Disaster In The Air On C5 Uk TV NOW

Wed Jan 07, 2004 5:09 am

New series examining aircraft disasters.
This one focuses on the 1989 flight from honolulu to auckland, where a cargo door blew off, causing decompression....
looks like an excellent series, C5 doing something good for a change...

I could have swore I've already seen parts of it on discovery (who made it), the interview with the parents seems very farmiliar. The reconstruction of the flight deck was brilliant as was the CG outside (They managed to get the right type of 747).

It is definitly one of C5's better programmes (Besides T.J-Hooker that is)  Smile

It was not a good programme. It was typical C5 fear-mongering shit. Not only do they constantly make air travel seem deadly and incredibly dangerous, but in this particular programme they only showed one side of the story. They insulted the NTSB, FAA, Boeing and United based on very flimsy evidence. At the very least they should have let the NTSB talk about what happened, rather than talking to an obscure Kiwi couple who "solved the mystery".

Air travel is deadly and dangerous when something like that happens.

The NTSB did talk about it and acknowledged that the 'flimsy evidence' was the probable cause of the incident.

Hehehe TJ finished the year before last  Sad (I got 76.5 Hours on tape though)

- Indeed the programme only looked at things from one side however, urm I see that Trent900 has already answered my point there, Ahem....

Thanks. Even though these programs are a little crappy and looking at it from one side, they're still interesting to watch  Nuts

It never ceases to amaze me that the professionalism of the crews in these situations gets the bird back on the ground. Brill!!!

I agree that the reconstructions in these programmes are probably some of the best seen. Tune in to the MD-11 one next week - it's really quite concerning how quickly that thing went bad.

I sure am going to tune in next week.

Although these programmes view things from one side, they are good to watch and isn't it about time that there was a new series looking at aviation disasters? I mean Black Box has been shown so many times it's beggining to fade.  Big grin

I did have one quarrell though, (not at the programme but at one of the pices of footage). When the A/C is on the ground in daylight and they show the hole and the deployed slide at 2D-R, the bustle is still attatched to the door, so how did the slide deploy???

did anyone notice that in one of the "night action" shots, the "UA747" was actually an A340 ?

Would that be the shot of it landing (a real shot), because I only caught part of it as someone was stood in front of the TV?

Don't forget that that is only one minor hiccup, they should be allowed that since the remainder of the programme was fairly accurate.

Just reviewed my tape (god I'm bored!) the culprit is 31 mins into the programme, where the plane is landing in Honolulu. A night shot almost head on is used, but guess what, 4 engines and no upper deck - looks like an A340 to me!

Richard28 - I don't have it on tape, but I believe you since my view of the TV set at that precise moment was blocked by someone. The part I saw did not look like a B747 to me though.

Like I said, Let them have this one and see what mistakes they do with the Swissair 111 one next week.

- Any idea how many episodes there actually are?

was that the disaster that killed some kid at 22 or 23 and there parents went after the airline like nothing, stole papers from a conference, recovered the cargo door from the ocean and prooved there was a fault with the locking mechanism?

can remember seeing it on a disaster program on Discovery, it was something to do with the victims and surrounding victims of air crashes. It looked at how victims familys sued the airlines etc, intreasted fact is the airlines value a life at 2 million USD in an air crash.

Hi All,

AWSHUCKS: It is supposedly screening in Canada on both Discovery and Canal D.

For anyone else interested, here's the press release from the production company http://www.cineflix.com/Press/current/130802_mayday_01.htm

We've only had 3 episodes here in Oz, hoping to see the rest sometime (though knowing Channel 7 here, I'm not holding my breath!)

Air travel is deadly and dangerous when something like that happens.

Channel 5 misrepresents the danger to get ratings. That's it.

The NTSB did talk about it and acknowledged that the 'flimsy evidence' was the probable cause of the incident.

30 seconds with an ex-NTSB member doesn't not counter 50 minutes with the Kiwi couple. The programme was sheer sensationalism.
