Keep Your Legs Crossed For 14 Hours!

Wed Jan 07, 2004 11:43 am

The Qantas trans-Pacific experience is about to get a lot more fun:

Qantas passengers have been ordered not to queue outside toilets while making the 14-hour flight to and from the US.

The directive was issued late yesterday by the US Transport and Security Administration, which is demanding pilots make a pre-flight announcement banning passengers from "congregating in groups around toilets or anywhere else in the aircraft".

http://www.smh.com.au/articles/2004/01/06/1073268036714.html

This seems a bit extreme... and terrifying to a non-sleeping, peripatetic passenger like myself. (Also, how the hell will this work after movies/meals, and at wake up time when everyone wants to go? I'm as gung-ho on anti-terrorism as anyone, but seriously, if I piss my pants on one of these flights cuz I can't queue for the loo, the terrorists win...)

This is already being done on AA and Southwest.

I think it is a good idea.

There's a difference between forming large groups and forming a line for the restrooms. I should hope both the US government and the airlines realize this. Though it sounds ridiculous (and it got a few "they can't be serious" laughs when it was announced on a flight I was on recently) I'm sure this policy has its reasons. But when you're going to stop people from waiting in line for the bathroom, then, in my most humble opinion, you have gone way too far.

You know, people waiting in line for the bathroom is one terrorist group you don't want to mess with. They'll do anything to break that door down and get inside.

Ironminds,

Maybe the solution for you would be to fly say.......SYD to YVR or any other destination in Canada or Mexico and then connect to your final US destination using the closest connecting point.  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

A fairly ridiculous rule. As a semi-regular traveller on these flights I'm perfectly happy to have my carry-on hand searched, my checked baggage searched, my ID checked, to give an explanation why I travel with so many electronics in my carry-on (I'm a geek, simple explanation) but I think forbidding me from joining the line of people needing to use the lavatories is going a bit too far.

OK, OK. Here's what I don't understand. We can't form a "group" to wait to use the lav. Whoever has ever been on an airliner will know that their is no way to form a group in the aisle of an airplane. It's only wide enough for people to form a line. So I think the announcements need to be clarified a bit as to how many people in a line make a group. Anyway, that being said, what about these reinforced cockpit doors that are supposedly impenetrable. If these new doors are as good as the "big wigs" say they are, why is there a need for this silly bathroom rule. God, I feel like I'm back to the days where I had to ask for permission to go to use the bathroom at school.

Great reply, 7574EVER...

How long until some F/As "piss off" the wrong person by telling them to sit down because they cannot queue to use the lav and the result is the pax pissing in the aisle? People are stressed and fed up with existing inconveniences, but this takes it to a new level. A queue has been an accepted protocol for civilized use of this inflight amenity for more than 60 years. The 'new normal' will now be mad dashes, races, arguments and ultimately fights - this has to be the greatest policy conceived to reduce air rage incidents. Yeah sure To conclude, if the TSA policy is going to result in airlines treating paying customers like animals, they will get a response. The question is how bad will aircraft have to smell of stale urine before the TSA revokes this policy?

the result is the pax pissing in the aisle?

There was that guy a few years ago who defecated on the drink cart. It has happened before.  Smile

That said, I don't think I've ever waited in line to use a lav. You just look down the aisle and go when nobody else is there.

It's annoying to have a bunch of people waiting in line for the bathroom anyways. Waiting in line isnt going to make people pee any faster. I like the rule.

i flew AA ORD-MIA-SCL and EZE-MIA-ORD just last week and they made the announcement but after meals and before landing at MIA when everyone woke up there were still 4-5 people waiting for each WC. The FAs didnt do anythign about it.

This is terrible! Do they expect people to stay seated for the entire time unless they are using the lav? A 14 hour trans pacific flight is bad enough. You must get up and stand for awhile stretching your legs. Has that been banned now too? When are these rules going to stop?

When I fly and hear the announcement about the lavatories, it's always about the first class lav. They ask that you don't form a line for the forward lavs which are usually right next to the cockpit door. I haven't heard anything about forming lines for the coach class lavs located to the rear.

What are the ramifications for Singapore Airline's new A340-500 service to Los Angeles? Will the 'socialisation area' and Raffles bar remain unused?

Too far TSA, too far.

What is even more confusing is the specifics of this. It talks about QF flights to LAX. These are all flown on 744's. Therefore, the vast majority of passengers are on a different deck to the cockpit. Somehow I can't see a line of passengers at the lavatories rushing through the plane, up the stairs, towards the reinforced door without someone actually noticing.

LOL, very funny.

Sorry to be off the subject but does anyone know it the "TSA stands for" thread has been pulled? I wanted to read through it again but can't seem to find it.

