What Was Your First Turboprop Flight?

Fri Jan 23, 2004 6:14 pm

Hi!

I was wondering what your first turboprop flight was?
My first one (at least that I remember) was in 1989. From Atlanta to Gulfport/Biloxi. I am pretty sure it wasn't THIS plane but it's the correct type and airline.

My first was a 45 minute flight on an Air New Zealand ATR 72-500 from Christchurch to Wellington. My favorite turboprop! Love Air NZ's leather seats on their prop aircraft.

I am going to fly on an ASA ATR72 in March from TYS to ATL. Does anybody here have experience on their service/seats?

I have been on both ATR types before and I do like the ATR72 better.

Mine was 25th April 1996 NCL-LGW on BA8072 ATR-42 G-BUEB.

Fantastic, sturdy little plane and I still have the footage of the landing at Gatwick on film somewhere!

1985, Aberdeen to Sumburgh via Kirkwall on a BA "Budgie" Highland Division. It was the aircraft called "Glen Fiddich". Stranded in Kirkwall for three hours because of fog in Sumburgh. I was only 8 at the time and can remember being a) terrified of the plane door when I went to the toilet in flight and b) getting served a coke (special event) and a rombouts biscuit.
It's amazing what sticks in your mind as a child.

My very first turboprop flight was on Horizon Air from YVR to PDX, needless to say I wasn't very keen on it as I had originally booked a flight on AS directly to SFO but somehow without warning got bumped onto a connecting flight! But as it were....I loved it, a little hot inside, and a little more cramped that the 734 that I was supposed to be on, but other than that took some nice pictures.

Mine was Antonov 24 of LOT Polish Airlines, back in 1984. Actually that was my first flight ever, so I was pretty scared and excited. Me and the rest of my school class took a special short flight organized for schools on Poznan- Wroclaw- Poznan route (20 minutes of flight on POZ-WRO sector).
I remember there was a sky marshal onboard as at that times (remember Poland was under the communism then) there were a few hijack attempts of these planes (West Berlin was the most popular destination as it is situated just about 90 km from Polish border, less that 300 km from POZ).

NAC F27 1978 HLZ - WLG - NSN

Was only 6 years old but still have vivid memories of the huge windows on the F27 and the f/a giving me the bowl of lollies to pass around to everyone on descent. Been in love with flying ever since!

Quite an interesting experience as there was severe turbulence during the approach back to Helsinki due the thunder storm!  Nuts Better than any roller coaster! Nice flight, but I prefer much more Saab 2000s instead of S340s.

Hii folks!

My first turboprop flight was made with Portugalia, one portuguese airline, and i flew from Lisbon (LPPT) to Faro (LPFR). The aircraft was an ATP.

I was seated on seat 17F and on my side was the very popular singer RUI VELOSO, and he offered me an autographed card to my girlfriend.

The aircraft was CS-TGL, and here is one foto of it, enjoy!

Hi!

My first one was many years ago, summer of 1981 from DUS to AMS. It was a Fokker F-27 from NLM - PH-KFD - and I remember a few things. First of all the plane had already both engines running when a mother and her son came late and the pilot had to shut the engines again. The next thing I remember was the fact that the F-27 had those beautifull huuuuge windows and because of the high wing we could have an excelent view from the air, and finnally and indeed the best part was the F/A ( only 1 on board ) was a tall, handsome very atractive and beautifull dutch girl, she was awsome and very kind. I remember saying to her that our plane at that time was already 16 years old and she said that the plane was not bad for that age!!!!
A nice memory of that short flight!

Fokker F-27 VH-MMS
Port Hedland to Perth (Western Australia)
3 hours 15 min

A long time ago but seeing as I recorded this info I was obviously hooked on this aviation stuff even then.

Here are a couple of pix of the graceful old bird - but when I flew in her the paint scheme was still of that MacRoberstson Miller Airlines.

I don't recall the date, but several years ago AA ran a special when they began n/s service between BNA & JAX. That rt made up my only non-jet flights. I remember feeling that it wasn't as bad as I had expected it to be.

My first ever turboprop flight was from ABE-PHL in 1996. It was only about a 15 minute flight, but that was about all I could stand. I know that turboprops are a reliable and sound means of transportation, but I am used to A340s and B747/777s (crossing the atlantic) which feel so much more sturdy and substantial.

My connecting flight on this trip was PHL-Worcester Municipal in Massachusetts (they don't even have commercial air service any more).

Since then I have done ONT-LAX, but my tolerance has not increased at all.

My first turboprop flight came during the summer of 1968 when I flew on an ALM Fokker F-27 from Curacao to Aruba, about a 45 minute flight if memory serves me right. Had a great view out of a port side window thanks to the high wing. I flew on F-27s a couple of more times and I'll never forget the whine of those RR dart engines.

cheers, Ralph

1965 Rio Sao Paulo and return on a Sadia Dart-Herald (aka HandleyPage Herald).

Nice picture of the Dart Herald at http://www.jetsite.com.br/mostra_nostalgia.asp?codi=61

(This was the same year, and just a month or so later when I flew Varig Convair 990 Coronado (originally ordered by Real Aerovias) on the Rio- Miami route returning about a month later. And the connection from Miami to Chicago was on a Delta Convair 880.)

1965 was a very good year to be a 12 year old!

Patrick, how much variety do you expect from DTM?

A little off topic but the first 3 out of my 4 intercontinental flights (which will NEVER get more than four!!!) on Iberia were on the same plane (EG-GHX), so that wasn't good for variety either.
