The one to MCO maybe a Military Charter as well as the NW flight. Just a thought. Of course they could also be MX repos.

Northwest has a crew base at IAD, but it also connects to Air Mobility at BWI 52 miles to the north. So, the NW flight could be military, or it could be your garden variety politicos at the Nascar-Daytona to see and be seen.

The President is @ Daytona today, so it could be related to that visit...

I don't know if this fits the category, but back about 1990 or so, there was a British Airways Concorde and an Air France Concorde, both charters, scheduled to arrive within a few minutes of each other into MCO. The captains got together and timed their arrivals to be able to simultaneously touch down. The British Airways was on 18L and the Air France was on 18R. I have a photo, and will try to post it one of these days.

Simple answer fellas, NASCAR at Daytona.. that probably explains all the charters.

I know MCO isn't too far from DAB, but why wouldn't these flights simply fly into DAB if they are in fact charters for the Daytona 500? Daytona Beach's airport is literally right next door to the main event.

it would have nothing to do with Bush since he landed at DAB. MCO is over 60 miles away from DAB.

On another odd note, both IND ATA flights were L1011s and they are bringing in another L1011 tomorrow morning

No room perhaps? This weekend DAB is typically full, one of the runways is closed in order to park aircraft. Well, at least that's what my brother has advised was done in previous years.

So some flights may well have had to go to MCO, for simple lack of anywhere to put them at DAB. Also, for the airlines, there would be an advantage to flying to an airport they are already established at. Private charters that can't get into DAB would probably look next possibly at SFB, since that is closer to Daytona Beach.

HNL FB:

Let's see if we can start one. The HNL Rarities was a good thread.

I first lived in Orlando when all the commercial traffic flew into ORL. Those were the good old days, with DL DC-6s, DC-7s, Convairs, EA DC-6s, DC-7s, L-188s, Connies, National Convairs, Connies, Electras.

When a hurricane arose, you'd get a lot of traffic from the Bahamas, and south Florida. Cunard Eagle Viscounts, lots of south american stuff. I virtually lived around the airport. Knew the ticket counter guys on a first name basis.

When the jets came, they went to MCO. First Eastern with the DC-8, then Delta with the DC-8 and CV-880. Traffic at ORL petered off and within a year or so it was all at MCO. It was too far for me to travel frequently, so I had to watch from afar.

Lots of good military stuff at MCO in those days, too. B-47s, B-52s, KC-97s, KC-135s, F-89s, F94s.

Ah, yes. Orlando pre-Disney.

That would have been sweet to see all of those piston engine planes at ORL. I love sitting in that spotters park on the southwest corner of ORL and watching the planes land and take off there, although the largest plane I had seen recently there has just been a Gulfstream II. I could just picture those old piston planes thundering by if there was a park there back in those days.

My neighbor told me about growing up around the old McCoy Airforce Base. He lived off of Conway and McCoy Road. He was telling me how he used to go fishing in a nearby lake and the bombers would buzz over him.

He also told me about the B-52 crashing in his neighborhood and not being allowed to go back to his house.

Hlywdcatft,

Runway 7-25 at ORL was not there in the late 50's-early 60's. There was a runway 18-36 along the west edge of the field, as well as 4-22. these two runways met at a spot just north of the Joe Kittenger Park you mentioned.

18-36 was fairly short, so was used mostly by the smaller aircraft. The main runways were 13-31 and 4-22. 13-31 is still there, but 4-22 exists today only in portions of taxiways and aircraft parking. Portions of 18-36 are used as ramps by the FBOs and business hangars along the west edge of the airport.

I used to go to a spot at the fence at the approach end of 31. The planes were real low at this point and gave you a real close-up view.

I lived directly across Lake Underhill from the airport at that time, and could ride my bike to the terminal. I used to cut grass to pay for my flights. My most memorable flight was on a National Airlines Convair 440. I went to JAX and picked it up there, and made stops in Daytona Beach, Orlando, Lakeland, Tampa, St Pete, Sarasota, Ft Myers, West Palm Beach, Ft Lauderdale amd Miami. Stayed in Miami for a couple of hours and then made the return flight.
What a day! Also flew on Eastern and National L-188s out of ORL.