On long flights there are fairly predictable times for a queue to form. After the movie, after a meal service (where the trolleys have trapped people in their seats), and at the start of descent. That's not going to change. And why Qantas? There are a heap of airlines with long trans-Pacific (north and south Pacific) flights into the USA. Does someone think Australians specifically pee in groups??

Terrorism is unfortunately a reality.

But isn't phobia in the air about to become a more unbearable social phenomenon killing the pleasure of flying for more people ?

Let's wait and see.

Maybe they need to add more fucking bathrooms on the plane then!!!

This is just downright rediculous, yet another assanine idea from Tom Ridge and the Thousands Standing Around. This almost tops his duct tape idea and his silly fruit loop color codes.

I was riding coach on a Northwest 757-200 from DTW-MCO the other day. I had a window seat so it was difficult enough crawling out to the aisle to get to the bathroom to begin with. Then someone had to been taking a huge dump or something because "Occupied" was lit on the left side bathroom the whole time while i waited in line behind 3 other people to use the one on the right. We hit turbulence as we all stood in the galley at back, but the FA's did not mind that we were standing there, at least they didnt say anything.

I like window seats, but now it looks like I gotta start taking aisle seats or something

I hope QF tells the US authorities to stick it where the sun don't shine. How pathetic, talk about paranoia.

And flying on a 14 hour trans pacific service is a bit different to flying cattle class on Southwest.

Yeah, just tell that to the pax sitting beside you with bad diarrhea when they are told to sit down to wait for a lav. Sad

Maybe they could seat the Air Marshalls next to the toilets on the plane??? That way they could guard them and make sure people weren't congregating too much.

How stupid, I mean which einstein thought this one up.

i just flew yesterday from MIA - PTY and they made the anouncement, but after the movie there were about 7 or 8 in line to use the bathroom and the FAs didnt send pople back, they just have to make the anouncment from what I understand, not enforce it. Maybe we will start seing a take a number on the lavs, like in supermarket lines.

I flew on QF 108/107 in June 2003 and I sure know that those bathroom lines sure are fun... i'm sure this will cause many interesting reactions among the passengers...

So why was this directed specifically at QF and not other airlines? That boggles me...and is also making me wonder if I should book my upcoming trip to the South Pacific on an airline other than QF (who was my first choice)...

Yeah, then when he can't hold it anymore and makes a run for the bathroom, he will be tackled and have his face on the news for running up the aisle while onboard an aircraft.

Not only that, 7574EVER, there'll be a million cheers here on these boards: "looks like this drunken doofus got what was coming to him!", "yeah, idiots like that belong on greyhound....heheheheheeeee....", "they need to ban booze on planes to keep stuff like this from happening", etc...(that last comment almost surely delivered by a 15-year-old kid whose not old enough to drink and that beer is only consumed by the "dumb jocks" in his school)!

And how many people is group? If a group begins at two that means you cannot talk with anybody in the whole aircraft? I think this rare new rule will disappear really fast, unless the companies obligate you to stay seated all the time, and even more: You cannot talk with the passenger next to you (that's group!!)

Yes, but what about congregating in the back of the aircraft ANYWAY especially on long hauls? On my usual long haul people are standing at the back of the 744 or 343 yakkin to friends or looking out those aft windows or just standing there to have a few minutes of sanity when they arent stuffed into an economy class seat. VS attendants are very nice about it, sometimes you see them talking to the passengers themselves. Or on the 343 lots of people are milling about in the aft galley getting a drink or whatever. Why is it only when you go to the bathroom? Course i DO see that on arrival to LHR a lot, its that last minute chance before you land or you circle the Home Counties for an hour or so.

Now ive heard the no congregating in the front lav area announcement, and it makes sense on US flights internally, I can see the risk and this and that, but for an aft lav on any flight its rather pointless. Id like to see the F/A who tries to enforce this rule- I think they are more about letting people go who have got to go (hell ive seen people ducking in when we are 5 minutes from landing because o fsome emergency and though they will yell at you its usually something serious if someone feels they HAVE to get up on landing).

Did this thing about Qantas really come from Ridge's office? God what a waste of space...

This is crazy, I mean, it's okay to stop people just hanging around in groups and I'm all for the protection against terrorism, but to not be able to line up to go to the toilet. The airlines are going to have to pay alot in cleaning urinated on seats.

I did EWR-LIS on a CO 752 on Dec. 26 and the captain asked the passengers not to congregate near the bathrooms and to stay away from the flight deck door.

On the return last Tuesday (AMS-EWR, Continental 772), one flight attendent ordered me and four other passengers not to queue near the rear lavatories.

Although I guess that it is possible to understand the concernes of passengers being near the cockpit, it is simply impractical to ask the passengers to stay seated and run to the lav when it become available.

Maybe they can distribute a bed pan to each passenger ? Get rid of all lavatories, that would allow several extra rows of seats. And when terrorists strike, you have something at hand to throw at them !
