Your First Flight

Fri Feb 13, 2004 8:17 pm

Who remembers their very first flight?

Mine was with Ansett Australia in the mid 1990's. Since I had never been on a plane before this dad thought it would be a good birthday present.

souvenirs.....mine was Brussels - Tripoli - Libenge - Stanleyville (now Kisangani), something like 16hrs on SABENA DC-6B OO-CTB (I think), June 1954. A couple of hours after landing, my second flight was on a (bright yellow) Piper Cub and I could experience my first looping.
Not the kind of thing to forget, even half a century later...good old times.

Mine was in 1982 on a BA flight from LHR to YYZ. We had a hell of a start as the Cockpit had to slam the anchors on after we'd started rolling as a fire truck encroached the runway on his way to an emergency.

Mine was a domestic flight in Italy when I was 8, on my birthday, flying from Bergamo-Orio al Serio airport (BGY), 30 miles east of Milan, to Naples (NAP).
One hour non-stop flight on a Fokker F28 flown by Itavia (then a private domestic airline later defunct due to a major accident over Ustica island).

1968, on a Dan-Air D.H.Comet from VCE to LGW. I vividly remember the turbulence as we went over the Alps and being served Shepards Pie for lunch.

I was about 3 years old when I was flying the first time...

It was a holiday charter trip my parents did.

Innsbruck, Austria to Rhodes, Greece with an Austrian Airlines MD-83.

Considering I was a year old when I first took to the skies, I dont remember a thing.
But my parents tell me it was on Delta, and the route was SJU-ATL-LAX (to go to the 1984 olympics in Los Angeles). They dont even have a clue on the equipment.

1981-Montana Austria, (OE) 707, JFK-SZG-VIE and return VIE-SNN-JFK

This was truly a memorable experience for several reasons...

This was a unique charter airline based in Austria that had a plane seized by US Marshalls for smuggling weapons through Houston, TX in 1977. I think this flight was significant because of the routing, for example the first leg JFK to Salzburg as a scheduled routing-today there is very limited domestic service to SZG, and I don't think there has been anything transoceanic since.

Approx 4 weeks after arriving in VIE a very brief line in the news said they would cease ops immediately and they would have 2 last flights. My family and I got on the 2nd to last flight ever with this airline.

2 years later I took my second flight with a well-known airline Pan Am on a 747 JFK-ZRH-MUC, a sad irony occurred while on ground in ZRH. I was allowed to visit the cockpit and was telling flight crew about my experience with Montana Austria and how they went bankrupt-the Pan Am captain replied, "we will never go bankrupt".

My first flight was in June of 1987. It was on good old TWA from CLE-JFK, then JFK-SJU. I wish I remebered the aircraft types, I was not such an aviation enthusiast back then. Big grin

My first flight I was like a month old. We went EWR-MCO. The first flight I can fully remember was when I think I was 4. We went TPA-EWR, and we were on the Continental Airbus A300. I remember sitting with my parents, and we each got a hot pizza in a square tin. I remember it being very very good!

My first flt was on a virtually empty BEA Trident (can't remember series) LHR-DUB. I was only about 6 or 7. I remember thinking how amazing it was to be flying through and above the clouds. I couldn't take my eyes off the windows and couldn't wait for the next flt which happened to be a EI 737-100.

I had a major fear of flying before it after someone told me that takeoff and landing was similar to a roller-coater (I hated those!) But for a family vacation in 1991 we went from YYZ-TPA, and I continued to be nervous until the moment we taxiied onto the runway. From that moment on I've loved flying and everything to do with it!  Smile

My first flight was on a BA 742 HKG-LHR in Sept 1986. I was with my brother traveling as an unaccompanied minor. I was in 'C' while my brother was in 'Y'. I was 9 yrs old at the time and I cried as I was on my own after takeoff. The F/A managed to sit me with my brother back in 'Y'.

As a side not to my above posted first flight. I was traveling with a group to perform in the Paris new years day parade. I was so nervous if I could have gotten my money back out of the trip I would have. I am so glad that I didn't back out. I was so nervous getting onto that plane. We took off and a love affair was born. I have loved flying ever since. I still get nervous but I still love the sound of those engines the smell of the kerosene burning and the feel at take off.

Fly in my memories and my heart 727. Fly forever with me in my thoughts and dreams. Fly on 727 majestic little three holer fly on 727.

My first flight was Air Canada from KIN-YYZ on either a DC8 or 707 (I was travelling to YUL that day). I remember the aircraft seated six across (3+3). I was young (8 years old) and it was a long time ago. The only details I remember was my seat (6F) and when the aircraft began its initial descent into Toronto.

You could say mine was in 1979, when my mother was pregnant with me (she didn't know at the time.) They flew Dan-Air NCL-GRO. My actual first flight though was with BY NCL-GRO in 1989 on a 737. I was 9 years old. I remember standing in the viewing area at NCL around 10.30pm watching all the aircraft landing and taking off thinking how fantastic it was and my brother who is 2 years younger than me crying because he didn't like 'the big noises they make'. I couldn't get enough of it. As we were flying over Paris, the captain announced that we might be able to see the top of the Eiffel Tower and the light. About 20 minutes later, my auntie decided to say that she could see the light. What she was actually looking at was the light on the wing. Needless to say that was a standard joke every year when we went on holiday. As the aircraft was taxiing down NCL for departure, they opened the doors to let two latecomers on (don't get the chance to do that now) and didn't bother to fully pressurise the plane before take-off. A lot of people were bad on decent and had to give a baby oxygen, but everyone recovered fine.

Mine was in 1984 from TLV to CGN on El-Al 737-200. The thing I remember most was what seemed like a wicked climb, very steep. I don't know if this was because as a first impression on a child's mind the climb seemed steeper than it actually was or because the old 737's did have a slightly steeper angle of trajectory.
