Why doesn't airbus build the guppys for commercial cargo airlines? It seems like it would probably sell pretty well.

They actually charter the Belugas out to companies that need such an aircraft on a temporary basis. So if Airbus built them to sell to other operators, they'd be losing income that they would get from the Belugas they charter out.

As said before, they are available for charter (to some extent). However, if there was enough extra demand to justify another one (or two, or ...) then you can be sure that Airbus would build it. No more have been built, hence there's probably not enough demand to justify building it. QED.  Big grin

Exactly who operates the aircraft once it's built, or how, is irrelevant. It seems unlikely that the damage done to their sales by another operator would completely outweigh the income from selling the aircraft. Anyway, they're in the business of making planes, not hiring them out; why not give that job to another organisation that already does it well?

I'm not an Airbus fan, but it would be awesome to see a Beluga in service commerically!

Im not sure if there is an airport ready to handle the plane. Thats a lot of people's luggage the ramp rats have to mess with. I can just see baggage claim now. What a zoo!

The fact that freighters " weight out" before they "cube out" gives the answer. No market exists.
