In all sincerity, why did they design it so skinny? Maybe its just the picture, but it doesn't look much wider than an A320 or a 757... 3-3 abreast. Anyone know why?

757KSLC, it is the camera angle of the shot, it looks small because the genius that took this shot probably zoomed in for an effect.

Can anyone tell me how to include pics that are not in the database?

I think that maybe the cockpit does not look very wide because of the way the picture is taken. One has to notice that what we see on the upper part of the picture is not the fuselage, it really is the forefront of the plane!

the parts will mostly be done shipping to toulouse in early summer 04 and then used in final assembly of behemoth1. i think you will see it rather complete in autumn 04 and maybe even complete around then if the engines are done in time.

Have a look at the 1st pic Aloha717200 posted.
There are three people standing behind the red railings on the 4th floor of the factory, but it gives the illusion that the rail is on the first passenger floor of the aircraft cross section.

that is, it looks as though the people are standing on the first pax floor of the A380.
To take this a bit further, if we assume the average height of those people to be say, 5'10", I calculated the top to bottom height of the fuselage to be 70 feet or the height of a 7 storey building.

Ok, so I had 15 minutes to spare haha.

a bit of a side question.

Why does the A380 not have an emergency exit on top of the cockpit like the B747?

Are they going to use the windows for this purpose?

If this is the first REAL aircraft (not an engineering mockup) it seems like they are way ahead of schedule.
They may have this thing done in record time.

This is the real thing. No doubt. When the a380 was launched, it had been in the pipe for quite a while. Somehow, a lot of people think it is still a paper airplane.

The fuselage cross section of the A380 looks bigger, at least in those pictures, than the standard Airbus widebody width. How many passengers will they be able to sit across in economy? I saw a drawing that showed 2-4-2 in the lower deck and 2-2-2 in the upper. Is this correct?

Its much wider than the A330/340.
If you look at the cabinlayout presented on airbus.com lower deck will have a 10 (3+4+3) abrest layout and upper deck will have 8 (2+4+2).

Thanks, Sk945, looks like it's going to be as wide as the 747 on the main deck and as wide as the A330/A340 across the upper deck.

They are giving capacity as 555 with a 3 class configuration. Can you imagine how many it will carry in a full economy configuration? Something in the 650 to 800 pax range, I would guess, depending on pitch. It's gonna be a big beast!

From these pictures it looks like the side panels on the upper deck will curve inward significantly, sort of like on the upper deck of the 747. Does anyone know if, as a result, there will be similar storage bins between the seats and the windows? Otherwise there wouldn't be much room in the overhead bins. Some people don't like them, but I find the side compartments on the 747 to be very convenient.

Its the width of an A330 bolted on top of a 747.

The bottom deck can comfortably seat 3-5-3, although nobody will.

The top deck is 2-4-2.

Any arguments that the plane is too skinny are not based in fact. It will be about a foot and some wider than a 747.

I think part of the illusion is that the windows on the A380 cross the entire front and even the sides. The same cannot be said for the 777. That's what I saw first!

I'm not convinced the image shows the cockpit of the first A380. Maybe the photographer tilted his camera but keep in mind that the cockpit is halfway between the two passenger decks. Looking at the picture, there is hardly enough room for the upper floor. Furthermore, the nose looks like a usual nose without radome. But there shouldn't be the radome but rather the lower passenger floor.

I couldn't find the picture at airbus.com but I think the newspaper just picked the wrong picture. It's business as usual, isn't it?

Yep the A380 fusalage section looks huge. Lets hope it dosn't end up another spruce goose when it comes to the flying part though(no airbus flaming intended...I love airbus..boeing too.)

What do you think the yellow "hump" is behind the cockpit? The extereme angle of the picture is playing tricks on you.

This is willing first flight in 2005 and goes on the Paris Air Show and which one will be deliveries in 2006. This is exactly still I know alot about of A380 aircraft and you probably will see it in the future and I'm looking forward to see.

Qantas will be configuring the flight 3-4-3 in the lower deck and 2-4-2 in upper deck, however business class will be on upper deck in a 2-2-2 format whilst first class on the bottom deck will be configured 1-2-1 . Total pax configuration will be 515 (22/98/395) in 3 class format this compares with QF new 744 configuration of 14/60/278.
Of course this will most likely change due to the fact QF hasn't officially informed Airbus of it's configuration plans.

Remember that Airbus has designed the A380 with manourvering the aircraft around at various airports in mind & tight taxiways.
Boeing had to fit 3 cameras in various positions on the 773 so that the pilot could see if he was right on track.

Then, as mentioned previously, the fuselage looks comparatively narrow and the distance from the cockpit to the radome is too short. Where is the lower passenger deck supposed to be?

I know a picture can play tricks on you, but no, I don't think this is an A380.

If we take the flightdeck windows as refference, the radome is going to be in front of it, but does anyone know what will be in space or "hump" behind and above the flightdeck?..........is there space available there to use it for some type of passenger seating or maybe a galley?.......navigation computers?......I can't seem to find a diagram that has this information.

It's an extreme wide angle shot... Duh. Do you know anything about photography and perspective? If you have further doubts, the cockpit windows are in a classic airbus style, but they do not match the A32X or A330/40/10/00. Since you clearly cannot recognize an A380 part, perhaps you can tell us what aircraft this is?
