planned.

The aircraft will be registered as OH-LGF, I suppose the current registration is P4-BDL (ex. OO-CTB) so it would be another ex-CityBird a/c.

It seems that Finnair is the only airline adding MD-11's, most of the other airlines are getting rid of their MD-11's.

When are they going to replace their fleet of MD 11s with B 772ERs or A 345s or A 343s?

The MD-11s will stay in the fleet for a few more years simply because the leasing contracts are very favourable for the airline at the moment (I think) and the fact that the MD-11 suits Finnair's needs extremely well in terms of passenger/cargo capacity. There are already some speculations about the following a/c type, I suppose the final decision will be made in 1-2 years time.

AY will keep their M-11s until 2008. They want to revamp J class but this might be uneconomic as it takes 2 years to pilot a Lie-flat seat. AY also has the issue of replacing the M-11. The feeling is that the 777 is the right aircraft but the airline has gone for an airbus fleet. AY makes a lot of money on air freight and the A330 line does not give them the lift that they would get from either a 777 or MD-11.

Varig are adding MD-11s. They were supposed to be replacing them with B777, but due to the economic situation in Brazil they are taking out more MD-11s. They are due to aquire 'at least 3' MD-11s from Swiss (who are replacing theirs with A340s), this is because they returned 3 of their MD-11s to GECAS, who are converting them to frieghters for Lufthansa Cargo.

It is indeed good news to hear Finnair & Varig adding more PASSENGER MD-11s. This aircraft has taken a bum rap for far too long, IMO. Besides that, why should Finnair & Varig be in a hurry to replace it with 777s & 340s? If the MD-11 can still fly from point A to point B, carrying paxs & cargo just as well and still earn money for the airlines in question...more power to them! Long live the MD-11!

This looks like the first MD-11 for Finnair that would be acquired used. I flew their MD-11s twice transatlantic, a good plane.

Actually, the first reason for diminished MD11 sales (as stated earlier on this forum) is the initial range shortfall against what McDD promised. This was successfully addressed in phases and the MD11 did meet it's initial promises a few years later. By that time however, the second reason for the end of MD11 production was the introduction of later aircraft such as the A340 which gave a "family" advantage over the McDD product and the 777 which is just flat out superior to anything else in it's class (hence it's higher price).

Finnair's choice makes a lot of sense......Finnair was a long-time DC10 user and was one of the first (or the first?) airline to put the MD11 into service and seems pleased with the type; so why not acquire additional MD11s to expand service? I am sure that they got a great financial deal on their 5th and now 6th MD11s, which were previously operated by Citybird and are among the newest passenger MD11s around. The Citybird MD11s were built on a white-tail basis (ie, no customer order) towards the end of the MD11 production run and, over the years, have probably spent more time on the ground in storage than in service!
Of course, at some point, Finnair will get around to ordering a replacement for the type...as mentioned above, the rumor is that Finnair thinks that the 777 would be the right choice but they may go with Airbus due to their A32X narrow-body fleet....either "advanced" 343s or 346s - we shall see. But what is the rush, the MD11s have a lot of flying years left and are well-suited for Finnair's intercontinental route system.

Then there was, of course, the tendency to flip uncontrollably out of the sky on finals.
FedEx and Mandarin both have turned a few into lawn darts.
Too small a stabilizer and the balancing software didn't work right.

Glad to see another airline adding MD-11 to its fleet. These birds cannot be forgotten... Of course I wish Varig could replace its whole fleet, but as already said, due to the economic situation it isn't possible. So is good to see another airline adding MD-11s and I hope to see it flying for a long time.
BTW, MD-11 in Finnair's livery looks great...

Gigneil - the Fedex accident was ruled pilot error (improper landing technique) and the Mandarin one was an attempt to land in a tropical storm.

I saw the movie Castaway, it didnt look like pilot error to me.
The plane in Castaway was an airbus. In my opinion, there is a huge difference between A310 and MD-11. How about counting the number of engines?

Is there an Aruban leasing company that owns this aircraft? Why was it registered P4-BDL? There are a bunch of private aircraft and VIP aircraft with a P4- registration....is this like registering your cruise ship in Liberia or is there a leasing company in the Netherland Antilles?

Why are you commenting on the movie "Castaway"???? It has nothing to do with the FedEx "incident" at Newark which ended belly up on the lawn between the tarmacs and a burnt up MD-11..

Look at the scene when the aircraft was in the water. There is an engine on the tail of that aircraft.

They showed a FedEx A300 on the ground. It looked like he was going to board the A300. In the crash scene, that is an MD-11. There are winglets on the wings (not like the A300's smaller ones), and a tail mounted engine. Now, its still kind of hard to tell if you dont know your aircraft real well (am I refering to you? ) So, to make it easier for anyone who cannot identify the aircraft type, if you own the DVD, insert Disk 2 into your standard DVD player, goto the Special effects Vignettes (ugghh, is Vignettes french?!)
Go down to the Plane crash.. and watch it.. That is an MD-11.
