Driving home today I saw a British Airways 744 on approach to Sky Harbor at about 2:45PM local time. I knew the regular LHR flight will soon change to a 747 but did not think it had started yet, and besides, that is way too early in the day to see that flight.
Flightarrivals.com shows this flight as BA 9100 from Birmingham. So. What gives? On the way to the desert to be parked? Sold?
Just curious. Thanks for any assistance.

Because that way to replace from B777 to B744 aircraft and it getting more extra passengers who flew out of PHX today and it should need to bring it back to B777 tomorrow or another day. Thanks!

BHX is my home airport, and indeed this was a special charter.
I believe it was for some car workers. There was a similar one last year with VW workers i think it was, maybe this is similar to that.

Well, I guess the 747-400 is here until Tuesday. It's parked right where they usually park Air Force One. I was told that it will be leaving on Sunday for some sort of day trip, but will be back in the afternoon.
What a wonderful site to see a BA 747-400 here.
How can I find out when it will depart on Tuesday? Is there a website for tracking departures?
Also, how can you tell the tail number of an aircraft as it is inflight?

Can't wait to see more of the great BA 744's!!!! Love those planes even more since they are the new "Flagship" of the fleet. Fantastic to see that BA is bringing back the 747's to PHX!!! Leaving from PHX on Sunday for our trip to Scotland (to bad it's on the 777 and not the 744)!

BA is also doing some charter work on 747 from LAS? Does anybody know who they are for? Maybe because of this work and the need to get crews etc to LAS that is why they are operating the 747 to PHX already. Any details appreciated.

Flown both 744 & 777 to PHX, prefer the777! The 744 was a bit tatty.

The 747-400 and the 777-200 are both charters from Birmingham. They have been chartered by AUDI. The 747 will be leaving for LAS and then repositioning back to PHX. As will the 777.

I believe with the introduction of the B744 to PHX it is helping to make up for the withdrawal of LH's A340 service to FRA. Although I think we are losing the daily BA service to a 6X times weekly service (not sure why)? I hope BA continues this great service year round but make it daily!!

March 28th is when 747-400 service starts to PHX. It has nothing to do with compensating for the LH discontinuation. The decision was made before the LH pullout was announced. I think it's more to do with having 4 classes instead of 3.
The BA 747 is here until Tuesday, except for the little jaunt to Vegas on Sunday. BA must have extra 747s lying around to take one out of service for 6 days.

I work for Globeground and we are handling this flight. It is being operated as BA flight # 9101 from PHX. Eta in LAS is 1210 local, arriving at Terminal 2.
Gate # 2. I don't know who chartered the aircraft, but it sure will be nice to see BA in Las.

Well, I don't know about that. I watched her take off to Vegas this afternoon, but I just rolled by KPHX and G-BNLW is back. Must be nice to hop on a chartered 747 for a 45 minute flight to Vegas and then come back.

I watched it land.... Their 777 landed about 20 mins after it. BA Airplanes are really cool, and seem to be very well maintained. I've never flown them though. Some day maybe.

What I have been thinking is this. If the damn thing is parked at the Executive Terminal, someone there has to know when they expect such a big visitor to be packing up and leaving. next, the odds of the 747 leaving before 2PM local are very slim as it would arrive in the UK around 6AM. I figure anything after 2 or 3PM is fair game for a departure. So I leave class at ASU around 2:15 and will be scouting around the airport until I figure it out! When it does go... I will be out at the dirt lot off of airlane in a white honda civic! Stop by and say hi!

ok, Speed Bird 9172 to LAS departs at 4:06PM... I thought the 747-400 was nonstop to BHX?? Or it may be another charter. I am going to Sky Harbor now to figure it out!! Should be fun!

Who is on the Vegas flights? Brummie auto workers? Or different passengers, on a charter organised by a US company? (Like Qantas used to operate shorthaul charters on behalf of British tour operators from LHR to Europe during the day, when the planes would otherwise sit on the pricey Heathrow tarmac from 6am til 10pm).

Seeing on fboweb that they are doing a nice sightseeing trip over the Grand Canyon on the way. 16000 feet altitude(over the 8000-9000 foot rim). Nice! Must be nice, especially in the late day sun right now...

Well bitter sweet day today at PHX!! Just as I was about to cross the road from the Terminal 2 parking garage over to the fence looking over runway 8, my brother calls me from the southwest hanger area to report that BA has just pushed with the tail to the north! I high tailed it over to terminal 3 parking structure to watch the take off. So it went off of 7L with a horrible back light from the intense winter afternoon sun! Not a very enjoyable position to view the departure. It was funny that right after the 747-400 lifted off the ground, Speed Bird 289 Heavy just turned final for 7R. Within 5 minutes we had a BA 747-400 and a 777-200 at PHX! It would have been ideal if they both used 26 for take off and arrival! But oh well! Glad to have seen them both!

I got some really great pictures of her coming across the south bridge on the way to 7R. I was very surprised to see BA #289 show up right after the 747 departure. BTW, the 777 turned around and took off for Vegas at 7PM. There is no #288 to London this evening.
I imagine the people who arrived at PHX last week, boarded the 747 for the quick trip to Vegas on Sunday and probably stayed there. They brought the 747 back to PHX to park until today. Maybe there was nowhere to put it at LAS, or it was cheaper here because this is a BA destination and LAS isn't. Anyway, I think it came back empty on Sunday. So, it probably left empty to LAS today, to pick up passengers to take home to BHX.
BTW, I was anticipating at 1PM departure originally, so I came over to the airport at around 12:00. Anyway, 6 guys brought a tug over at around 12:30 and stood around underneath the plane for awhile. I had to leave, so I don't know when they actually brought it over to B23. BA usually uses B25.
Just how many people does it take to tow a 747?
I am wondering if the crew stayed here for a week, or went back on #288 and another crew came over to take this thing home?
