Your Worst Airline Meal

Fri Feb 06, 2004 1:21 pm

I flew on American Airlines from PHL to DFW last week. The manicotti was the worst meal I have had on any airline, anywhere. It was just a few shreds of pasta overwhelmed with some heart clogging cheez whiz substance. I can't believe any self respecting chef could come up with such a thing. Strange as this sounds, I like most airline food. AA's pasta dish served in December was pretty good.

What was your worst airline meal?

Thats easy! I flew the HNL-LAX route on UA back in June of 1996 that served a dinner. It was a red-eye flight, not that its important, but anyway, they served us in Y class pineapple chicken. It was a cold cut actually and it didnt taste very good at all so I didnt eat it and decided to starve to death throughout the whole flight. That was the ONLY meal option the entire Y class got, just pineapple chicken. How lame!

In June of 2002, I flew NW (DC-10) LAX-HNL. The meal was absolutely disgusting! It was some sort of pasta concoction with zucchini. It was garbage. I still get sick just thinking about it. Also, many moons ago, I was flying a UAL DC-10 LAX-ORD on a breakfast flight and got food poisoning from the French Toast. I guess that would qualify for this post.

The worst by far i have had was on a QF flight MEL-BNE i was served a Foccacia which had tomato, eggplant cheese and some other species of rabbit food in it. It was soggy and tasted like dogfood. I think next time ill order myself a kids ham and cheese sandwich meal.
cheers

For me it is anything that involves eggs. I have never yet had a flight that can re-heat eggs to anything edible. In addition chefs tend to like to add some weird veggies to them, I one time saw a whole zucchini in my omelet.

TWA had awful food when I flew them JFK to LHR in 91. I ordered a muslim meal and got crap. I still do not know what that was. Go to any muslim country and you will never find food that resembles that. I can't even describe it.

Maybe this doesn't qualify but how about a 1960s Pan Am 747 Paris (London?)-Los Angeles where caterers where on strike. PA was 6 hours late and NO - NONE - ZILCH - NYET food on entire 13 hour flight. Well, 'cept peanuts.

I flew UA from FRA to IAD about a year or two ago. We had something steak/beef like. IT WAS HORRIBLE. It tasted like cold plywood. I was really hungry but just had to pass on that one. They did however have quite a good snack before we began our descent. So at least not a completely without food.

My worst meal was on LH from FRA-EWR. I was a sleep and when I woke up I had a meal in front of me. I thought it was chicken alfredo. Well I was wrong after eating most of it I realized it was some sort of salmon in a cream sauce. Well long story short by the time I got to EWR I was so sick that a I walked out of customs I went straight to the hospital. Worst flight and worst meal.

FINNAIR, Hong Kong - Bangkok May 2003. Some kind of fishcake thing that I heard most passengers asking if there was another choice.... there was not.

OK, this is coming from someone who usually enjoys getting something to eat while in flight, especially when it was a full meal with hot entree, salad, bread, cheese, dessert etc. I've eaten hundreds of meals inflight from 1970s onward and never gotten sick yet! Smile Anyway, when I was on Canada 3000 they served what was supposed to be lasagna, but it was a watery red paste with flecks of yellow/beige which I presumed were pasta or cheese fragments. It was terrible, but I did eat it, since that was the only choice and I was hungry. The worst part of the meal was trying to keep it down while the brat kid sitting beside me smeared his lasagna all over the folding table in front of him. He started whining and kicking the underside of the folding table, so his softy mother stacked his meal tray on hers and raised the sloppy table onto the back of the seat! Can pigs fly? Yes. They proved it to me.

Aren't the Chinese domestic airline meals interesting? One can go on guessing what's inside the mystery meal. I heard the food is good though!

When I flew from Chicago to Los Angeles by United on last spring, the food was awful. Sandwich was terrible and coffee was cold. So far United is worst airline I've ever flown. Big grin

On several occasions I have gotten the filet mignon that was under-cooked. It was so raw that I could not cut it, but then who could cut a steak with a plastic fork???... Trying to cut this steak was terrible because not only was the steak blood red but the blood came out and quickly filled the bottom of the plate with blood. And as I was struggling to cut the steak all I could think of was raw flesh... I was able to eat over half of the steak, I had no choice because it was a 12 hour flight. Luckily, I didn't get food poisioning.

Flew ORD-MIA in a NW 727-200 in 1986, they served some meat with string beans that was quite terrible. I was quite young but somehow I did'nt forget. Years later on a BA 757 between LHR and Pisa they served something that looked good but did'nt go down at all.
And I love airline food in general.

LHR-ORD with UA. Food was great, but on the internal flights food was crap.
I think it was supposed to be a cheese roll.

My mom and I flew Aeroflot from GDX to KHV in 1991.
The meal consisted of a stale pastry, a hard boiled egg
and powdered coffee that you mixed yourself.
They had 1 big bowl of salt for the eggs that was passed
from row to row by the passengers.
The meal was bad, but the overwhelming body odor that pervaded
the cabin made it worse.

Last December on NWA. The outbound flight was some pasta dish I couldn't identify. However the return leg was probably the worse inflight meal I've ever had: A very soggy stick of dough with some melted cheese product and freeze-dried vegetables, they called it pizza. I nearly puked just looking at it. I tried a bite and that was it.

Some years back, Northwest served a barbecued chicken sandwich, that was nothing more than a spicey, watered-down sauce slopped on a bun....there was maybe 1/10th of an ounce of chicken. Worse thing I have ever eaten...while I didn't get sick, my stomach was screwed up for 2 days. About a year later, I flew NW again....guess what, the same sandwich was being served. I noticed that hardly anyone wanted lunch on that flight..everyone must have learned their lesson from an earlier experience.

