First LCC To Be Annexed ..

Wed Jan 14, 2004 4:04 am

With the current proliferation of LCCs, which of the current crop will succumb to one of the big boys.

Or can the industry continue to support the two tiered system?

Finally which of the new start ups from the established carriers will fail/succeed?

I hate to say it, but I think the question is, which of the current crop of big boys will succumb to the LCCs?!!!

USAirways will fall to Southwest at PHL, then spiral farther downward.

ATA is probably the weakest LCC...their largest source of revenue comes from military and leisure charters. They'll like take the course of Sun Country if things get tough for them.

I can't believe you all think Song and Ted and will survive Jet Blue and Co.
isn't Virgin about to also give us their version of LCC stateside as well?

I'm still surprised some of the smaller American based LCC's haven't teamed up in some way or another, at least in a code-share/FF linkage. B6/F9 and FL/TZ seem like good combos. Not suggesting mergers or anything, just offering wider passenger distribution possibilities than they currently offer individually. If the legacy carriers attack them too viciously they may drive them together creating a Southwest and JetTranFronTA LCC duopoly to contend with.

While it won't be annexed, I think Ted will be the first to die. First to merge or bought out, I think, will be Frontier
South Carolina - too small to be its own country, too big to be a mental asylum.

I believe that TED is first. I think Delta will also have difficulty expanding Song to face jetBlue across all their markets unless they introduce a smaller plane as well. 199 seats is a lot to fill in smaller markets each flight. I believe that Frontier is going to be picked off first out of the LCCs. I don't count the other two because they are extensions of their parent companies.

For what it is worth, I believe Ted, followed by quickly by Song, and after that Midwest's saver service followed by Midwest.

Well, I'm gonna chime in with my support of Frontier and say that they're stronger than you guys are giving them credit for. I dont expect to see them going anywhere for at least another 10 years, and after that, an additional 10.  Smile

That said....what ever happened to Sun Country? I thought they were still flying? Oh well, I was gonna vote for Sun Country here anyway. I agree about ATA.

I hope I'm wrong, but Independence Air looks like a prime candidate. Tough market, and a seriously desirable hub for a hostile takeover.

Independent Air? No , there's no venom there at all. You better hope to get that commuter service going again in IAD. They're going to have a nice head start on ya. Also, when US liquidates that's one less competitor.

JMC1975..

Your information might be correct about ATA ...if it were 1995!!

Military/ charter flying accounts for about 11% of ATA's revenue. Also with one of if not the lowest CASM in the industry ATA is not the weakest LCC.
