Only two flights stand out....

I think it was Summer 1990; on a USAir MD-80 (BWI-BUF), about 20 or so.

Also, in 1995 NW 727-200 (ORF-DTW) with about 20.

Probably on JFK-STL, just a few days after the first day of 2003. I saw at least 4 rows, 2 forward, 2 aft of me, on the AA MD-80 that flew me back to STL. In addition there were 3 rows unoccupied on the other side of the aircraft. I'm sure many of you have seen more empty. The cool thing about an empty flight for a passenger is that the aircraft climbs much faster, and can cruise much faster, because the MTOW is lowered significantly. How much it is lowered, of course, compares to how empty the flight is. Would be a faster trip, I think, if you were a passenger on a flight. I'm surprised that flight was empty...It was right after the end of New Years Day, people coming back from vacation, and many people in STL I would think have business in New York. That is a high-density flight, which, not to forget, was between two very busy airports (STL at that time, JFK still).

Myself, my mother, and 4 other passengers on an Air Ontario Dash-8-100 (About 30 seats). The flight was from YYZ to Providence R.I., and I used the opportunity to switch sides and photograph on the approach, over the bay.

I thought it was kind of funny that:

a) There was one crew member for every 2 passengers,
b) We were onboard with free tickets that I had won in a raffle, meaning there were in fact only 4 paying customers on board, and,
c) The flight was 100% PACKED on the way back, exactly one week later, and we almost got bumped off.

Some years ago flying from BKK to FRA, on a Thai 744, 23. december. It was a codeshared fligth with LH and on LH ticket, the LH flight left BKK about ½ hour before the TG flight in the night, so maybe all the people was on the LH plane. But never the less the Y cabin was less than 1/3 full, it was amazing. The FA asked us to sit where we wanted, and my friend and I got a row of the middleseats eachother, after some heavy brandies, and chatting, we just went to sleep. The very nice FA came every 15-20 minutes to ask if we wanted some more to drink, and the brandy/cognac was served on this "small" wineglasses in Y, yes not plasticglasses, to the top, booze taken from Bizz or First.
On the way from FRA to CPH 24. december we were upgraded to Bizz with a great breakfast.
Maybe that is why love Thai Airways?  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

I flew couple fo times on Swissair ealry morning flights to ZRK from ARN, think it was SR413. It was usually only 30-40 pax onboard their A320.One time i remember we were only 12 pax + crew.I had seat 32 A and the next passenger was in row 17 or something liek that.it was a great flight.
some 3 weeks ago a SAS Dash Q8 came in from MMX as SK118.It had only 2 pax.The flight should have been cancelled but they needed the plane at ARN for another flight.Must be a weird feeling beeing on that flight

SAN-ATL, the very first flight out aboard a DL 762 on 9/8/01, we had maybe 20 people plus crew, so everybody had a row to themselves....very nice flight, unfortunatley the world changed 3 days later.

I flew from CDG to ORD two years ago this month.....shortly after 9/11....on a United 777 and there were 15 to 20 people on the flight. Was sooooo nice. The flight attendants were so cool and kept on filling us up on extra food and drink....worked for me.

Back in 1990 or 1991 I was on a Northwest flight from Tampa to Detroit with only about 30 passengers. I am not sure what kind of airplane it was but I remember there was two isles. I had a whole row of seats to myself in the middle so I could lay down. I also remember back in the early 80's there was a lady flying on British Airways from Hong Kong to London on a 747, and she was the only passenger. I think that happened because the flight had been delayed several hours and most of the other passengers had been moved to other flights. Plus BA needed the plane back in London, although I could be wrong about that.

God bless through Jesus,

Jeff

My emptiest flight was from PHL-YOW on a Dornier 328. I think there were something like 16 passengers on the flight. Everyone had room to spread out. I'm jealous of all the people who were on flights where the crew outnumbered the passengers!!!!

New year's day 2002...

YYZ > YYC

ex-CAI B767-300 with 12 pax aboard. I was sitting near the rear of the A/C and the next closest pax was seated near the overwing exit doors. Had close to 18 ROWS of vacant seats between us! F/As sat in the center seats across the aisle and we had a great time. Service was great and the beer was flowing like a river...(in and out) Big thumbs up

Also been on several Air ontario Dash 8 flights with 5 pax or less.

SFO-IAD

B777-222 on a UAL flight at 7:35am all I know is that every one in coach had their own row but it was a real bummer that we had a domestic 777 with no PTV's.  Sad All I know is that it was a cupple of months after 9/11 and you could see the black trails of the fighter jets that patrolled the skys and I think that's what really freaked them out.

2. Comair Brasilia MEM-New Orleans Jan 1992 -- 3 passengers.

Pardon me for being just a tad off topic, but the emptiest major airport I've ever been in at a given time was Atlanta on September 15, 2001. I took my parents to the airport to catch a flight to the UK, and the sheer quietness of what is normally one of the world's busiest airports made me shudder. It was positively eerie, especially given that most of the people milling about weren't passengers -- they were armed guys in fatigues with police dogs.