BOS-FRA on LH in 1991. We had something that was supposed to be chicken. Deep fried balls in a clear(!) slimy sauce. Not very good at all....
But then again LH has really improved again. I had some of their mozzarella (di bufala!!!) filled ravioli in a pesto with real pine nuts last March, very impressive for Y-class!

VS LHR-SFO, two weeks ago in Premium Economy, the only vegetarian option was a HORRIBLE vegetable curry. Now I have no problem with airplane food, or food of any sort, but this was just awful.

And who thought it a wise idea to serve Indian food on a 13 hour flight? Trust me, there was a long que at the toilets. Sometimes being vegetarian can be inconvenient, haha.

Oh, and one other meal from LAX-HNL, IN FIRST CLASS, they forgot to load my vegetarian meal, and after some words with the FA who claimed she could do nothing but serve me a pasta with meat sauce or nothing at all, she managed to get a rather bland veggie meal from coach, and arranged it prettily on the china, which made it look great, but it still tasted like crap. My mother had a wonderful roasted scallop and shrip dish however. And it was nice of the FA to arrange for some meal for me. (I jest)

Cheers,
Jason

Je89_w,

You asked about domestic Chinese airline meals. I got a site for everyone to see that goes with this thread

http://www.airlinemeals.net

It's a great site and you can even explore the world of airline lounge food.

Check it out and let me know what you think of it.

UA between ORD & LAX in february 2001 : something like an hamburger, half cold with a bad smell and taste sauce.
UA between LAS & ORD in february 2003 : salted peanuts as breakfast
UA : breakfast on all the flights between USA & Europe.

I still fly UA between Europe & US because the mileage plus program is very nice and it's the cheapest company (most of the time)

Easy! Virgin Sun. Corfu-MAN. What we got was meant to be somesort of breakfast with sausages, beans etc. I think. Anyway, some parts of it were dry, other parts were soggy and it tasted horrible. Normally I quite like plane food  Wow! honest! Smile but this was just a step too far on the side of horrible.

1998 flying MU from PEK to SHA in Y class. The seats must've been the smallest I've ever been in. The meal came in this square aluminum tray that looked like something a "TV dinner" would come in. When I peeled back the lid I was unsure of what was what! It seemed that I had some sort of gray noodles, beef and a full size scallion all submerged in this horrid brown/grey gravy. Needless to say I did NOT eat. The desert was interesting though... a prepackaged flourescent "Fun cake" that seemed to be a melon flavored gummycake filled with more melon flavored jelly. Odd.

What? Airlines still serve meals?  Wow!

ELP-ORD on AA used to have the Deli Bags, but not anymore!  Angry

So I guess my worst airline meal would have to be the stale trail mix stuff they pass off to us a breakfast!

Having flown nearly 900 flights worldwide in 20+ years-I have never had a bad meal. Although was disappointed with Garuda's beverage service on a CGK-HNL-LAX flight. Bevergaes were only served with meals, (not in between), and it seemed like the only choice was a warm tangerine drink.
Lots of people complain about airline food, but it is just regular food!

I thought AA's pasta cheez whiz was the worst ever....until I read the posts of everyone's experience. Pineapple chicken bologna on UA, mystery dishes on US and foreign carriers and what really takes the cake is the community salt bowl on Aeroflot for the hard boiled eggs.

I thought VS was considered good but even they have dished out a few bad meals.

Hughes Airwest, haven't heard about the top banana in the west for a long time.

My former boss flys AA to Tokyo 4 times per year in Business Class. He brings his own food. Packing a lunch on International premium class, what is this world coming to?

http://www.airlinemeals.net is a cool site...check it out.

My heart goes out to those of you who got food poisoning. There can be nothing worse than getting sick while flying or being away from home.

It was on a UA flight from SFO-HNL-AKL on a 742. To this day, I have no idea what exactly it was. They said it was Sirloin, but the meat was more like a veggie burger and the sauce seriously smelled like microwaved hair styling product.

Ameican Airlines, operating a former TWA route, offered it's passengers a nose bag of dubious items that smelled remotely like they had been near a food preperation area some time in the last few months. Having sampled the contents I was soon convinced that the said nose bags were only offered as ballast, or to give passengers with a free hand something to carry to Los Angeles and then dump it there.
Perhaps an illegal transfer of toxic waste by stealth?

I flew AA first class from ORD to MIA a few months ago. We landed in Miami where friends met us to drive to Vero Beach. Mid way through the drive I began to sweat and shiver. By midnite that nite I was in the emergency room at Indian River Med Center. All test pointed to siomonella. The Dr. told me never to eat chicken and rice even if in first class. AA never said they were sorry .. I sent them over 1000 dollars in Med bills as proof and I received a form letter as a response. As a Plat AA flyer they really sucked when it came to dealing with this.

Sorry to say this but CX have served some vomit lately

Business class breakfast. Muffin with scrambled egg and cottage cheese.(appears as a soggy mess)

A few years ago on the HKG to MNL sector, chicken soup was served from a flask. With a dried cracker.

Current CX regional meal out of Hong kong is processed ham and cheese sandwich.

ChgoFlyer reminded me of a bad memory from about 20 years ago. AA DC-10 LAX - DFW, first class chicken entree. I got sick about 4 to 6 hours after I ate it. I was already home, thank God for small favors. Didn't taste bad going down the first time. From now on, I will follow his doctor's orders and stay away from the chickens in any class.

Whats up with the DL fruitcake? I thought they outlawed the carriage of fruitcake. It's a nasty concoction that should be banned.
