Unusual Call Signs....

Wed Feb 11, 2004 5:00 pm

Anybody know how BA got the call sign Speedbird? Did it have something to do with when Concorde was flying? Any other airlines have unusual call signs? Would be curious to find out.

Speedbird was around a long time before Concorde was even thought about. The logo was designed by Theyre Lee-Elliott, circa 1935, for Imperial Airways. Perhaps somebody knows when the callsign was introduced!

For more general information on Imperial Airways, take a look at some good 'real' stuff at:-

http://www.imperial-airways.com/History_page_3.html . . . etc!

In Spain we have a commuter airline called "Islas Airways" using "Pintadera" as call sign. "Pintadera" means an aboriginal draw made in the walls of the caves in the Canary Islands, the operational area of this airline. This draw is painted in the vertical stabilator of their ATR-72