I have had my share of less than full flights. The greatest luxury of all to me is to have the seat next to me empty. I remember when UA had connoisseur Class (I miss that!) from LAX/SFO to HNL and back on the 742. The best seats on the plane were the two single seats on the right hand side of the a/c, 16J and 17J, if I am not mistaken. The only problem was, they were near the galley and lav. but at least you were alone, and they had a great little "table" between the seat and window. I think 16J was an exit row seat.

Happy (con)Trails!

Have recently flown from SYD to MEL with QF on the QF6 (I think), which was opb a 747-400.
Knew something was weird when they didn't board by seat number. Anyway, must have been less than 30 people on board. Mad.
Take off was a bit lively too! 38000 ft in no time at all.

Flew Sydney-Melbourne on a QF 747. The domestic flight was full, so some of us were booked on the international positioning flight. There was only about a dozen pax, so they just put us all in the Business Class cabin, and put a short video on the PTVs and gave us a great feed and bottled wine!

Also once did a 10-hour PanAm 707 Sydney-Bangkok leg with about 9 passengers. There were more crew than pax, so it was great. Also, the weekend that Ansett started international services, the outbound flights were full, but the returns basically empty. Flew back as one of 5 pax in an A320, so they put us in Business.

Mostly these days, though, it's all pretty full.

Cheers

Mine was a Lufthansa flight from STR to DUS on December 31st, 2002. A 737-500 was scheduled for the flight but I guess that the mighty number of 12 passengers (including myself) caused them to use the larger 737-300 for that flight.

Mine was on November 19, 2003, BA298 ORD-LHR, BA 777 (RR Powered). Plane had a dispatch problem coming to the states and it was late arriving. When it arrived, crew had to offload for 10 hours due to regs about time in the cockpit. So as a result, plane went back about 5 hours late (at 2:00 AM). Most PAX either got transferred to other flights or opted to go the next day. I opted to fly this one since I missed my original connex due to weather. As a result, we had the flight crew, about a dozen cabin staff and only 15 passengers! But, they let us all sit in BA Business class, where we enjoyed flat beds, good food, lots of drink refills and very fast cabin service. That was the life.  Smile

I was on NW73 from GUM-NRT on 3/10/03 out of 430 seats there was only 120 passengers and a crew of 14. So there was 134 total people on board the aircraft, which was a Boeing 747-200.

While living in Montana, I would fly out of BTM (Butte), usually on Delta. For awhile DL had mainline 727s running to SLC 2x/day, via BZN (Bozeman). On the morning flight once, we flew the BTM-BZN leg with a 727-200 and only 9 pax. Proportionately, that was the closest to empty flight I've ever been on. As it was, only about 20 or so got on for the final leg to SLC. Wide open, to say the least.

Number-wise, I flew on UA Express (Air Wisconsin) back in 1988 from YNG (Youngstown) to ORD via TOL (Toledo), on a BAe146. The YNG-TOL leg had six of us, and they asked us all to move to the front until TOL for weight balance. Plenty of coffee for everyone!  Smile

A few years ago my wife flew NW Airlink from Eau Claire, WI to MSP aboard a SAAB 340 as the only passenger. She said the flight attendant simply sat next to her and said, "Okay, here's the safety stuff. I'd look real stupid talking to you over a PA system."

A flight from Garuda. The flight was from Jakarta to Los Angeles as a one way charter and then to Amsterdam for a maintenance-check. The 747-200 made a stop at Chicago because of a overbooked KLM flight and 7 passagers transfered too the Garuda bird, including me. I never had such a good flight like that one. 3 pilots,12 flight-attendents and 7 passagers.......on a 747-200

I flew on a Canadian Airlines B767-300 back in 1998 from YYZ-YYC-YVR with about 14 passengers + crew. The flight left Toronto shortly after midnight and we landed in Calgary at around 3am. I think only 3 people got off, the other 11 continued on to Vancouver. I thought this was very strange, but I found out that CP usually did this in order to position aircraft at YVR in the morning to do the eastbound trips back to YYZ.

I flew on a Metro of Skywest DL Connection from Phoenix to Yuma in Oct 1982 with a friend and two flightdeck crew. We were on a Delta Standby AirPass and thought we had just got on the flight at the last moment at PHX only to find we were the only two pax on the flight. The F/O asked us to sit right at the back to even out the weight, and left the cockpit door open for a running commentary of the flight. Continuing on to LAX, the plane was nearly full.
The next almost empty flight was about 9 days later from Cleveland to Detroit on a Delta A310, with 33 pax, only 17 of whom were flying on to LGW, with 2 more joining at Detroit.

G-MANO ATP JER_STN . The a/c was to position empty to stanstead but any of you who work in dispatch / Load control will know what a bitch she is to trim empty. Thus we had not ballast so me and two other ramp staff rode her empty to add some weight to the back!

Commercially i flew G-CIVY SYD-SIN with a total of 42 on board including the crew!!!!!!

My mum needed to fly from WLG to AKL last year at the last minute and she could not get on an Air NZ flight as their flights were fully booked so she had to fly on Jetconnect and she said that the flight only had on about 20 passengers in Economy and 1 in Business Class!
