Why The A380 Now?

We keep seeing and hearing of increased use of regional jets because, at least in part, this approach enables airlines to offer more frequencies.

So as a result we see things like the RJ on intermediate hauls and the 737-800 on coast-to-coast flights.

Which leads to my question: Is there really a market for a jumbo-jumbo sized craft like the A380 in this environment, or is this just part of a "build it bigger" mentality?

(This is not meant to start a A vs. B war. No trashing, please.)

You're thinking solely of the USA (and to an extent, Euro) markets...

...tell me, how many RJs and 738s do you see in Asia?

I personally think there is a market for the A380. The increased capacity will help some carriers to carry extra people, and possibly get rid of a few flights due to the increased capacity (note a say a FEW carriers, not many!!). It will also (from what I have heard) be far more economical than the 744, and with its increase in capacity on the 777, must be pretty appealing to some airlines.

From a passengers point of view on a long haul flight a bigger aircraft is better. You can not use an RJ to fly from Europe to say, the far east. As mentioned above, the A380 will help relieve slot constraints etc. Instead of an airline flying 2 A340 out at the same time for example, they can use 1 A380. Its very similar to what happened when the 747 entered service. It replaced 2 707's.

I hope this makes sense 'cause its past my bedtime.

The A380 makes sense for long haul flights into airports like London's Heatrow or Gatwick and Paris' Charles de Gaulle - where you can't increase frequency but still need to accomodate the growing demand for air travel.

The A380 will be useful when increasing the frequency of flights (particularly long haul) will not be possible.

The skies are busy enough as they are, with air traffic increasing at such a rate and airlines busy adding more and more flights with smaller aircraft, there is going to come a time when it must stop when the skies above major cities become dangerously overcrowded.

I can see a big market for cargo.
SHA will likely become one of the biggest cargo hubs in the next 10 years. SHA's uplift capacity is getting contrainsted, having super jambo's
will increase capacity without increasing traffic.

A380 also makes sense as a way of increasing capacity on very L/H flights without increasing the number of flights.

By that I mean the likes of SQ which operates 3xdaily LHR-SIN and QF which operates 2xdaily LHR-SYD. Given the length of the flights, and the fact that time differences limit the windows for departure the A380 allows an economical increase in capacity. A fourth additional LHR-SIN flight by SQ using a 744 doesn't offer much more choice if it departs at a very similar time to the others.

Alternatively, on the North Atlantic 744s can be replaced by smaller aircraft because an increase in frequency can offer a wide range of departures - e.g. LHR-JFK from 0800 to 2000.

This is where the A380 will find its niche - high capacity, very longhaul routes.

I agree with a lot of what everyone says However an Issue I see is where are you going to put a space that size where in some airports already have an overpopulation problem....EWR comes to mind. And even if you have the room most of the gate space isn't designed for that type of aircraft in reference to it's size. Also can Ground operations at most airports be ready in time to handle the A-380

Airbus has made sure that airports will be able to accomodate the 380 (with a few exceptions *coughcoughLAXcoughcough*), so I don't think that will be a problem (I think EWR is on the list or ready or will-be-ready airports, actually). But I don't think EWR will get a 380 any time soon. If they come to New York, which unfortunately I doubt, they will come to JFK. There is a market for them, but not in the US. That's why no US airline has ordered them, and no US airline probably will. If Airbus was making a plane for the US market, we'd see a very different plane. When an airline has full 744s at a very crowded airport (LHR and NRT are two good examples), and there's no room to add new flights, there's your market for the 380.

Actually, the US will see quite a few A380s. FedEx at Memphis. Virgin Atlantic will probably fly to JFK. SQ,KE, LH probably too.

The US will see 380s yes, but I don't think they'll be on the east coast, and apart from FedEx, they won't be US airlines.

Airbus was (or claimed to be) upset that Boeing could use big profits on the 747 to subsidize their other lines, or use discounts on the 747 as leverage to sell the smaller planes. The 380 is an attack on that cash cow, and Airbus expects it to pay off more than just taking market share from the 747. It's intended to hurt Boeing financially. Of course, if the naysayers are right, it could end up hurting Airbus financially. That's why airliner building is called The Sporty Game.
