Most Amazing Thing Seen From Window

Thu Feb 12, 2004 2:12 am

Tell of your sights. What is the most amazing, captivating thing you have ever seen out of an airplane window?

I know mine. The Island of Oahu at sunrise. Reef runway landing. It was perfect.

Thanks.

I guess the most amazaing thing I have seen from my window, is a parallel landing at LAX September 8th, 2001. It was the first time I have seen such a thing while actually being inside one of the planes landing. This may seem minute to others, but that's as exciting a story as they come (from me) lol.

The most amazing thing I have ever seen from a window was in July last year. We took off from EMA and were at about 25,000ft and climbing. All of a sudden an Air Canada 747 heading in the opposite direction flew straight beside us - contrails were such an amazing sight. I was so mad that I didn't have my camera ready, but I probably would have missed it anyway because it was going so fast. On my way to Dalaman, I got some great shots of other aircraft passing by. It was the best flight I have ever been on for seeing other aircraft in-flight.

I can keep it simple (and maybe boring for some)...it's a tie.

1a. The Rocky Mountains, while flying BNA-LAS (AWESOME sight from up there...takes my breath away)

1b. White Sands, while flying PHX-DFW (it really IS white!)

The curve of the earth from Concorde.

and

A mid-air refuel flying underneath my BA757 on the way to Hamburg. The pilot told everyone to look out of the window for the next 30 seconds and then, suddenly, the two aircraft wizzed past below.

The most amazing sight seen from an airplane window was probably the final approach into Kai Tak airport.

Another experience was seeing Mount Everest from a Scenic flight in Nepal.

As a passenger- Landing at Kai Tak, especially during a typhoon. Kudos to the Singapore Airlines 744 crew.

As a pilot- The first time I performed and actual ILS at night. Seeing runway lights when breaking out of the clouds is quite a sight!

Fly safe! Use your checklists!

Vectoring into LGA runway 31 with the southern end of Manhattan parallel to our AA MD-80 on 9-11-2001, and watching AA 11 (B767-223ER N334AA) screaming across Central Park and slamming into WTC 1, R.I.P. ...

ANA,

What planes were involved in the refueling?

Not totally amazing, but I was flying into Milwaukee from Orlando during 4th of July and could see all the fire work shows going off along the lake coast.

While sitting next to the window right behind the wing and then seeing the engine catch fire was pretty amazing. We were just getting going at LAX back to BOS on a United 767. What was most amazing however was the alacrity with which my fellow passengers whipped out their cellphones and booked themselves on the next United flight out of LAX!!!! Back in August 1996!! I am still impressed!!!

Laddb - I have no idea. They must have been military and I don't know much about them, but, even if I did, they went by very quickly (as you can imagine).

I forgot and just want to add to Phaeton......I've also seen the Himalayas; they were poking out through the clouds while I was on a Jet Airways flight. Imagine 28,000 feet and the mountains are as high. It is, quite simply, fantastic.

UNN1011:

So you saw that plane impact the WTC from your window? Must have been scary!

Most amazing thing I have seen was scary as s**t...flying through a thunderstorm near Miami with lightning striking all around us and pouring down too. Of course I love the sunrises and sunsets. Also, on a JFK-FRA flight, sitting on the flight deck and seeing the southern tip of Greenland appear through the clouds! Quite amazing sight!

The amazing:

1. A tiny sliver of the moon in a completely dark sky. Flying from the USA to Brazil.
2. Fireworks. Flying from BWI to MCO.
3. Thunderstorm at MCO. We were on the runway, and had to wait 40 minutes to take off while the thunderstorm shook the plane on the ground.
4. Venice. Flying from CDG to VCE.

The amazing but sad:
1. January 16, 2003 - Flying from BWI to FLL - Space Shuttle Columbia launch, the last one.
2. September 11, 2001 - Flying from MIA to DCA - Smoke rising from the Pentagon.

