From watching aircraft fly overhead at 4000' going into Heathrow I would say the A340-600, A330 2nd and 777 3rd.

When Reno-Air was still around, at least two of their MD-90's (N901RA and N902RA) had a special "Orange County Flyer" title added to their standard livery. Being that SNA has got to be one of the top noise sensitive airports in the world, I thought it was a clever jab at the airport as well as a great marketing tool for the ultra-quiet MD-90. Happily at YX we are phasing out our ultra-loud DC9-10 and -30 aircraft with B717s. You can be rampside with these aircraft and basically not even need hearing protection. Our commuter Midwest Connect's fleet of 328Jet aircraft are extremely quiet on takeoff and landing. Engine start-up is another story for the 328....as XJRamper has already pointed out.

When the B757-200 lands at WLG and I'm at College which is about 400 metres from WLG in Strathmore I don't even know that it has landed cause it is that quiet but when all the other planes land, even the Beech 1900D I can hear them really well. So for me the B752 is the quietest

From a passenger's standpoint, I was extremely surprised how quiet the 727 was the last time I was on one in 2002.

As for the exterior, I'd vote for the ERJ-145...I've never heard a 717 in person, though.

FOR THE LUCKY PASSENGERS, MOST AIRLINERS WITH ENGINES IN THE REAR ARE/WERE VERY QUIET : VC-10s, CARAVELLES, 1-11s, DC-9s, MD-80s, ALL JET FOKKERS and so on.

FOR AIRPORT NEIGHBOURS: THE BAe 146 AND LATE DEVELOPMENTS, EMB 145s AS WELL AS P&W POWERED TURBOPROPS : ATRs, F-50s, SAAB 340/2000, EMB 120, DASH 8s, DASH 7s.

I'll have to chime in and say the FRJ's pretty darn quiet...quieter than the CRJs I've been on at least.

Thanks, all of you. You have informed me of some jets I didn't know about before, and I will certainly keep this in mind. As a St. Louisan, I had the pleasure of listening to the TWA 717s quite often. I was quite surprised to hear they were among the quietest airliners in the world. I always thought the 757 was one of the quietest. A 757 with Pratts is pretty quiet in my opinion.

Its amazing that the VC-10 was so quiet inside when they made such an incredible amount of noise outside.

CRJ's are extremely quiet , and i think your right Necigrad, ive noticed that the APU is louder than the engines too.

Ive never heard a 757 with P&W engines, but the ones with RR engines are not the quietest engines, especially on the outside

What flight was it that ran out of fuel over the Atlantic and glided to the Azores(?)?

Not an airliner, but the Boeing (McDonnell Douglas) C-17 GlobeMaster III is VERY quiet - I witnessed one taking off back in 1996 (brand new then) and before watching it race down the runway, I didn't even think an airplane was on the airfield!
The only time an aircraft has too much fuel is when it is on fire.
