Spanair To Take A Stake In SAS?

Just read this on CNN (that annoying news-bar at the bottom of the screen): two "officials" from Spanair have said that Spanair is planning on taking a "significant stake" in SAS...

I thought that Spanair is, to a significant part, owned by SAS!?!

Anyone know more about this?

Think it is the other way around. Just read on www.boarding.no (Norwegian web travel news) that SAS and Lufthansa are planning to use Spanair to break Iberias near monopoly on the South Atlantic routes out of Europe. Since Spanair at present does not operate anything bigger than A321's. "help" from SAS or Lufthansa with Equipement is expected..... possibly even new orders as Spanair has just published quite a good profit for the first 3 quarters of 2003.

That's actually what I was thinking as well... but I've read the message again by now...

Although, the way it was written, it could also be interpreted as specifically these two executives of Spanair planning to buy a part of SAS - but somehow I don't think that this sounds any more likely than the other way of reading it...

If I see it again, I'll try to put it in here exactly how they're broadcasting it...

Spanair operated a route to New York with 767 equipment.They suspended it after 9/11 though.Would be nice to try out their intercontinental service if they start up again!

They also flew to GRU for a while - and I think also to EZE, but that might have been a connection through GRU... unfortunately they had a 2-4-2 config on their 767s...

Yup you are right..... just did a search.

Danish Reuters reports that two Spanair exec's plans to discretely buy a significant stake in SAS in January...... discretely..... so how come they held a press conference???? Very strange, don't think any of the 3 governments shares are up for sale, so who's shares?????

Since SAS nearly ownes a 100% of Spanair, didn't they have to suspend operation NON EU routes as the company is majority non Spanish owned etc and North American traffic rights can no longer be used as the company is majority non spanish?

Any thoughts?

The media is a bit misleading. What's happening is SAS is increasing its stake in Spanair to around 95% doing so by buying the shares from the Spanair chairman and another executive. In turn, the two chairman and executive of Spanair are going to increase their investment in SAS shares. So, SAS will be the dominate owner and the Spanair executives are going to be intimately involved in SAS due to their ownership of a significant amount of stock.

Gotta' love the business world.

Saw this weekend that SAS have three parked 767-386ER parked at CPH. Maybe Spanair could start intercontinental flights with them.

Weird, JK is 94,5% controlled by SK, although they might re-launch transatlantic service in cooperation with SK and LH.

No, the flight was MAD-IAD codeshare with UA. They also served MAD-EZE, and MAD-GRU, al using 763s.

The 763s parked are supposed to be leased to MX, which received the first this week.

Yes, MX is quitting Star Alliance, but they are already leasing the planes.
LN-RCG has been re-registered as XA-MXB and will start non-stop LAX-MX), Mexico">MEX-EZE on Dec. 15.