Mt St. Helens poking up thru the clouds.
The Mississippi during those record floods in the 90s.
A monster tearing pieces off of the wing.
A forest fire smoke reddened sunset, SFO-RNO.
Lake Tahoe, every time.
"Glory", on the clouds below me.
On approach to PHX Sky Harbor, a plane off the wing going the OTHER way. (Must have just switched runway directions)

The sight of 4th of July Fireworks while flying from HOU to EWR.

Seeing the result of receding floodwaters over the South East US.

Seeing the forest fires in Big Bear and Arrowhead lake (Southern California).

Manhattan's lower east side while approaching EWR at night.

The Grand Canyon.

Anybody overfly a previous accident or an accident under investigation on the ground at or near an airport?

I saw some nice sunsrises, but the most amazing sight was the following...

About 1000 people standing below the final approach path to see our arrival, go-arround, second approach and touch down.

Oh, perhaps I should add that I was sitting in a Cathay Pacific 744 while landing at Bremen (Germany). It was the first ever landing of a 747 there. The number of people is an official number that was given to us. I didn't have the time to count.

Returning to S27 from MSO on my first PPL solo x-country, I saw two bald eagles "playing" or "fighting" or whatever at my 2 o'clock. It was practically impossible to judge the distance, but they were exactly at my altitude and they were so close I could see their heads fairly good. Would have made a nasty hole in my wind screen.

The Approach into London Heathrow on a busy, and SUNNY, English day. We were in a holding pattern for over half an hour, and I got to see all of the major sites on the ground as we flew over London, and I got to see all of the other aircraft circling around in the same holding pattern that we were in! Very cool.

Also, the approach into STT (St. Thomas) All water, and all of the sudden you see wooosh, the runway appears out of nowhere, and you land with full reverse thrust to stop the plane in time.

A) seeing the whole perimeter of Manhattan
... and Ground Zero
for the first and only time,
at night,
from the air, after doing a go-around from LGA runway 4.

B) seeing the darkness of space from seat 26A on G-BOAC.

An experience, in the early 60s, when working as Cabin Crew on a BOAC 707 flight from LHR to NYC.

Coming along the coast of Eastern Canada and crossing into the US - there he was, a US fighter aircraft sitting on the end of our left wing - I could see him clearly! What a sight!

Fighter escorts, nothing new, Mate! They did it 40 years ago!

For me, it was on an America West 757 on approach to Las Vegas from Ft, Lauderdale. The plane did a series of turns right over the Grand Canyon and the view was simply spectacular, the sun was high in the sky so visibility deep into the Canyon was amazing. I'll never forget it.

Another one was a night flight from Nashville to Ft. Lauderdale on a Southwest 737-700. As we flew over Georgia and northern Florida, we flew between a series of very active thunderstorms. The lightning flashes illuminated vast columns of clouds giving them an incredible 3-D look that at times looked like the atmosphere of a gas giant planet like Jupiter or Saturn. I watched the whole show with my face pressed against the window. When we finally left the storms behind I was really disappointed the light show was over!

cheers, Ralph

Two sights of many really stand out. The first was in about August of 1996, on a DCA-LGA shuttle (Delta?), approaching NYC, near sunset on a crystal clear night (~7:40 pm) north along the Hudson River, and seeming like I could touch the top of the WTC towers, then the lights of the city's buildings, bridges and places like Yankee Stadium starting their glow. With the WTC towers gone now, this has a special meaning. The second was in April 2002,on a BA 777, EWR-LHR near dawn, flying over Ireland and seeing the whole southern coastal areas up high, a place that took me several days to drive around.

I absolutely love seeing the alps when landing into GVA coming in from the lake to Rwy 05 (I believe).
Landing and taking off in MIA is also a spectacular sight. Those white beaches and nice building on South Beach do it for me.
SFO is also quite a sight on take off.

