America West To Resume ANC On June 1!

Sat Jan 31, 2004 8:06 am

America West Airlines will resume daily service between Phoenix and Anchorage on June 1, 2004. Flight #140 PHX-ANC will begin on June 1 and flight #141 ANC-PHX will begin on June 2. Service will likely be on an Airbus A319 and there is no word yet if the service will be seasonal or year-round. It looks like Frontier will have a little competiton now. Now America West pretty much covers the North American continent...from San Jose, Costa Rica to Anchorage, Alaska. Wow!!

I just tried pulling up the availability for PHXANC for several dates after June 1 on the shares system and got nothing except a bunch of connections on AS. Are you sure this is a HP flight and not some sort of a codeshare?

We are starting PHX-ANC service on June 1. It has not been announced yet but will be shortly I imagine. I read it off of a printed schedule we get monthly. It will be operated by the A319, probably season as it has in the past.

What do you mean Frontier will have a little competition now? Wouldn't UA, NW, CO, AS, DL, and AA be any competition for F9? Or do you mean alleged LCC service?

Anyway, any additional service to Anchorage is good news. Just wish it was year round.

We definately need a second carrier besides Alaska that is willing to operate year round.

I miss Reno Air in that regard.

Alaska Airlines rapes Alaskan's that was to fly. Competetion is a good thing.

Thank you L-188!! Finally someone else seeing the dark side of AS!! Although you're lucky near ANC because at least you have several airlines to choose from in summer, unlike us freezing people up here in FAI.

Anyways, yeah, it would be great to have more choices to fly out of AK, especially to the west coast without having to stop in SEA. Now if only more airlines would make it up to FAI, we're only an hour away and plenty of people up here really dislike AS and will do anything to fly with someone else. Wishful thinking though.

Yes, Frontier is comming too, but they aren't going to have year round service at this time, they just want to tap into the cruise ship and tourist traffic.

Which is unfortunate, 2 or three new carriers taking on AS would be a very good thing.

Your right about Fairbanks, too bad Delta dropped it a few years back.

That is exactly right as for Frontier will begin nonstop from DEN-ANC flight into effective June, 2004. Hope with those load factors was doing well and what are you think other passengers will like go to Alaska?

Like Northwest

The Seattle runs are Codeshares with Alaska.

If you want to go to MSP, then by all means fly NW, but an MSP run isn't going to compete with somebody headed for the west coast

You have to wonder has WN ever considered flying from the US West Coast to Anchorage or Fairbanks. Does the 737-700 with the winglets in WN configuration have the range to fly this route from OAK or SEA?

I wish WN would come up here, but I understand they have never worked out a schedual that was acceptable for their unions and fleet utilization.

Well the 757 would be great but in years past the 319 has done the job just fine. I remember the loads being fairly light, but that was before we implemented the new fare structure. I would expect bookings to be higher this time. They will upgrade it as necessary.

Yeah, but they only fly to ANC year-round. Maybe also to JNU, I'm not sure. But up here, FAI serves the North Star borough (county to those in the lower 48) which has about 80,000 people. We should have more than just AS overcharging us year-round. (That sounds kinda funny. Yah, I want someone else to overcharge me!! Big grin )

I was part of the HP crew that worked at ANC during summer 2001. Those A319s did a fine job and every single flight was either full or very close too.

Glad to see HP going back to ANC.

Here we go...

HP 140 PHX 1930-2350 ANC 319
HP 141 ANC 0115-0750 PHX 319

Ops 01Jun04 through 30Oct04.

OK, fair enough, but for the most part, the new PHX-ANC route isn't going to give the West Coast that many opportunities to connect to Alaska... the routes through Seattle are much more convenient for everyone except those heading to Southern California or east of Arizona.

FlyingNanook-

I also wish NW could serve FAI year round- they could probably make a 319 from MSP work in that market during the winter.

The flights are officially loaded, however I don't know when it's ending. I looked up 31DEC04 and it's showing for that date...so it might be year round.

Too bad no one wants to compete with AS on the PDX-ANC route either. I hope once NW starts PDX-NRT service, more NW flights will come on line
such as PDX-HNL/OGG PDX-ANC, etc.

Either. Even LAX, MDW, or BWI if they chose. BWI while fine, is up there for the 73G, this is one place the 319 is distinguishably better than the 73G.

Alaska Airlines rapes Alaskan's that was to fly.

Here we go again...  Insane

Interesting statement, especially since fares have stayed essentially the same to most AK markets over the 12 years I've worked for AS.

Don't you think that if Alaska Airlines were taking home money in wheelbarrows that other carriers would opt to fly there, too?
