How Do You Fix Alitalia?
Pretty self explanatory... AZ may back off necessary job cuts in order to appease the unions. So let's say appeasing the unions is a good idea...how do you fix AZ?

By nature Alitalia is a European airlines. Thusfore it suffers from teh same kind of issues that most European airlines suffer from: Strikes and Economics. Alitalia is an airline that has been highly regarded since it's inception in the late 1940's when BOAC and TWA helped to create the airline.
Alitalia, since that time has been offering superior service, quality, and frequency. The airline now has embarked on a rather large scale expansion process and is going in the right direction. Alitalia, does not suffer from the American train of thought when it comes to service. Most U.S. airlines are suffering from identity issues, lack of service, poor marketing, ill-presentation skills, and lack of niche market. Alitalia on the other hand offers highly regarded products such as Mille Miglia, Magnifica Class, and its superior training faciilities. Alitalia also offers high quality inflight service, high quality inflight meals, high quality inflight audio and video, high quality overall ecperience and product.
Futhermore Alitalia has one of the most far reaching international networks. Many complain about this or that at Alitalia... Remember one thing Alitalia is a symbol of Italian pride, a symbol of fashion, a symbol diplomacy. Alitalia is not US Airways, nor is it Delta Airlines. Alitalia is a hallmark in aviation for service, safety, and experience. Alitalia has not suffered a major airline in years. Even Alitalias safety record is on a superior par!

...and uh, how many destinations does it serve in nearly each one of those other than Europe? About 3... maybe 5?

Both UA and CO serve five continents, as does AZ, with the latter likely introducing African service relatively soon.

...sure it did...but it has been paring it back recently. It may suffer from the same issue as LX and previously SR...global aspirations, but not the traffic to back it up. Their (currently not that interesting) global network is probably a liability at the moment rather than an asset.

Sure, why not. Doesn't have much effect on the bottom line since it is on par with the safety levels of other major airlines in the region and world.
That said, nobody has mentioned any way of fixing the economics of the airline, with or without right-sizing its employees.

Since everything I've read indicates that AZ will be swept into the new AF+KL pan-European airline group the question is less relevant. Perhaps AF+KL+AZ will find use for the surplus employees as they expand. The question is will expansion be in Italy or will the new combined airline prefer to develop a hub elsewhere?
I think if the new airline group has any brains at all it will maintain each airline as a seperate operation while integrating FF programs, service classes etc to provide a uniform quality product yet with distinctive local flavor in each of the three countries served.
It will be interesting to see how AF+KL+AZ works out. It will either be good for all three airlines, or it will be a disaster. Hopefully though under the influence of AF and KL, both noted for relatively good service, the service on Alitalia will improve, just as hopefully under the influence of KLM, Air France will actually start to clean the exterior of their aircraft properly rather than suggesting us to the "EuroBrown Look".

I don't know the answers to these questions. However, I would hope the answers are No and Yes, respectively.
If the answers are Yes and No, respectively, then Alitalia should go the way of Sabena...Ciao! I'm not much in to government subsidies for what should be private sector commercial enterprises. And, I'm not big on labor unions forcing businesses to be costly and too expensive to compete. I don't pay taxes in Italy, but if I did, I wouldn't want my tax dollars supporting operations that can't stand on their own feet.

In a word, privatize! The talk about privatizing AZ has seemingly been going on for eons. The endless talk to which there is no action may be doing more to keep AZ in a quagmire of malaise than any other single factor. This, more than anything, killed the AZ/KL alliance. Any serious investors capable of fixing AZ have probably lost interest due to the empty rhetoric of AZ's impending privatization.
The European "legacy" airlines who have been privatized in deed as well as word have done very well, BA and LH being leading examples.

I'm all for privatization, but I'm curious to hear the other side of the argument, in spite of the fact that I believe that no rational 'other side of the argument' exists. What do these strikers have in mind to keep the company running and still employ half of Italy?

It appears the Alitalia unions may have gone to the same school of economics attended by the old Sabena unions.
Why isn't the EU clamping down on the government subsidies of Alitalia like they did when the Belgian government tried to rescue Sabena? Admittedly, I don't know the facts surrounding Alitalia, so I'm willing to be educated by any Alitalia supporters out there.

You are perfectly right.
If privatized and, most importantly, if it got rid of the unions, AZ would be a great airline.
Unfortunately, getting rid of the unions is not easy at all in Italy.
Just today they opposed the 2004-06 plan by proposing another plan which says:
- Keeping AZ under Government control.
- Giving some control to local governments (Governors and mayors!!!)
- Having FCO as main hub and MXP just as a freight hub (this is insane!!!)
- Having the Italian railroad and tour operators in the board
As you can see, they are not just irresponsible, but they pretend to be managing the company. In the wrong way, of course!