I was on a flight from PDX-DFW back in 2000 and we flew over the forest fires that were destroying that part of the country at the time. Parts of Oregon and west and northwest Idaho were completely charred and you couldn't see anything but black ground and smoke for miles and miles.

Two things I will always remember:

First, several years ago on an AA from PHX to DFW. It was late at night, the sky was clear and there was a full moon. I was sitting next to a window on the right side. We had eaten our sandwiches, and the lights had been dimmed. Next thing I saw was the moon being reflected from a lake somewhere in New Mexico.

Second, around 95-96 I flew AA from ORD to ORY. A comet was just becoming visible. I remember looking out the window and thinking how fortunate I was to be seeing it from a plane somewhere over Canada.

I have a few "honorable mentions", but these are the most un-forgettable.

My most memorable sight - descending into Seattle at sunset - we were headed north and there was a heavy but low cloud cover. As we passed (what I think was) Mt. Hood, it was sticking up out of the clouds. We descended rather close to it (I thought) and dropped into the clouds...

1.Flying SCL-GRU-MAD, the sunrise I saw while flying over the Canary Islands was astonishing.

2.Flying southbound in Chile...where you can see the Pacific Ocean at your right and the Andes at your left

3.When I woke up for sunrise flying SCL-LIM-JFK and saw the whole East Coast of the US while the aroma of warm bread and just made coffee was invading the plane.

No question: the Grand Canyon, not just from a 30,000 ft. high jet flying over, but from a small Twin Otter on approach/departing GCN. It was magnificent!

However, I must say that anything out of an aircrafts window captivates me, even on a relatively boring trans-pacific flight over nothing but blue. Just crusing that high and smooth can keep my eyes glued to the window. And no, nothing's wrong with me...  Big grin

In no order whatever:

  • A foot and a half of my own right wing fluttering in the wind, then tearing away.

  • Concorde going past, opposite direction, below me, over Normandy.

  • Smoking volcanoes.

  • Mount Logan and St. Elias and the mountains range east of Yakutat.

  • A MiG-17, a quarter mile off my nose, looking me over.

  • Everything about visuals in and out of DCA.

  • Monaco, with the rubber from the GP still visible on the streets.

  • Turning aspen and dustings of fall snow all along the Rockies.

  • Looking UP at the cliffs of the Grand Canyon.

  • 2.75" rockets streaking off my wings.

  • Solid, unbroken lines of headlights on the interstate, all the way from LA to Vegas on a Friday night.

  • The little town where I grew up - from 35000 feet.

  • The Greenland icecap when the visibility is absolutely unlimited.

  • Absolutely nothing - and having survived that, I will never land a helicopter on loose snow again.

  • Herds of wild horses and of pronghorn antelope.

  • Denali.

  • Rivets on another plane.

  • The Wright memorial at Kittyhawk.

  • An airport - at the end of a three-hour emergency. Gorgeous!

  • Moonlight over the mouth of the Amazon.

  • Concorde and a Ford Tri-motor at the same time.

  • Okay, that's enough. Sorry 'bout the Concorde twice but it was an stunning sight any time, anywhere.

HNL-ITO, first flight of the day, AQ 732. When we took off from HNL sun was just coming up and as we passed over Maui, I could see the sun rising above Mt. Haleakala. Breathtaking. Then on approach into ITO, all of the waterfalls that had sprouted from the side of the mountains. Amazing. Two awesome sites on one flight. And to think, we weren't even flightseeing!

    1. Kai Tak IGS 13 at night in rain
    2. Parallel approach - coming into SFO on a NW 742 in 1995 - lined up for 28R and had a UA 752 about 800 feet off our port wing the whole way down - right in front of me.
    3. Rwy 22 approach at HND at dusk on a CLEAR day - Tokyo looked incredible
    4. Rwy 4 approach into LGA in '98 or '99 - the view of wintry Manhattan and Brooklyn was stunning
    5. Any time I've seen the Grand Canyon (at least four or five x)
