Who's Flown A Full-motion Simulator?

Tue Feb 03, 2004 2:49 pm

I was wondering who's ever flown a full-motion airline simulator? I'm going on a trip to FedEx in Memphis to fly the DC-10 simulator there on Friday.

I've flown:

B757-200F = UPS
B767-200 = TWA
DC10 = FedEx (soon)

i've flown a 737-200 @ ATL, MD-82 or -83 at DFW, the fixed base 772 sim in DFW as well...

i'm going to fly the CRJ jet bridge trainer at delta connection academy in sanford this weekend, although that's not a full-motion sim, it will still be cool

Have flown the B737, B757, and MD-88 sims at Delta...nice rides indeed! Helps if you do a quick study the day before, spend a few hours in the manual, that way you have some idea of what to do!  Big thumbs up Fortunately for me, they were made readily available by reaching over to my bookshelf. Look online for checklists, etc...try to impress your instructor!

How much does it cost the operator to run a simulator. I know that they probably cost at least $120,000. But how much do they charge for one run. Never really thought about that. And does each airline have their own simulators. Like SWA (737's) UAL(B777,737,767,757,747,A319,320) or do they send them out to different places that will take in any airline. I know that US Airways has a few and I think one is an A330(?)

I know sim time can't be logged as Flight Time, but can it be logged as "Multi Engine" time?

I spent about two hours in a MD-80 full motion sim at the TWA training center in STL. This was obviously years ago. Was absolutely amazing will never forget that experience. If you can get a chance in one DO IT!!!

Wait a second, am I getting this right? Anyone can just go and fly a simulator? Or do you have to be in a training program? I think i read some of these posts ambiguosly so thats why im asking.

I've flown the 737, 767 and the 777 sims. MD11lover: I think you need to be in training or you have to know someone. Once I was in a Boeing class for composite repair and the instructor said screw it, let's go fly. The other two times, I just knew someone.

I got lucky because I knew someone who is an instructor.

All you need are the right connections if you're not in training...

I've flown 727 and 737-200 sims.

Before 9/11 I had the chance to fly the F/A18E sim at Boeing's plant in STL. I crashed into the drink twice and the back of the carrier trying to do a trap.  Sad

It wasn't a full motion sim but it was in a dome that gave nearly 360 degree vision and it was the closest I have come to feeling like I was 'flying' in a sim. But anybody who has had hours of fun in a frasca will tell you that those things are a nightmare.

I have flown a AB300 B4 simulator at BKK and B747-400 simulator at BOM. You do need to have connections to even get into the training facilities of airlines. I was able to get into these because of my dad.

I've flown on a Airbus 320 at the Sabena Flight Academy in BRU.
It was a very good experience (I landed alone!) even if it was only 20 minutes (it's very expensive to fly on a simulator, that's why...)

In London anyone can fly on a simulator. I will sometime either the b737 or B747-400 the cost is £250 for 1 hour but you only spend 20 mins at the controls.
your pilots today on this 747 flight are captain oliver hardy and assisting will be FO stan laurel.Have a safe flight

A couple years back, I flew a UAL 737-300 sim after sitting in on a recurrent training session with a friend of mine and his father who flies for them. When the line pilots were finished, the sim was still booked for another hr, so we got to take the controls. Got to takeoff and land (both successfully none-the-less!). The sensations are really amazing! You actually are pushed into the seat when you advance the throttles on takeoff.

I flew the 737(-400 I think) in Frankfurt at Lufthansa's base. It's great fun, and anyone can do it. You can fly any of the LH planes. The scheduling depends on when actual pilots are not booked for training/checks at that time. I only did this general thing, where I went with 2 other people I didn't know, and we each spent 20 mins in the captain's seat flying, and 20 in the copilot's seat, doing gear, etc. I know however, that it is possible to request a full hour for yourself (cost more obviously), and you can pick your 1 or 2 crew members. Check out http://www.proflight.de/. You can book from there for Lufthansa in their sims in Bremen, Frankfurt, and Muenchen. Like someone earlier said...if you get the chance to try, DO IT!!!!!  Big thumbs up

In 1981, I flew a full-motion T-38A Talon simulator at Williams AFB outside Phoenix. It was pretty old; there was actually a camera stationed on a movable rig that "flew" over a landscape/city/airport layout hung on a wall about 25 feet tall.

Then in 1988, I flew in a computerized full motion B-757-225 simulator at the Eastern Air Lines base in MIA. It was fantastic!  Big thumbs up

Where can you get a Boeing 747 "classic" flight manual? Please let me know.

I've always dreamed of flying a 747 classic, and would love to try out a 747 classic simulator. Do such simulators exist, and where can you find them? Please let me know.

I got the nicest gift ever for my 15th b-day. 1 hr in a 737-700 sim at SAS flight academy in stockholm. Came back a few weeks later and also got to try the 737-500 (no "TV's" on flight deck in that one!) and also the Dash 8-400. My opinion is that the Dash was easier and more fun to fly.

I certainly logged the training I got in the DC-10, 744, and (more recently) CRJ as multi time. Just stick it in the flight sim column as well- it is also dual recieved but not PIC or SIC. I made sure each entry in the 10 and whale was signed off by the instructor. In the CRJ, the proof is in the training records so I didn't bother getting that signed.

The verdict is still out on the subject... if someone says not to count it in your time, all you have to do is pull it out. I can get my landing qualification from the sim, so why wouldnt it be counted as multi time?? Many long haul pilots have to get their takeoff and landing currency back occasionally in the sim. If it doesnt count, then how would they get their currency legally?
Much better to do that than to be wishing you had those extra multi hours so you could qualify for an interview (I would not be in the CRJ right now if I did not put it in my logbook).

I toured the UAL training facilities in 2000 with an aviation group and I was able to fly the B744, 777-2 and a 767 (which was set to night). The only times available to fly were at 4 am though!

I also played with a brand-new KC-135 sim at an airbase-KRDR.

They all were simply amazing! My favorite was feeling the tug push you back, and feeling the cracks in the pavement.

Also, almost anyone is able to fly the sims. Like mentioned earlier, you usually need to be in training or know someone.

There is also the ATOP program if you have the cash. A few of my friends did this and loved it! A high-altitude endorsement is also available.

As Midnight Mike said, here is the link to the trip report.

At this facility, I was able to use an MD-11, MD-90 and B717 sim and it was GREAT!!!

Note, I am NOT a pilot in training. But I think you will LOVE the experience.

And it did NOT cost me an arm, leg or both! GO do it. I can't wait to do it again.
