Aircraft You Feel The Most Safe Flying On

Sat Jan 31, 2004 6:56 am

I feel much more dangerous on little jets like the 737, than on jets like the Boeing 777. The lighter the aircraft is, the more vulnerable it is to turbulence in the skies, at least, that's what it feels like. I feel much more secure in medium sized jetliners like the MD-80 and giants like the 777. What aircraft do you feel the most safe flying on? Why do you feel safest on them?

Since when is a 737 that much smaller than an MD-80?

I feel safe on any plane that is operated by a trustworthy airline.

I'd choose to fly on a 777 over any aircraft any day. They just seem so sturdy and well-built.

Pardon me, Ushermittwoch. I meant the 737 Second Generation models, like the -500, -400, and -300. The MD-80 is over forty feet longer and definently a lot heavier than these models. The -800 and -900 models however greatly reduce this difference.

Boeing 747s. They have great wing to sail on if all engines flame out.

Why?well,i always know the pilot is awake, and theres NO chance of overshooting the runway unless its 20 feet long. I just feel safer in it.Altho,If the engine fails, your 100% screwed.

I feel safe on any airliner. It wouldn't be in the sky if it was not safe. Nor would the pilots fly it!

To re-phrase it perhaps...I feel the most comfortable on the 757.

Any Boeing aircraft. The 747 is probably safest for travel across the Atlantic, with 4 engines you would be fine if something happened to one or two..

I felt very secure on the B752 and the B738. But, since I don't hop on just any airline, I always feel secure.

Anything built by Boeing, Airbus, MDD, Bombardier or Embraer (I guess, Turboprops are not included in the survey). Additionally, I wouldn´t hesitate to fly on russian airliners as long as I´m convinced the airline maintains its airplanes well.

For some reason I always feel safer on a Boeing aircraft - quite ironic as I've only been on 2!  Smile/happy/getting dizzy. I just think they're more comfortable and better built Big grin.

I don't look at the aircraft if i'm concerned about safety, i look at the airline. Your aircraft is only as safe as the airline maintains it. Ofcourse i have no second thoughts about safety if i'm flying on Lufthansa or United compared to say, Cubana, an airline with a poor safety record, or a unknown airline from parts of the world where safety records and maintenance standards are poor.

Having said that, i feel VERY comfortable flying on 777's, i've watched many TV programmes and read about many of the techinical features of the 777 and i have to say, the 777 is as safe plane as you''ll get. That is not to say i feel any less safer on a A330 or 747.

For international travel, I feel safest on the 777.
For domestic travel, I don't really have a preference.....However, I don't remember ever feeling not safe on an aircraft.

Any plane manufactured by a major Western maker such as Boeing, MDD, Lockheed or Airbus. I would fly on a Russian plane if it was maintained by a flag carrier such as Aeroflot.

I feel safe on the 757 most i think, and also the 744 and 763 too.

I used to work on the DC-10,and i rarely felt safe on that!!

I also feel safe on 737-400s/NGs and for some reason the A300 too!

I used to feel safe in the past on TriStar flights also.

It would have to be the 747, any series, but 300 and 400 because they are the newest models. Something about the size and the fact that it indeed has four engines gives it my vote.

[email protected]LHR, I know what you mean, I wouldn't touch Cubana with a ten-foot bargepole, whether it was on the DC-10 or not. I feel very safe in a Boeing or Aius aircraft. I wouldn't touch a Russian aircraft either. The airlines reputation has a lot to do with feeling safe as well. The more well-known, the more safer you feel.

744 , hands down... size and power, make you feel very safe crossing the pacific.

As for the LEAST safe... *drumroll* and the winner is......... a DC-9 that belonged to Spirit. When I went into the lav there was actually some glue and part of a decal for Eastern Airlines left on the wall panel. As I was deplaning I asked the F/O and he told me the plane had been flying in the middle east before it came back to the US. He said it had been " fixed" ( those were his exact words ) before NK took delivery. I was VERY happy to be in one piece and walking through the terminal.

The Aircraft that I think is the safest is the Airbus 319,320 and 321.
When I did a search for Accidents on the 319, 320 and 321. I only found very few fatal crashes.

A good airline and pilots are what really count. If i had to pick a plane it would be 777. or any seaplane is good with me.

Personally, the B777 is VERY nice to ride on. Overall I would prefer any airbus over a 777, or any Boeing for that matter, because when the Boeing's hit turbulance they tend to move up and down, where the Airbus's move side to side. I dont like the feeling of dropping out of the sky! But I have to hand it to Boeing, the 777 is abloutley seamless to fly on!!

For me, it's more the airline than the aircraft. An aircraft is only as good as it is maintained by its airline. If their claim is saftey is job #1, then they must be accountable to the flying public.

I don't really have a specific aircraft that I'd like to fly on, but I'd feel safe on any airplane operated by an airline with a good safety record. But also, I'd feel safer on an airline who's fleet is comprised of newer aircraft, not older aircraft.

Wide body aircraft feel safer than narrow body ones. I probably feel safer on a 4-engine a/c for a transatlantic flight, although I think I flew more often on twin engines. B777 definitely has a solid, sturdy, safe feeling to it.

Perhaps I'm biased, but anything that has a big red maple leaf on the tail.

Despite the financial challenges of the last year, always feel safe and sound flying on AC. Especially returning from a holiday, definite feeling of being "home", flying on big red.

Triple 7.. Solid, comfortable ride.. Approaching 10 years in service without a single frame written-off. Total thumbs-up  Big thumbs up

The 744 is definitely #2.. The MD11 and DC10 are tied for third but having the opportunity to feel "safe" on one has become history.  Sad

Recordwise, actually the 777, A330, and A340 have racked up perfect safety records. Not one fatal accident so far. Of course, they have not been in the skies quite as long as the older Boeing and Airbus aircraft. Of course, they are also more technologically advanced than some aircraft. Just a note. The 737 is a very safe aircraft, it has definently kept up well in the skies...I just don't feel as comfortable flying on it I guess, for reasons I cannot explain. However, I still feel safe enough to fly on it, I guess, because I guess it is afterall a medium-sized airliner, not a dinky one Big grin

I've always felt perfectly safe on all planes that I flew on (except for one flight on a 737-400 which had some special circumstances, but that's a story for another time). But I guess I feel safer on smaller jets such as 737's rather than 747's mostly because even though I know and fully understand all the physics involved, I still have a mental hangup on how those huge things actually can get in the air and stay there.
