Any STN experts out ther I'd like to know about the place. I'll be flying in on the 13th Feb at 19:20 departing 17th Feb 15.05 anything else intersting due around that time? How's it for spotting in the terminal/gate? Do the Easyjet domestic arrivals/departures arrive/depart at a particular 'block'? How do you get between the individual departure gates? Train?

From STN to LHR is about 45mins to an 1hr. I haven't been there for a while but I remember thinking that the outside of the terminal looked amazing! Train to the gates? No you walk

Have a look at www.baa.co.uk for flights. The airport is OK for watching the movements once airside, but poor to very poor when landside (especially in or close to the terminal).

I'll be doing an 'aviation-nuts' trip in march, flying HHN-STN-HHN with a 5hrs stay at STN. I figured most of the time I#ll be sitting in the Starbucks. But I also want to do some spotting (no photos), especaily some cargo ops. Is it possible to walk around the airport? Something like a tour offered there? I looked up BAA's website, but couldn't find any Info about it!

If you're on an easyjet domestic flight, then you'll be coming into gates 81-86 or thereabouts. You have to walk from the main terminal to these gates, about 5 mins on my legs. Here you'll also see the FR domestics.
I think 45 mins - 1hr to LHR is a pretty safe bet, depending on how busy the roads are.

Depends what gate you are going from - most of the domestic gates only really give you a view over the apron, which can be pretty deserted during the day. Satellite 1 (easyjet int'l flights and other airlines such as air berlin but not ryanair) gives the best views and is usually quiet enough to get a good view across the airfield and across to the cargo apron where you are likely to see a UPS 767 parked and maybe a channel express a300 or GSS 747 etc. Satellite 2 similiar views but mainly of arriving and departing aircraft from long range. good if runway 23 is in use. Satellite 3 is exclusively Ryanair flights and as such you will get excellent views of well, lots of ryanair 737's.
Terminal only really gives you views over one apron and you will mainly see ryanair 737's.

Stansted to Heathrow is about 60 miles, depending on the M11 and M25 this could take between 1 and 3 hours!

Was it me or was that Stanstead airport deliberately constructed in a whole in the ground?
You cant see the airport from a distance, at least not from the rail approach.

Not exactly an expert but at 21/01/04 I did AMS-STN-AMS on an EZY 733, just 4 fun!
Nice airport except that I have seen nothing but 737's and a few others but that were cargoliners.
As it is mentioned before you have an excellent view towards the cargo area out of the international EZY concourse as you can see at the picture below. But if you want to make good pictures you'll have to ask STN to get the windows cleaned! The view towards the runway was also good but could be much better if the boarding facilities didn't block the view.

Speaking of making pictures. (I disembarked the airplane by stairs at the back. Haven't done that for years and never did it through the backdoor.) Anyway, the gate agent allowed me to take pictures of the plane while I was walking opposite the direction to the gate. Then you can imagine that I was pretty surprised when I arrived at the main terminal building by train some security guy said it was forbidden, when I tried to photograph the train. Why? Did it elsewhere the whole day anyway and haven't got problems with that.
Wanted to check out the domestic gates. They send me away cause I didn't had the right boarding pass. Sorry about the complaining but I'm so used to AMS. You can go everywhere you want whether you have to be there or not.
Two questions:
What's so special about Starbucks?
I saw only three cargoliners while there is plenty of capacity for cargo. Especially the Fed Ex area looked huge to me but was completely empty. Is there over capacity in terms of cargo at STN?

There's a really good place to take photos of the runway at the end of the area where the Ryanair international gates are. The glass could do with a clean though. Saw a whole stream of 738's etc and a cargo 744 (airline unk).
Not sure if you can access that area as a domestic pax.

Thanks for that Aviationfreak. I'm really looking forward to it as the day draws closer. It will be my first flight since last summer and my first time on Easyjet and a 737. STN looks like a light, airy and modern airport from the pictures I have seen. Not expecting to see much except EZY and Ryanair 737s!

Forgot to say. About you're best seat question in another thread: Had the emergency seat on the inbound flight. One of the most forward window seats on the outbound. Both were very good but I personally prefer the last one.
Just make sure you'll be one of the first 30 to check in. You will have first choice then.

I've flown on quite a number of U2's 733s (but interestingly only one of its 73Gs), all of which being in good condition. All of the 733-operated legs I have flown saw a clean and tidy interior. No problems whatsoever. However, two people on this site said that one particular 733 in its fleet was noticeably scruffy. Can't remember its registration, though.
